Hi /diy/ I finally bought myself a boat similar to the one above.

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

Hi /diy/
I finally bought myself a boat similar to the one above. It's an old Whaler, but modernized with features like internet, televisions, livingroom etc. Its about 44 meters long, and the engines are in top shape.

So, now I'm playing with the thought of making money with it.

My idea so far is to arrange some sort of expedition where each partisipant will pay x money for y distance traveled/diesel. Food/beer etc included in the price.

what do you think? any suggestions on how i should run things?

its a sea full of options!

First you need a name for you boat, all boats need good names and the one it came with probably sucked.

You should name it SHADILAY!

You just went out and bought a boat like that without first having a plan for what to do with it? Op, I hope to one day be able to throw money around as shamelessly as you do.

I like the idea. I'm still trying to save for my 17ft whaler. Good for you! What is your experience?
>>
>>1055905
it sounds like you just want to be an ocean taxi or mini cruise ship. You might be able to make some money providing your services to universities doing marine biology and oceanography shit. You might even be able to make some money as a mini cruise ship, but you would need to do a shit ton of remodeling and renovating to make it cozy and classy enough to compete with actual cruise ships.

But even if you do manage to make money, you still need to hire a crew, and pay for general maintenance and upkeep. I really don't imagine you breaking even.
>>
>hire a crew
>do mostly legal transporting of goods
>avoid alliance patrols
>take on passengers to fill the gaps

Hmm.. Well, I very nearly booked a surf cruise with a german bloke a few years back, there are few things in this world that middle aged surfers with throwaway budgets want more than to explore unspoiled coastlines in search of virgin oceanic orgasms. Kit it out with all the goods, jetski's, scuba gear, beer, beer, beer, you know, toys.

Otherwise, floating dockside restaurant maybe? The other anons idea of letting the marine biologists catch a ride to study stuffs, otherwise, join greenpeace and hunt wailers like those hippies on whale wars.

Or, make a floating homestead?

Do you know of what kind of building restrictions you'll face for renovating it? Maritime safety codes and all that jazz.
>>

So, you live in Denmark? Or in the Oslofjord? I actually just moved to Stockholm from the Netherlands. Good luck OP! Try to aim for people that can spend other peoples money on your boat, like scientists. That would probably be the best way. And slap on a windmill, just for shits n giggles!

I really like that idea OP and there is a market for it.

That being said, the cost for people would be expensive (think 10 grand for 2 weeks per person), you'd need multiple crew (a good cook is important as well as engineer).
You will also need to do a bunch of government testing depending where you are. I know in Canada you need to have several government certifications and to meet safety standards for such an endeavour (even getting certified to talk to the coast guard). You'll need people to measure your compass deviation yearly, and most importantly be Hella comfortable sailing.

Also as soon as you take payed passengers into international waters a while shit load of legal crap comes into play.

That being said OP. I wish you luck and I hope to one day even come aboard.

Providing services to universities doing marine biology and oceanography shit, is a great idea! But what do they require? And how do I get them to use my services?

I think you need a much clearer idea of who your target audience are. Expeditions where? Doing what? Are you offering cruises, or a place on a "working ship", or prime fishing opportunities, or what?

You also shouldn't openly charge by gallon diesel or whatever. Have a number of set-price options and keep the exact calculations to yourself. Making that kind of thing public knowledge is just inviting smartasses and cheapskates to criticise you.

Hydrogen Challenger is a 66 metre (216' 6") refitted coastal tanker for mobile hydrogen production, it is fitted with a vertical axis wind turbine that generates electricity for the electrolysis of water to fill the hydrogen storage tanks. The total storage and transportation capacity is 1,194 m3 (42,000 ft3), it is stationed in the German Bight or near Helgoland (where the most wind is) and docks in Bremerhaven where the produced hydrogen is delivered to the market.

The cost of maintenance will come close to how much you spend on diesel and that gap closes with the size of the ship.

Whats the ships hull like? Is it all steel? How many patches have been done so far? Do you have some people onboard already that can weld? You should reinforce some of the hull on old steel ships, the welds are normally pretty shit because the welding machines back then werent as good as they are now days so they didnt pen as deep into thicker steel bits.

Surf cruises are actually pretty basic. An experienced surfer will know where to look for waves, provided they have accurate maps of the coastline they'll be searching.
Basically, any stretch of coast you can legally access, that's exposed to regular storm swells, will yield waves to surf. I suggest having a motorized dingy to get in and out of tight spots along the coast, good waves are often hidden in shallower waters. Also, the more wild the coastline, more rewarding it is for the surfer to surf there. Every surfer is greedy and secretive, we love the feeling of surfing secret waves.

One of the core themes of surfing is to search for new waves. Hell, big name brands like ripcurl have used it as their slogan, "live the search" and such, so I'm quite sure there is a market for that sort of thing. The pro's especially, cause they can afford it.

Otherwise, all you really need is stuff to keep the crew alive, and busy. A good cook will also serve you very well, as >>1056270 has said. Food smells 10x godlier at sea, and nothing works up hunger like a long surf session.

A lot of good advice in this thread. I like this thread.

Depending on how much cabin/crew rest space you have you could rent out or sell room aboard and conduct sea voyages or expeditions on it. You could also exchange a free trip in return for crew positions, such as a cook or maintenance.

Seeing how you're located in Norway I could definitely see people paying to take sea trips from Oslo to Hammerfest and back. I would say to go all the way to Svalbard or Greenland but I doubt your ship has ice breaking functionalities.

Edgy "HUNT PIRATES" suggestions aside, there's probably lots of stuff you could do

>tow sonars for oceanography or whatever
>just give normal-ass cruises
>standard large-scale fishing (you'll likely need a license though)
>independent ferry
>do deliveries and become literally a shipper via ship

Especially giving cruises -- I've heard of a guy in my town who won a minor prize on the lottery but was already middle class, so he simply bought a boat. He runs game jams out of it. The idea is that you pay a hundred or two bucks for what is essentially a cruise, but the ship has a WIFI network and satellite internet connection, and lots of hard lines and extra power, so you can bring your laptop (or whole workstation) and work on a vidya gaem over the course of the cruise.

This sort of have been suggested before, but it is still just as brilliant. And thanks for the new info.

What about a surf cruise ship, with and (optional) philosophy to include the surfers in the process of finding places to surf. Maybe with a main harbor down in the Caribbean somewhere. And when we know our way around the islands, we can offer a wider range of activities and sell to a even bigger audience, which can include diving, waterscooters etc. and maybe even treasure hunting. We already got one diver and one waterscooter expert. A good cook is definitely a must.

Make some sort of end of the world ship you can use to travel the seas.

Idiot.

Ships are generally renamed whenever they change owners.
>>
>>1060945
Looking for wrecks in the baltic is hard. Harder than in other places. The archipelago is the world's biggest with quite an amount of islands and lots of rocks!

Basically you need to work it out approximately where a ship has sunk before you go looking for it, and you need smaller boats because your has too big of a draft.
Side scan sonars help, they are expensive but the resolution is good in shallow water, shit in deeper, and baltic deep is like 40m.
Last summer we tried to find a sediment catcher that the university lost in the sea due to fuck ups, it's something like 30cm in diameter and sticks maybe 50cm from the bottom. Found nothing with a hummingbird side scan sonar....
Tried the resolution with a dummy made out of wood and didn't see that on the sonar either even though it had a buoy and we were circling around it.

Side scan sonars also cover only around 100m on both sides and it's dubious if the resolution is usable in the extreme end. And you need to drive at something like 2-4 knots... Calculate from there how big of an area you can cover in a day :)
>>
>>1060945
Oh, and yes, there is stuff to find. Most of the wrecks are still there, somewhere, in unknown places.
I work as a diver and I know people who find wrecks on a regular basis as they do lots on environmental surveys and always dive at new dive sites.
>>
>>1061408
40 m is literally nothing... That's shallow enough that you need to think of how squat effect is gonna fuck up your plans.
>>
>>1055905
Do you have an ice classification for your ship?
>>
>>1061408

>and baltic deep is like 40m.

Are you implying that is deep? Because that is shallow. It is within recreational diving limits.

Hell I am looking at a site to start an operation with a depth no deeper than 45 meters because then we can have any PADI pleb inspect the structures.

If maritime law allows i guess u really could just make a bunch of meth and sell to deallers that wanna take the risk. Bobing around shitposting about our adventure sounds way better. Bonus, fewer meth heads.
>>
I don't know why, but it seems like everybody thinks "maritime law" is some sort of carte blanche to grow weed, produce meth, fuck babies, kill people and in general bypass all codes of ethics and legality, by virtue of being in "no mans land".

It is not.

Maritime law is a complex branch of law, due to many factors. It's hard bordering on impossible to get a full overview, but in general, its very economics-focused, such as who is responsible in case of damage, who is responsible for marking and labeling goods etc.

Pirates of the Caribbean has people thinking that you can do anything that you want at sea.

My friend has a large landing craft that is in such a terrible state that when he last sent it to Trinidad they impounded it for a while, sent it back, with the coast guard following it to Grenada and then the Grenadian coast guard following it up to make sure they fucked off. Then sent out an advisory to all the other maritime authorities in the region and the vessel is now officially barred from leaving the country. No country in the west indies will accept it and the association has barred it from leaving the waters of SVG. SVG cannot allow it to leave even if they wanted to without breaching agreements with other countries and organizations. This is a region where drink driving is normal, guys walk around with cutlasses and vehicle inspections are based off of 1943 English law. Vessels need no tags unless commercially operated. You don't need a license or certificate to operate any vessel unless it is commercial. AND the maritime associations clamped down on THIS ship.

Examples on it's state

- the drop gate's winch is dead so for 3 years a 20 ton excavator acted as a stationary winch

- the crew chose to sleep on deck instead of the crews quarters, even in rain, because they were so bad.

- the only things, literally things, that worked on the bridge were the helm and throttle and those didn't work right nor did the work all the time

- engines were shot to the point where a slight headwind would stop her in her wake

- bilge running 25% of the time

Thought padi was 12m
>>
>>1062162

18m recommended limit is for bare basic beginners which are "open water".

Advanced open water is 30m and a deep dive cert gets you to 40m. 40m is the total "recreational limit" and is as easy to get as an american driving license. I have friends who are really terrible at everything so they fell back on PADI professional as a last ditch effort to get a job.

PADI is really about handing out as many certs as possible for the sake of business so as a PADI diver you really can't call yourself skilled.

Should've pointed out that i was the anon who suggested both instances of surf cruises, my bad lad.

Having the surfer be the one to select the area to explore is pretty important, cause they (should) have the know how on the geography.
As far as making packages easier and more enticing, I'd say offer an area to venture into (say, west coast canada, or west coast central america etc.), and include all the aside activities mentioned everywhere else, like scuba, fishing, wreck/treasure diving, offer scuba courses, sailing lessons with a hoby cat, whatever sea based activities really.

I think versatility is the name of the game in your case. Have her set up to accommodate anything from a rich prick looking for a seaborn escape with his trophy wife, to a group of bachelors looking to piss it up, to a family, or a team of researchers.

You might just end up living the dream OP, I'm pretty jelly

Yes, that's why I called it "baltic deep".
And a 5000€ side scan sonar can't take even that, imagine when it's truly deep!

Anyway, the baltic's shallowness is the peril of it. Pic related. We drive there in the nighttime at the speed of 30 knots in pitch black using just a radar. But only on routes that have been driven before as it can otherwise be scary...

Not deep. Baltic deep. I am a scuba instructor (PADI and CMAS) and I have the national "professional diver"-certification which has no connection to the recreational side. I live in the bottom of the baltic during summers :)
>>
>>1062295

>maybe the baltic isnt ideal for treasure hunting

I feel the opposite. If it is difficult to prevent most salt normies to attempt it means there are more pickings for you.

Just need a good navigator to keep you off the rocks and lower thr smaller craft in the water to do your surveys. With equipment actually suited to the job.

We had some guys by from england doing a survey of west coast of SVG and they were able to take imagery couple hundred meters deep. Which is good because if you go 2 miles offshore you are looking at over 200m in areas

The baltic doesn't have Teredo navalis so it's a treasure chest for those interested in wooden wrecks. Also it has a long history of active trade which is the reason for the abundance of wrecks.
I can easily navigate in the Archipelago sea but to find the wrecks you need to first find out where to search.
Try badewanne.fi for some info of wreck searching crews.

And of course you find shit hundreds of meters deep if you have the gear but the hummingbird side scan sonars I have used cost 5000€ and they have crappy resolution so imagine what better gear costs!
If you have a trip to the US buy your sonars from there because they are a third of the price. The only shit things are that you are restricted to silly units like fathoms and feet and the time zone can't be chosen correctly. We have solved it by having it at 12h wrong, then it looks good even if it isn't :)

Basically turn it into the Belafonte from the Life Aquatic. Hire people that look like the crew from the movie.

Have fake people in a boat "attack" the ship. Play the stooges over loud speaker and have a gun with blanks fire at the pirates.

Take people on a rescue mission to save their buddy from the pirates.

Have parties and show wes anderson movies.

Charge thousands for life aquatic themed vacations.

NO, YOU CANNOT MAKE THIS COUNTRY UP.

what you want is Liberia, or some similar DGAF Land's Ship Registry.. and if you are wondering why everyone doesn't do that? the majority of commercial ship operators actually do, see:

AYY, HOL UP
- so you be tellein me Pirate, you be from the shores of one of the 14 countries currently on the naughty step [Pic related] ? - even then, you are not 'barred' - you just get extra carefully frisked under the armpits, and are more liable to stress, hassle and delay, etc.

That is my understanding anyway - you certainly can't blanket-ban Liberia + Panama registered ships from commercial ports, for no particular reason - youd be closed to about a third of commercial shipping then. IDK, I haven't actually registered mayn ships desu - but thats the way ah see it. And you can also detain more or less any ship for unseaworthiness etc., regardless of flag, or have them barred from other ports in the area, etc. Basically, a harbor/port is not a lawless void, regardless where you claim to come from.

Saint Vincent. We are black listed in a lot of shit more than just shipping and vessels.

I have never been to paris or sent a ship to paris so maybe my understanding of blacklisting is not correct.

I have seen a vincentian flag wearing chinese freighter in hamburg a month ago.

The pirates that exist here are business pirates. We only have a couple of yatch boardings a year so we are pretty safe in terms of sea violence.
