Seriously, Direstas videos are pretty well produced and interesting. Is there an alternative way to do the things he does? Sure. Is there a better way? Yeah probably. Does he say that any of his methods are definitive? No. In fact, all he does is video himself making something without commentary or discussion. In the end, if it looks the way he wants it to he was successful. Nothing.

Technically, the wood dust can be a nuisance since it tends to soak up the oil protecting the bearing surfaces from rust. Generally, machine shops don't share space with woodshops, because the dust in the air getting all over your precision equipment is a pain.

But all this really amounts to is some extra cleanup. There's no inherent problem with it.

The main problem is that metal lathes are designed to run slower, however woodturning usually requires much higher rpm, and so by speeding up the lathe, the torque ratio is decreased, and since the log is so huge, theres added counter torque against the motor, which is why the piece kept stopping when he was turning it, you can burn the motor out (or just a fuse)

when you do a commissioned job, you do it to their specs, not yours
It's normal to plane sideways when flattening a tabletop, you'll end up with grooves otherwise
