That record player anon again.
Just did this one
>Bought for $55 off craigslist
>put in the new grill
>bought $50 turntable off Amazon
> bought 30$ Bose computer speakers off ebay
> 5$ Bose emblem
sold for $575 these hipsters in are eating this shit up here in Austin TX. I've sold 4 now with similar margins.
women in their late 20's love these
They sound like complete shit too
I just say it's part of the vinyl experience
>the before pic
To be fair, stores like IKEA and Crate and Barrel sell shit for like a grand with far less build quality (95% MDF and veneer). Most Old furniture does inherently have more value so despite everyone's stupidity it can be worth the $.
You do check the models before you gut them, right?
I love console radios so i always keep an eye out for them. More than a few times I've found sought after units and sold them for $500+ while doing nothing more than loading them into my truck.
Good on you for unloading them on Austin scum though.
>>1029473
This one was gutted already

It's alright. The hipster fucks will be saying it too.
I approve of taking them for every dollar they have. They're going to be bitching even after they get $15/hr at Starbucks, so take what you can.
Excellent thread!

>>1029530
well I'm glad you know how

So like the chips and shit in the front, would you sand those out and refinish?
Also you mentioned you replaced the grill, how exactly did you do that?
Find some kind of artsy fabric or what?

> touch up with a stain felt pen (pic related)

Lel. Good job OP. On all accounts.
>>1029603
Yes! OP fucking rocks.
Kudos for creative capitalism. Find more stuff to sell to hipsters. My antique store bros buy in rural upstate NY then sell to urban buyers who come up to get bulk for resale. They've done this since the 1970s.
You could probably build up to something like that. You have the right frame of mind.
>>1029576
That's devilish. What turntable do you put into it? I'm guessing it's some crosley or some other cheap shit.
>>1029458
I like how you see the value of your products.
>>1029456
I'm doing something similar with my father but, it's just old car doors. These faggots in California would swallow shit if it came with an old logo. The last time we sold a door it wasn't even an old door it was from a totalled Prius. We repainted it red with an old Chevy logo in blue and yellow. Replaced the glass put in faux leather and sold the shit for $600 to a guy who said he “admires how well it looks although it is so old and wants to discover it's unique story for himself”. Faggots these days.
>>1029984

Serious question: How much are you getting paid per hour (profit divided by hours spent, no fucking around, travel time etc counts) to do this shit vs how much would you be paid per hour to use the same skills at a job where you collect a paycheck.
>>1029988
No he doesn't, because it never happened.
>>1030013

I think the thing is funny but the "INFINITY FREE DOLLARS" thing seems kinda overstated.
>>1030145
I agree that he's probably making it seem more simple than it its. I'd imagine most of the difficulty comes from finding someone willing to spend hundred on obsolete retro technology.
>>1030221
You'd be surprised at what people are willing to buy, 10 or 20 years ago people were throwing 50's - 60's furniture away like it had the plague, now it's called "mid-century modern" and people are fighting to buy up good clean examples.
>>1029521
Yes, do it as often and as long as you can, you obviously enjoy the process and extra cash is always welcome, also it's one less thing going into the landfill.
>>1029972

I've never seen these on Craigslist in austin, the op is a faggot liar
>>1030145
The flaw in your argument is how many hours a job is offering. If he's got unproductive free time at home that he can't reasonably fill with a second job or overtime.
Also fucking around in craigslist.org takes so little attention that he can multitask it with something "leisurely " like shit posting in 4chan.
>>1030470
maybe OP is doing this on the side/on weekends?
>>1031096
I just bought a 1965 Westinghouse with a BSR turntable and tuner and 8 track. Shit is like new, makes my new Ministry and Prong records sound amazing. BTW I paid 20 bucks for the entire thing, it was like new.
I was thinking of modding it with a cd player in place of the 8 track, but we'll see.
>>1031099
This 1960 motorola is my baby. It sounds so good with its original "15 woofer.
It retailed for $500 in 1960 or $3600 in today's money.

I needed a gold one to match the gold caps on the legs ;)
Austinite here, the hipster market is real.
If you're handy with bikes you can fix up old Japanese motorcycles from the 70s (buy them for a couple hundred $$ from some farmers barn or from up north) fix those fuckers up again and sell them for like 2 grand or more (honda cb350s will fetch ridiculous prices)
>>1031099
If you mod it, keep all the original parts and try and make an 'adaptor' with the cd drive that fits in the original 8 track slot. If you sell later on to a purist collector, it could then be restored to original.
Personally, I'd adapt it for bluetooth as an 'invisible' conversion.
>>1031099
Have a look around this site. They will sell samples and they are cheap.

I can't really find these types of consoles where I live, are they an American thing?
Also what's to stop you from just making your own consoles from scratch? Sell them as limited edition so hipsters want it even more.

FYI that little logo can get you prison time.
18 U.S. Code § 2320 - Trafficking in counterfeit goods or services

(3) traffics in goods or services knowing that such good or service is a counterfeit military good or service the use, malfunction, or failure of which is likely to cause serious bodily injury or death, the disclosure of classified information, impairment of combat operations, or other significant harm to a combat operation, a member of the Armed Forces, or to national security, or
(4) traffics in a drug and knowingly uses a counterfeit mark on or in connection with such drug,
or attempts or conspires to violate any of paragraphs (1) through (4) shall be punished as provided in subsection (b).
(b) Penalties.—
(1)In general.—Whoever commits an offense under subsection (a)—
(A) if an individual, shall be fined not more than $2,000,000 or imprisoned not more than 10 years, or both, and, if a person other than an individual, shall be fined not more than $5,000,000; and
(B) for a second or subsequent offense under subsection (a), if an individual, shall be fined not more than $5,000,000 or imprisoned not more than 20 years, or both, and if other than an individual, shall be fined not more than $15,000,000.

So don't do it in the future, it's astronomically unlikely that you'll be caught by law enforcement but honestly the risk is not worth the markup for the logo.

doubt anyone would get more then minimum wage working for someone else in a shop refinishing/re-purposing old furniture... plus its CASH (i.e. no taxes). this is the kind of thing one can do in the evening or weekends outside of one's regular paying job. if its enjoyable to the person then all the better. making extra CASH with a hobby.
>>1032081
>Also what's to stop you from just making your own consoles from scratch? Sell them as limited edition so hipsters want it even more.
you could but from scratch is a lot more work and part of the whole hipster "thing" is things that are retro/vintage as well as a dash or re-use or re-cycle (save from landfill)...
if you could sell the made from scratch retro looking version for $1500+ then perhaps it'd be worth it. the pain in the ass part will be finishing the wood to the level these old ones already have. with the old ones you just touch-up and clean and yer already in the money. the old ones are already "limited editions" as there aren't a whole lot around.
>>1033099
those look more 1970s... I'd gander that most hipsters go for '60s or '50s. the whole danish modern look.

1950s/1960s "Danish Modern"
I have one I restored, bought it from a local thrift shop for $30, had a blow left channel. Turns out one of the power transistors friend so after $15 in parts and tools it runs fine. Its a 1972 model so its not as nice as the 50s ones

Try estate sales on the last day. Good audio equipment like McIntosh or Marantz will go immediately, but broken or dirty console stereos will stick around until the end when you can haggle the price down a lot.
>>1029578
It's not stealing, it's free market. The hipsters buy this because there is a mutual agreement about the need of exchange of goods.

>INFINITY FREE DOLLARS

mighty snag this in my area. $50, puts out static in both channels, could be a simple cap fix.
its not 1950s but its close. How do i talk him down with him telling me "blah blah its 50 years old its not perfect so what"
>>1036690
Depends on how low you want to go. If you try and chop 50% off the price they'll probably refuse. Maybe offer 35-40 and go from there. I almost never haggle once the price has been agreed upon unless theres something wrong with it that I wasn't aware of. So be up front. I find its best to agree on a price as soon as possible. When I selling I'm willing to negotiate when we're still on the phone or through email. If you agree to my price and then want me to lower it after we've met I wont budge. Thats just wasting someones time.
>>1036696
Well maybe 50 isnt THAT bad of a price. based on all the other pictures the unit looks to be in good shape, except for some scraches in the wood.
What I was planning on doing was going there and popping off the back panel, and if it was full of dust/webs/bugs/dirty components, I'd offer him 40. but i wouldnt go any lower than that

>>1036892
should I even bother to ask open it up? or give it a visual lookover and offer $40
IMO the unit seems to be in great shape, looks like it was kept inside for a while. static could just be dirty pots. although i'm doing a recap either way. might work against me if i open it and its clean.
>>1029456
OP have your (or anyone else) done recaps on these?
For this guy >>1036690 nearly all of them are axial caps, which are pretty expensive - to do a full recap with axials would cost me about as much as it costs to buy it. Can i use radial caps in place of axials? is it just an issue of making sure the leads can reach both sides?
>>1029984
