I live with my dad and stay up late at night working in my computer room, which is across the hall from my dad's bedroom. He's kind of old so he wakes up easily. I was wondering if I could use eva foam or some foam kind of like in my picture to make improvised soundproofing panels so he can't hear me playing music and moving around at night. I don't play music loud, but at night there's no other noise and I think the hallway affects how loud it is.
I'm pretty sure I remember past threads about doing this type of thing.
Why is there not a sticky with this already?
To significantly reduce sound transmission you have to increase mass, or decouple surfaces.
Those foamy things only reduce something called RT60, how long it takes for sound to decay by 60 db. In other words it reduces echo.
Yes, plastering your walls with mattress foam will reduce sound levels outside the room, but not significantly. He's still going to hear you.

It actually depends. It won't significantly reduce sound transmission but sometimes it's actually second-, third-, etc. order reflections bouncing off the walls and down/across the hall that cause the most discomfort.
so although open cell foam doesn't improve direct transmission much, it still will make the room, hallway, and house *apparently* more quiet and in a lot of cases that's enough. in other words, the direct sound won't be accompanied by a thick series of fluttering reflections working their way around the room and down the hallway.
it's a good starting point at least, and might just werk

What people dont realise is that this stuff is primarily to reduce echos

Just smother the old man with it instead.

How about some headphones, OP?
>>1072584
Why not get him something to listen to whatever light music quietly without commercials that interrupt it, or a white noise generator.
Just running a small air filter in your own room or his would at least cover over movement or typing (unless you have a heavy clicking keyboard). And act like you come from a first world nation and listen to music without disturbing everyone else. Use wireless headphones if there are others in the house that don't want to hear it. Don't be like the people that drive around with shitty "music" blasting out of their car and vibrating their license plate to wake everyone up at night, or use stereos blaring outside their house or apartment.
So either whitenoise type thing, or rug/soft shoes plus headphones. Hell of a lot easier and cheaper than trying to sound proof a whole room plus the duct work.

Because then he wouldn't be able to hear his dad knock on the door while he faps to cartoons.

I thought of that just after I posted, but then I figured if he can't figure out how to lock the door, fuck him. No disrespect intended, OP.

i have found that foamboard made to go under siding on houses works far better than that crap in your op pic
