What is the contractor's equivalent of "spitting in your food?"

Using/doing one or more of the following:

OSB/Plywood/MDF
Drywall
Asphalt Shingles
Face nailing slate
Breaking old slate so it can't be salvaged
Twist-on wire connectors
Cellotex
Vapor barriers
Aluminum roofing nails
Softwood studs
"Structural" foam insulation under concrete floor

The list goes on. Basically, everything you can possible do to lower the life of the structure to ensure job security.

Shitting in your house.

Feathers in chimney/vents.
They stop air circulation and are impossible to remove by throwing down metal ball (or whatever it's called, the one for cleaning chimneys).

I was part of a firm that was doing a sizeable job in London, the client was a cunty woman who thought she knew better than we did and was rude as fuck to us, so we just did everything she said exactly as she asked us to do it, even when we knew it was wrong, nothing outright dangerous you understand but not as good as it could be if you know what you are doing, we got it all in writing which she thought was protecting her but we let her hang herself with her own paperwork, when it came time for building inspections all the little birds came home to roost, lots of remedial work needed and nothing she could do because she was the one who ordered it, it ended up costing her £20,000 ($30,000) extra and another month of work to put right.

Doors in the wrong place with no planning permission for the door in the first place, she wanted cheaper lower grade wire, didn't want the soak away as big as it needed to be, fire alarms were not fitted or not fitted right because she didn't want to pay for the right system for the property and the use she was going to use it for, no fire exit signage, flooring was cheap shit that would only last a year or two before being junk, there were just so many it's hard to list all of them and since I did mostly ground work (footings and foundations) most of it is what I heard from other guys who were still working on it, but she got a real fright I know that much.

>>1042071
She had her nose in all of it right from day one, she even tried to get us to use an inferior grade of concrete for the foundations, and she pissed and moaned about the cost of the rebar too!, I was glad to get out of there early in the job.

There is an art to this. I've seen it all. More than just shitting in the walls (drywallers). Seen it duct work, under insulation, in aluminum soffit, under concrete. If you are ever new man on a crew never, ever oblige the foreman when he says "I need a bucket! Quick go get that one over there in the trees".
>>
>>1042065
Very rarely people use aluminum roofing. You're lucky to get aluminum flashing. Two different metals cause galvanic corrosion. Using them with slate is utter shit. Using asphalt shingles is also shit.

>>1042045
I've never hired a contractor. I do all my own work.

Twist-on wire connectors are standard here in the U.S. and as long as the person using them is competent and not using the cheapest wire nut possible you will never have a problem. I've opened joints that were twisted together with porcelain wire nuts that were still good. Always twist the wires together before putting the nut on though. Drywall isn't that bad-pros and cons to it compared to other methods.
>>
>>1041941
most of the shit on this list is standard
>>
>>1042225
>Always twist the wires together before putting the nut on though
I've always heard that you leave the wires straight and let the nut do the twisting as you apply it. Is that a stranded vs solid core thing or what?

>>1041941
So i'm looking into slating a roof in the future. Arent you supposed to tap two holes in the back then hammer through the face?

Only offer one way to complete the job. Advise them I will only work for premium time for this job because it's so shit.

Just leave and tell them to clean up their shit if the cat/dog/human piss/shit is too bad, just leave. I feel bad for the guy hanging out and working with the smoker, but fuck them, man. I don't need to put up with hoarders and shit. Tie a phone jack down and throw it inside on top of the pile, there's your PUC mandate.
>>
>>1042265
This, you bury it eight inches down exactly where you know in a couple of years they'll want to plant a flower border.

We had one job where we planted Japanese knotweed in a few hidden places in the back yard, that stuff is so invasive it's driven people to suicide trying to get rid of it.

There was an existing 3ft deep raised bed with lumber surround. Dug it out and planted everything from 4m3 busted up slate floor tiling, rolls of sisalation, tile ground leftovers, roofing iron, hell a magnet would stick to the bloody wood. Compressed down and reburied. Extra dirt went out front. Owner had demanded that we dispose of waste on our dime and time, but wanted us to pick up some dirt for his front garden. He then proceeded to fuck off on a hot date (daytime) woth fuck buddy from trailerpark.

Ps: he was v happy with the front garden. Prob get a call when he digs the back one for planting ahahaha
>>
>>1042265
if you are really lucky, you'll have the trashpit for 5-10 houses from your subdivision in your backyard. right where you wanted to build your shed.

even more of a 'spit' is to add any kind of environmental cleanup. bury all the empty hydraulic oil barrels you can - when they go to put in some additional parking at that business 10 years down the road and have to do a phase 1/2 site remediation.
>>
My most amusing one was burying a bunch of "services below" tape under a few inches, then the other mob the turf over....
>>
>>1042242

You can use two roofing nails, (copper or stainless nails or else theres no point in having slate) Or use metal "hooks" that go under the slate and wrap up around the bottom of the tile to hold it down. The hook method is how you patch in broken slates too since you cant get to the nails on a finished roof, but I've seen new roofs use all hooks as well.

how many north koreans do you know where you have this stereotype about them?
>>
>>1042580
Nope. Section 110.14 of the 2014 edition of the NEC (page 38)

It reads like a legal book, so you have to carefully examine the way they word things. 'Shall' and 'may' are two fine example. One is mandatory, one is not. In 110.14 (B) it says "Conductors shall be spliced or joined with splicing devices identified for the use OR by brazing, welding, or soldering with a fusible metal or alloy. "OR" is the keyword. It further goes on to specify if you were to solder the wires they must be mechanically secure before hand-so the electrical connection does not depend on the solder. No one solders their connections anymore. Most knob and tube is pulled out instead of being added onto, and new circuits are generally added in those situations anyhow. K&T are about the only times I can think of when soldering would even come up as a possible method of connection.

Some shit bag real estate fucko owed me $XXX for work, and wouldn't pay. So I got creative.

1. I tossed a dead skunk on his roof one night up near a place where you couldn't see it. Smelled up his nice yard for weeks in the summer until crows pecking at it dropped part of the carcass on his deck.

I deemed this wasn't bad enough, so:

2. Ordered 3 containers of "J-Lube" and mixed up one of them up in a 10 liter plastic jug and dumped it down his uphill driveway one evening. This worked better than intended as he came DOWN the driveway the next day, and crashed through the fence and onto his lawn. He was drinking that day and slightly under the limit so his insurance company refused to pay.

Sotry Tiem?

I was working as a technician on a freelance basis for a certain institution. The supervisor (and most of the regular staff) were terrible at communication and had zero regard or respeck for the us techs - even though we did 90% of the work.

I was one of their best techs, they disliked me less than most of the others so they always offered me max hours on a weekly basis. I worked there for a year as their star tech, did most of the training for them, etc. I was still being paid poorly, they were totally taking advantage of me having me do as much of their jobs as they could get away with. The communication and social skills of my supervisor were terrible - techs would come-in at 8am to work and she would stop them in their tracks "you don't have any hours today - if you DIDN'T get an email from me finalizing your shift YOU DON'T have a shift". She was always fucking around with everyone and being totally poor at communication and everyone would get thrown under the bus - including me at times.

Whelp, after kicking ass for them for the year they offered me a full-time position. They said I wouldn't get a raise just yet, for the new year, because when my full-time position starts I'll be getting a sizeable raise. Just after the Christmas break I get an email from her saying "hi Anon, the situation has changed and we can no longer offer you that full-time position but you can still work your normal tech shifts with us if you like - let me know if you're available".

Without any explanation I got pulled off the promotion AND they got away with not giving me the normal raise I otherwise had earned. I wrote back saying "Yes I can still do my normal shifts. See you then!".

Whelp, she never sent an email finalizing/confirming my shift. :^) So I said fuck it, I'm not showing up. The week came and I get a call from her at 8am wondering where the fuck I am. The whole department fell on its ass and 3 people ened-up getting fired :^)

>the building we work in is older than some countries so te AC is a retrofit and shitty
>need desk fans in summer to stay cool, my fan is one I inherited when I arrived at the company and it broke
>go to hambeast and ask for new fan
>she gives me a fucking lecture about being careful with company property and then tells me they don't have any so I'll have to buy my own or wait for a new order to to arrive
>ask her if she has ordered any for the next delivery and she says no, she is enjoying this
>asked her if she will order one for me then, she says she will "look into it" (no fuck off)
>couple of days later I'm on another floor and a new member of staff (a girl) has a brand new fan, so I asked he where she got it
>she told me that she got it from the hambeast on a promise to keep it quiet or everyone will want a new fan, even if they don't need one!?!!
>THIS IS WAR!!
>spend the next two months videoing the hambeast as she arrives for work because she is always 20 - 45 minutes late
>I also find her times sheets and note what time she puts down she arrived
>spend a whole weekend editing the video, with three sets of figures on the bottom
>what time she arrived, what time she claimed to arrive and how much the company paid her for work she did not do
>every time the figures change I added a "Ding!" noise
>then I Emailed the video to the top five managers from an anonymous Email account
>by a week later she was gone and I found six new fans sitting in the stock room with an invoice that gave a delivery time of over six months ago!

Shaves off a little but of your legs on your cabinet so it wobbles just a small amount so he came blame the floor

Change the labels on your boxes

Assemble your beds poorly (leave out a couple of screws, wipe his sweaty forehead on your mattress)

Hides slightly important boxes like something labeled bedside cabinet he will put in the attic

Charge you extra travel time, heavy lift fee, stair fee.

Or if you're a real jerk he would just dump your shit on the side of the road and tell you to get someone else to move it.

aka a fucking compressor running without oil - this does not 'make your friddge warm over time' - it fucks it, DED.

should always leave them 24 hours after transport if possible, and transport upright. Deliberately turning them upside-down by transport, then watching someone plug them in? - not 'a small jest', its criminal damage.

Doing a major bank gut and rebuild back in the 80's, I was a welders mate on this job in Threadneedle Street London, it was one of my first jobs after leaving school, the foreman on the job was a towering asshole of a man, and he made the mistake of pissing my boss off, one day my boss hands me two rusty old cylinders he dug up on the site and told me to throw them in the freshly poured concrete for the vault, I did as he said and thought no more of it, couple of weeks later he told me what those cylinders were, they were fire bombs from WW2, he dug up, and because it was a friday and the disruption meant we might not have got paid in time for the weekend he had me throw them in the concrete to ensure that didn't happen and to get back at the foreman, I pretty much started looking for a new job that same day.

When I was like 15 a housing development started being built in my friend's woods behind his family orchard, and we were all upset about losing our woods. So one night after the workers had built the frame to pour a foundation we threw like 6 sacks of rotten apples down into the corner. From everything we could tell they poured the concrete the next morning and the entire corner of the foundation was actually a sack of rotten apples

Working on a build and neighbours would complain about the noise all the time. Local Authorities came round, spoke to them, spoke to me. Guy was nice and said they would just have to put up with it.
Next day, powder cable down and smug grin from neighbour. Lost 3 days on site.
Put up obvious cctv, went to the room next to their bedroom and set up a hammer drill onto some timber. That drill went for 8 hours a day for the rest of the build.

This didn't happen. No one, not even the drunkest, craziest, wife-beatingest contractor would take the chance of burning down someone's home because of delayed payment. Working on a ground floor flat in Kensington, have to keep mess to a minimum, can't start any noisy work until after 08:00 and it has to stop by 16:00, can't have a skip/dumpster in the road overnight so we have to use a small tipper truck for all the waste.
We were pre-warned by the owner that the resident of the flat above was a cunt who was sour because she had been outbid by the owner of the flat we were working on, she showed up on the second day to complain about the noise and we showed her the agreement we had with the local authority about what hours we could work, she didn't like it because she couldn't do anything about it, every day she would call the council or come and pester us about something, so I finally got fucked of with this and put an old transformer we had in there, it was old and faulty, it would blackout all digital signals in a ten metre radius, so for the next five moths we worked there nobody had a reliable mobile phone or wifi signal.

I worked with forestry/arborist/landscaping contractor for 3 years. Most people where nice to us and if they were cunts we would usually just laugh at them behind their backs.
Unless they messed with our safety or money.

One time we were cutting down some trees beside a road. Not much traffic, but enough that we blocked the road every time we took down a tree, in case it fell on the road. And then this old asshole comes driving(always old people) and decided that a warning sign in the middle of the road and a guy signalling him to stop is propably nothing.

The foreman saw him pass the block and took a log and threw it on the road so the old guy would stop. And the tree we were cutting landed on the road (the apprentice fucked up, but he needs to learn too) in front of the old guys car. And then he started yelling that he could have been killed. The foreman then told us to take 5 minutes break. I've never seen a guy that angry in real life.
>>
>>1047368
Another time we had cleared out a lot of trees on an old farm, the deal was that we cut the trees down and took them away. Then the guy refused to pay. So me and another guy was told to take the tree branches (most of the wood was already firewood by now) and a woodchipper and throw all the chips down in front of his door. So we did and my boss sent him a bill for the woodchips. Last I heard, the guy hasn't paid up yet.

Whenever I'm on-site and we run a meeting for a client the first thing I do is talk to the AV people, introduce myself and make sure the communication lines are open so we can run a good meeting together. My state allows (legally) up to 50% of construction, just new house job-sites, debris to be buried on the property without notification of the future homeowner, must be 12" below final grade
My property has none, thankfully, neighbor across the street front and rear yard are filled with pressure treated wood, nothing will grow, she tried to sue, state ruled the slab counted as part of the property, so the front and back yard were the 50% allowed
Had a street, sidewalk and outer wall section collapse, the developer has buried all the straw bales used to channel runoff in the same place, after 10 years it rotted away and surprise, the bales were also under the final 2 home built's foundation, both home shifted and were red tagged, the builder's LLC had filed for Chapter 7 and they had created a new LLC that could not be sued by our HOA
Sold my house before the local news did some "Sad Face" stories, that was the best part of being on the HOA board, I found out and told my wife, she was the homes "legal" owner, we sold, it was, at the time a highly desired gated community, had an offer 3 days after making it available, new owner tried to sue, but since I was not the owner and she was not on the board, the suit fizzled, most owners in the community lost almost the value of their homes

Community in California, up and coming coastal city, thousand oaks.

Developer only put rebar on one driveway. They got it setup and looking good, called the inspector who okayed it. Then picked up the rebar and set it in the next houses driveway. And poured the first. Next day, inspector checks off the next driveway...

Same shit happened with the llc disappearing before anyone noticed everyones driveway was fucked.

I worked construction trades for a long time. About 20% of the people I worked with were great, the kind of person you could call at 3 in the morning when you got stuck in a ditch. 50% of them were just the for the money, did what they were told to do and did a fair job. 30% of them were never pleased. You were always too slow, not good enough, getting shit on constantly. Always pissy, never happy. I got a 4-5 day job done in 2 days because they boss gave me extra help. We did a great job and knocked it out of the park. As our reward we got our asses chewed because "now we don't have anything for you to do the rest of the week" and the next 3 days I sat at home and didn't get paid. >Pajeet gets fault call to go fix it
>Does that exact same fibre run
>Doesn't even pull the old one out
>Pajeet leaves and customer goes under floor to check if it's ok
>Snags fibre and breaks it

They finally sent someone competent to fix it, this shit is so common in telco it's fucking crazy.

Freak accident I swear, I was playing swingball with my brother when we were kids, the next door neighbour was a complete cunt, in fact the whole family were assholes of the highest degree including their daughter who was a year older than me and had her boyfriend beat me up at high school, like I said I was playing swing ball with my little bro and he smashed the ball with the force of a thousand suns, the string broke and the ball went up in the air and went straight down the vent pipe, it was like the perfect shot that you could never do on purpose in a million years, soon after the assholes next door started having big troubles with their toilet, it cost them a small fortune to find the problem and they somehow never put 2 and 2 together to work out it was us, even though the ball still had some string on it and the swingball pole was still in the garden awaiting repair or trashing!

Sometimes. More often in newer construction, but our construction from the 60s to the late 80s was scandalous. And they're a cheap part, no reason not to go stick one on your house if you don't have them.

No insulation, single glaze windows, no grounded outlets until the mid 70s.
>>
>>1056846
You think burger construction industry is bad?

Here is new Zealand neither double glazing nor insulation was mandatory until around 2005 I believe. You could have a 10 year old house with no insulation or double glazing.

In fact having a form of heating is still not mandatory. We are wiring a house up the local port hills, 2 million dollars including land probably, no heating.

I talked to them about it and they were like 'nah it'll be fine we have big windows to let the sun in'

Fucking retards in this country do not grasp the concept that when you want to be warm there will be no sun outside to heat up your fucking house and that Xbox huge windows, even if double glazed still let it out so fucking fast.

It's pretty common here in a new 3-4 bedroom house to have upward of 7 sets of triple stack sliding doors let alone all the huge windows, all heated by the fucking cheapest heat pump that they could buy at one end of the house. It's madness.
>>
>>1056753
Our place had a sort of wire ball looking thing in the top of the vent to stop shit/animals getting down there but other than that not much else, the cunts next door had nothing at all, just a pipe sticking up in the air, but their house was way older than our extended ranch style house from the 50's - 60's
>>
This one goes back to before the internet so that should give you an idea of how long ago this was, we had just finished work on a new 4 car garage for this fuck and were awaiting the final payment, he was delaying it and claiming there were all these problems with the work we did, this was complete BS and he was just being a stingy fucking jew-bag, we went back a bunch of times and finally the boss said enough pay us or we go the legal route, finally he paid up but it seems the boss was fucking mad about it still so he began to fill in every form for samples and junk mail he could lay his hands on in the name and address of the guy we had the trouble with soon we were all doing it, the guy was getting phone calls at all hours and junk mail by the bag full every day, we heard later that it gave him a nervous breakdown in the end.
>>
>>1041931
From experience I've found that my guys and I just do a cut-rate job to people who are dickheads to us.

Framing done without making sure everything is plumb or measured right or just with cheap, poor quality materials.
Drywall done but a shit job on the mudding and taping.
Plumbing and Electrical you need to do right because of code but that doesnt mean there arent ways to fuck with people.
Electricians might put in less plugs than agreed upon or put everything in upside down (which is an easy fix but still works as a subtle 'Fuck you' to the homeowner).
Plumbing you can set it up in a way that you know they'll get clogs all the time by making the rise lower than normal. Gotta be careful with that one though.
Most other shitty jobs are pretty self-explanatory and have people doing the bare minimum to get paid.
Alternatively, if the contract allows for some wiggle room on the contractors part or any of the subcontractors, they can just create or make up problems that will cost the person more to complete the project.
>>
>>1045042
If you don't have to, why the hell would you?
Paying for something on the principle that someone else might be bitter that you got it for free is the most nonsensical logic i've ever heard.
I recently finished resurfacing my garage using recycled packing skids and all I paid for was gas, woodstain, and varnish.
I've reclaimed so much cool shit from people that thought it was garbage. I reclaimed an old 12" x 12" x 40' support beam from an old barn and used it as a cross piece in my house. Stained glass and frames to suit that just needed new solder. Barn planks that I planed, stained, and made into a new hardwood floor. Even picked up an old style cast iron spiral staircase, refinished it, and made 5 grand off of it. And whats better is that I got paid to take all those things away.
>>
>>1057156
My neighbour is renovating his old ass house and he is a fucking retard.

I come home one day and find he has ripped out all his wood paneling walls and picture rails to start putting up plasterboard. There was an entire skip full of fucking rimu panels and shit.

I said I would take it away from free and the moron was over the moon.

>Tfw I got free rimu panelling and picture rails all down my hall and living room for fucking free, just my labour to sort it out and refinish it.

I just posted this on another thread but I thought some of you guys would also enjoy it here too, it's not really a contractor story but it sure did need one to come and fix it.

My father in law was a landlord and also a complete cunt to be around, just a sour mean asshole of a guy, he had a couple of properties and he decided to move a guy who had lived at one property out for no other reason than he didn't like that he had put an Obama sign on his lawn during the last election, the guy cleared out his shit a week before he had to and then glued all the windows and doors shut with construction adhesive, which had a week to set rock hard before the father in law went to look at the place, I almost died when I heard the story, trying to keep a straight face was nearly the death of me!
>>
>>1057146
>Plumbing and Electrical you need to do right because of code but that doesnt mean there arent ways to fuck with people.

I'm not an electrician but my buddy is and I showed this thread he said that all he has to do is not "go the extra mile" and put shit right so that in future there won't be problems, you can fit the electrics completely to code that will pass inspection but will still be a pain for the homeowner down the line. you don't need to do anything other than the bare minimum job, we've all worked with that man or woman (I've found this seems to apply more with women in my experience) who do just enough to keep their job but not one thing more, they make everyone's life hard but you can't fire them because they haven't technically done anything wrong, well imagine if a tradesman does that, would you want to live in a house built like that?

Don't be a fucking idiot, whoever they contract will foot the bill. It doesn't matter who did it, as long as someone was responsible for the installation and safe operation of whatever gets fucked there is someone to sue, the tradie who fucked it up will probably get away scot-free if their employer doesn't go bankrupt that is.

If they signed a liability waiver though, that's another thing.

>>
Irrigation tech, when one homeowner is being impossible and we've been to the house way too many times because of negligence we force the homeowner to sign a document stating that everything was fixed and is in perfect working order, will void the warranty the company puts on our systems and lets them know any call after that will result in a service fee. That or black ball them from any of the other local companies that do similar work. Usually means they have to call a shady guy in a truck if anything ever happens.

Fucking up your own trade because a customer hurts your feelings is the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

This sounds pretty small time compared to some of the stories in this thread, but if we work in a house and the customer makes themselves a cup of tea without offering us one, then the water gets turned off for the duration of the time we are working there with no warning.
