I'm looking for a small desk top toy or project to build. Something like a stirling engine or one of those walking strandbeast kits. Not interested in a model airplane or anything like that. Something mechanical or with an interesting movement. Any recommendations?

No, no recommendation.

Yeah, get a Stirling engine
What sort of tools do you have etc? Anything you can actually make a Stirling engine/strandbeast?
Otherwise buying a prefabricated "kit" is not diy, it's model building

Newton's Cradle would be pretty easy to build

I disagree. If we had a modeling board sure, but this is the only board where people who like working with their hands can gather outside of very specific subjects (Gundam models on /m)

There are plenty of hands working pages
All of the porn boards involve you working with your hands for instance

You can build a stirling engine without buying a kit - you probably have the materials at hand, just follow a youtube video.
If you want something in kit form - there is of course no shame in visiting a model shop.
