I am looking for the best sources online (books/sites/videos) that teach the fundamentals of woodworking. I want to build some furniture pieces for my house within the next year or so, and would like to start learning now.

The work Matthias does is not practical for most people. Few people will invest several hours into making a device/jig/sled to cut a joint.

You will need dust collection if you are going to use machinery. Hand tools is the way to go no noise no dust.

you can do a lot with a drill, circular saw, clamps, sander, and other basic hand tools

If you need to slap together some particle board, sure. If you want to make something that will last learn how to make proper joints.
