Profitable making general.

How do you turn your maker abilities and collection of diverse, yet half-assed skills into something marketable?
>>
>>1029080
>learn to weld
>???
>profit

Hardly anybody knows how to weld so it's pretty easy.
>>
>>1029107
I have a TIG welder. I can weld, but I have no formal training or certifications.

There's a lot of liability in many welding repair/production jobs.
>>
>>1029113
I guess it depends on where you're located.
I nearly finished welding school and I can make a lot of things no problem without having to get certified.
>>
>>1029107
>Hardly anybody knows how to weld so it's pretty easy.

Every birdshit so-called welder thinks they can run a business.

Running a profitable welding business is not easy. If you want to make money, practice until you can pass a 6G pipe test and go apply for jobs. You can also hire on as a helper and learn on the job.

You can certainly practice at home to a professional level and verify your weld integrity. Fab a bend tester and bend test coupons to check your work. There is plenty of specific info on welding forums. It doesn't fit on /diy/ threads.

The way to turn your diverse abilities into money is use them to be awesome working jobs where they make you valuable! I wrench, weld, machine, do basic wiring and that's gotten me a comfy life.
>>
>>1029117
I was talking about making basic shit out of metal and selling it for a profit, which I did on multiple occasions already since I started trade school.
I never talked about running a fucking business.

why are welders on the internet this fucking hostile
>>
>>1029119
They have small penises and are scared of mexicans taking their jerbs.
>>
>>1029119
>why are welders on the internet this fucking hostile
Because they're on the internet? Oh, and also because this is 4chan, where hostile=cool.
>>
>>1029116
Any weld repair that I could possibly make would leave me liable. Production shops would want me to be certified.

I'm not artistic enough to make anything that someone would pay money for.

>>1029117
I'm not looking to start a welding business. If I have to do some welding as part of it, that's fine. I'm not a weldor and don't plan on becoming one.

As for finding work, I'm actually trying to find a new job as an engineer. I've been out of work for a few months now and I'm bored to tears. I'm not finding enough mechanical/manufacturing related jobs in the Denver area and I'm getting ZERO feedback from what I do apply to.

So, I'm entertaining the idea of putting my vast collection of tools and half-assed skills to use elsewhere.

It's another level completely.
See pages like ratemyweld on jewbook and take a look at the comments.
>>
>>1029123
You'd be surprised. There's a guy we went to high school with and now 10 years later he started welding stupid shit together and calling it art.

I don't think he's exactly rolling in cash, but another buddy bought a thing for $400 from him.

Also, make fire pit type grills and sell for $200.
>>
>>1029140
I don't need to roll in cash, I just need to stop eating into my savings.
>>
i listed them all down
took some classes to make them offical (some)
and, with examples of things i made with my skill set (im a tactile kinesthetic learner)

and i went to a job interview at a factory

and now im factory king
>>
>>1029080
What do you have a lot of for free or cheap, and what do people need in your area?, if you can match these two up then you are in business.

Do you have a workspace and tools?
>>
>>1029123
>I'm not artistic enough to make anything that someone would pay money for.

I knew a guy who used to collect scrap metal, old cogs from bikes, cars or whatever, anything that had an unusual shape, then he would weld them up into a hollow sphere and sell them for big bucks as garden sculptures to yuppie idiots with more cash than sense.

You don't have to clever or original, you just have to be able to copy shit you see selling on the internet, get a nice website made up and take a few "arty" pictures of your "creations" against a white backdrop and you can sell just about anything.

Take a look at this guy, he is doing exactly what you want to do, go make up ten things to sell then make a website and see what happens.

I want to be self employed or work professionally as an engineer (for which I have a degree and 5 years of experience).

I'm not interested in being a fabricator, technician, assembler for someone else.

>>1029205
>What do you have a lot of for free or cheap
Time.

>Do you have a workspace and tools?
Yes and yes. I have enough money to buy any additional tools beyond
>mostbasic power tools (I need a chop saw and table saw to round out my collection)
>all basic hand tools
>TIG welder
>large drill press
>4x6 band saw
>3D printer and intermediate CAD ability

Do you have a PE?

>I have enough money to buy any additional tools beyond

how much money are you willing to spend to become self sufficient?
>>
>>1029123
>I'm not finding enough mechanical/manufacturing related jobs in the Denver area and I'm getting ZERO feedback from what I do apply to.

what? are you serious? i got 4 offers from a bunch of manufacturing places in Denver. did you go to CSM?
>>
>>1029237
I'll check it out.

>>1029239
>Do you have a PE?
No. I'm mechanical and focused on manufacturing. Not very many PEs floating around in manufacturing.

>>1029239
>how much money are you willing to spend to become self sufficient?
Depends on what I'm buying and the likelihood of return. I could spend up to $5,000 if it means I can keep my head above water without a boss.

>>1029240
I went to school in New York. Moved out here over a year ago. My girlfriend is a project engineer at a small aerospace company in the area. I was contracting for ~6 months after moving here. I have an LLC set up already.

Name some places I should apply. I'm in North Denver and I'm not finding much. If I was a software guy, I'm sure it would be a lot easier.

I'm competing with senior level guys (I have 5 years as a project engineer/manager) that are willing to work for less than $30/hr for a 4 month temp contract. It's getting tiresome.
>>
if you make it profitable, you will end up hating it. trust me.
>>
>>1029248
That's every job. That isn't the point, I need to make money and I'm not getting interviews. I have tools, skills, and time. If I can pay some bills, that would be wonderful.

Maybe you should invest in a CNC wood machine like the X-Carve or one of it's rivals, then you could make signs and cut out all kinds of stuff.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jp1cvDowck8
>>
>>1029271
Of course I subscribe to him. My subscription feed if full of ~60 makers/machinists/welders/hackers/faggots.

I watch so much "making" on jewtube that I've even started my own shitty project videos.

>>1029273
That would be pretty easy. I already have the CAD experience and have run 2.5D router and a CNC plasma table. I feel like there's already a lot of custom sign shops out there (google Maps confirms that there are lots of sign shops in Denver).
>>
>>1029247
>Name some places I should apply.

Primus Aerospace, NREL. If you don't mind the commute, Colorado Springs has a bunch of stuff too.

I also know a bunch of mediumish sized job shops that are looking for an engineer. shit, what do you know about Zeiss CMM/Calypso? If you can work Calypso I know a dude who will pay you 50$ an hour.
>>
>>1029279
oh, Sundyne and Barber-Nichols too. had to think about that a second.
>>
>>1029279
Springs is a no-go. I'm north of Denver and the commute on I-25 would kill me.

I'll keep an eye out at those other places.

I have zero CMM experience. The closest thing I have is using one of those semi-automated optical comparators when I worked for Remington Arms. Beyond that, I'm quite good at programming and know enough about GD&T.

A small-medium job shop would be an idea environment for me. The bulk of my experience if in small manufacturing (15 employees) so I'm used to doing basically everything.

Thanks for the tips!!

>>1029281
I've sent a few applications to Sundyne, no bites. I have to check out Barber-Nichols.

If you wanna chat/work on something/whatever, feel free to email me, my GMAIL username is calatron
>>
>>1029275
>I feel like there's already a lot of custom sign shops out there (google Maps confirms that there are lots of sign shops in Denver).
Doesn't have to be signs, your imagination is your limit.
>>
>>1029283
>I have zero CMM experience.
you need to get some. the CMM guys in this area are pretty much holding shop owners hostage around Denver.

>A small-medium job shop would be an idea environment for me.

in that case. Denver Machine Shop, James Engineering, and Stacy Tool.

i'll email you if something comes up or i get some free time. there is definitely a need for more manufacturing guys around here.
>>
>>1029288
>the CMM guys in this area are pretty much holding shop owners hostage around Denver.
Good to know. My girlfriend has the chance to become the "CMM guy" where she works since she is decent at programming and awesome at GD&T/CAD. I told her to jump at it. Thanks for validating my assumption.

James Engineering looks right up my alley with their custom semi-automated deburring equipment. I have a lot of experience managing and designing similar projects, and programming the PLCs for them. (Actually for pharma applications, but close enough.)

>Production shops would want me to be certified.

Most shops will have you weld coupons which they bend test and/or x-ray. Paper certs don't mean anything when an applicant can't pass a test, but you can practice to pass and get hired. Y

Many fab shops just have you run a few welds if they are doing MIG. My local trailer manufacturer does nearly all MIG and most of it horizontal for cosmetic reasons. (It's easier and faster to rotate the trailer than deal with uphill and overhead MIG welding.)

If you are jobless working as a welder is better than no job after unemployment runs out.

You might look into CAD drafting since you are an engineer. Comfy work.

Do your skills include mechanics? Machining? Plant maintenance might be a good fit because you know how to weld, read prints, do CAD etc. I enjoyed it before joining the Air Force. Plant maintenance is interesting, something new breaks every day, and you will be the last guy they lay off if you know all their specialty equipment.

If you are mobile you can check with Continental Tire in Sumter, SC. The need engineers last I heard from my machinistbro. They'll have close to a billion bucks in that new plant after the expansion.

Charleston is nearby with Boeing and subcontractors.

If you are planning to become a "maker" then one of the best ways to come up with ideas is to do Google image searches, pick a subject like "bench" or "homemade Bench" and scroll through all the pictures for inspiration, I keep a folder called "interest" where I keep all of the things I see that give me ideas about things I want to make, I have 730mb in that folder alone.

PE means Professional engineer.
Are you an EIT? If not, your engineering degree is almost worthless to an engineering firm, but "engineering" like plant management or building automation won't care.
>>
>>1031058
>PE means Professional engineer.
Really?

Most "engineering" jobs don't require a PE. Basically, if you aren't stamping prints (structural is a big one) most jobs do not require and do not ask for a PE.

If you are a Civil, you need to be on track to get your PE.

This is in the US. Any asshole can be an engineer here and even call themselves an engineer (in most states it is NOT a protected title). It you're in Canada, or the UK, or many other places, what I'm saying does not hold true.

if you want to make money on the side or be self employed, having a PE is required regardless of your discipline.
>>

You didn't read this thread at all.
>>
>>1031576
let me rephrase. if you want to be self employed or do stuff on the side in an engineering capacity, you need a PE.

happy?
>>
>>1031578
I currently do consulting work for automation. Most engineering-related fields have no use for a PE. Most states do not require a PE to even call yourself an "Engineer" or offer "engineering services" as long as you don't claim to be a "Professional Engineer."

"Engineering" in the US is a blanket term. Unless you're doing something that directly endangers public safety, there is no need for a PE. Structural, buildings, civil-anything all require a PE. Manufacturing, mechanical design (depending on the application), electrical, etc, do not need a PE.

Does that mean that an employer is more likely to hire you to consult if you have a PE, absolutely. To say that a PE is required to do engineering work in the US is simply untrue.

If you sealed documents aren't required for the job, then a PE is not necessary. It depends on the risk involved and your liability exposure. Thousands of products and companies are developed and run without any PEs in sight.

If you want to get into an argument about what is and isn't "Engineering" the US is not the place to have it.
