I'm thinking of making floating shelves out of 1x6 for blu rays. Instead of using L brackets I was thinking of just drill through them and running screws into the studs. Is there a reason why this wouldn't work?

Should work, but I would use multiple shelves to minimize the risk of something snapping. Also pre-drill
>>
easy to mess up the holes and not get them straight, also you'd likely need more screws than you would with l brackets since the stress on them would be different and while I'm not an engineer every way I picture what your describing seems to distribute the load on the screw in a much worse way than it would on an L bracket...

also you run the risk of splitting the boards...

maybe test one if your determined to do this? try it with your worst case heavy Blue ray collection... if it holds up all your BBW porn then your probably okay, but really an L bracket is the way to go

>but really an L bracket is the way to go
I concur

it doesn't have to be that big, find a really slim one or make one yourself....paint it the same color as the wall and you won't even notice it

The shelves would start tipping downward after a while. A screw alone doesn't provide the support necessary.
>>
Would a small L bracket work then? Thinking like the 1 inch ones?

Would something like this be enough?

Ok /diy/ seems like the smaller brackets would not be enough but what about these one the ends? then the smaller metal brackets in the middle just to prevent sagging? This would be on a 1x6 pine board. Would that hold?

We are talking about blurays here which are like 5oz and my math says about 160 per 8 foot shelf. That's 80lbs by my math. These brackets are rated for 100lbs plus id add the smaller metal brackets on the studs along the length of the board.

go for it

but you might consider 1x8s as it would give more room
>>
>>1033669
1x6 are 5.5 inches wide, same depth as a standard bluray. It's why i'm so keen on using 1x6 lumber for this project
>>
Also before I jump in does anyone else have any recommendations for shelving designs? I'm trying to go for a rustic craftsman look. For example i'm planning to build a black pipe desk with an oak top (will stain the shelving to match). Plan to even make my AV rack out of the black pipe hardwood style

Yea, I used 3/4 x 6

Might be a bit utilitarian for what you want, but here's mine.
Hung with 6 L brackets though I think 4 probably would have been enough.
The brackets are 0.80" thick 5/8"x2"

Looks real good man, I slept on it and i'm thinking of boxing my in like yours.
>>
What you could do is still place a small L on the back but have it above the shelf rather than below

I know they're a little overdone but why not use a french cleat system that way
A) it's a hell of a lot easier to mount and level and
B)Gravity is working with you to keep it mounted up there. L brackets and drilling into studs with large pieces always made me nervous about how much weight I could put on it if I wanted to put books or anything else up there.

Perhaps you should look at something less minimal?

You mention wanting black pipe industrial look in >>1033695 (which is not craftsman) so why not look into industrial shelf brackets?

Floating shelves with hidden hardware look tacky to me and preform poorly.

You can also carve some wooden brackets if you want.

Basically buying basic metal hardware and trying to hide it generally looks shitty, so why not use it as a chance to make something that looks nice?

Also look at using some screen trim around the outside for a nice finished look.

I don't want to google for English name, but there is already a dedicated solution for that purpose.

Pic very related. It's a wall plug that instead of a normal head has just a rod.

A few links in Polish, some of them claim 15kg / 2 plugs, some 30kg / 2 plugs

I have a shelve of this kind in kitchen, it ought to last 50kg; the solution I have is however more sophisticated than the one above, as it has supports (a metal tube) in the shelve itself to prevent wood splintering.

Europeans save this place everytime..
>>
>>1033259
When I did this I drilled holes straight into studs. Shoved in steel rods that fit my bit. Drilled matching holes on the shelving and went to town with a deadblow.

No glue, no fasteners, they're rock solid.
