drill a hole to start it. Then you can probably use a bandsaw to enlarge the holes and get the right shape. I might use a file to start rounding off the edges and you could always use a sander to remove material as well. Not sure why you chose that particular object to recreate, but good luck!

um, yeah. There is more than one way to do things. The chisel idea is another option. Depends a lot on the kind of wood he's using. Some woods aren't great for chiseling.
