You guys have it way better over there in the US, every time I come over there for a race I am amazed at how much more passionate Americans are when they go to see racecars, also the way they organise races or even how they set up the paddocks so tourists can see everything is something that is almost absent here in yurop.

Manual machinist with 21 years experience 11 of which in the power generation field. 6 of those years were bearing repair, and some new manufacture. It was common to run tolerances as close as +.0005/-0 on a bore with around 6-46 inch bore over a 10-50 inch length. On 75 year old equipment in some cases. The closest I've ran is +/-.0002. Now I'm at a different shop that is all new manufacture. I just finished up two heat sinks for Siemens.

I'm a general contractor. I got licensed as a home inspector last year, but getting work for that is slow. I do mostly remodels on homes, top to bottom, even the driveway. I do some contract painting for a realty company that manages apartments and condos. I make little crappy wooden decorations and shelves to sell to people who's homes I work on. I landscape every summer because I enjoy it. Basically I just never say no to a job. I explain to the customer that I'm not an expert if I'm not, they're usually ok with a discount over an expert. Being a contractor isn't hard, anons. Go to bars, talk to people, tell them you're a contractor, hand them your card, ask what they're thinking of working on in their home (people are always unhappy with SOME aspect of their home), tell them 'i can do that!', 20% of the time they'll call you to look at it (if you're not a complete autist), go check out the job, guesstimate how many hours it will take you and multiply by $45, add that number to the cost of supplies, make a nice estimate document with your logo on top and legalese on bottom, hand deliver the estimate, when they accept get your 30% to begin and buy supplies and any tools you may need, watch YouTube videos on project, hire neighborhood kid to be your gopher for $50/day, do work, be honest with the customer always, make it quality, get paid, put sign with your logo and number in front yard, tell them to tell their friends, go back to the bar, get more work. Do this, anons, you will live a happy life.

Currently a roofer. I was legitimately a carpenter with the UBC for 6 years, I've also done electrical, plumbing, fences, concrete etc. etc. in various jobs over the years. And I have to say, roofing fucking sucks.
I've been thinking of starting a fencing company, to get away from the roofing.
We've got a couple of guys that we sub gutter-work out to, that have gotten me motivated. These are two dudes, mid 20's. They met a guy that wanted out of gutter work, he gave them his truck and gutter machine, and basically said, "get work, pay me when you can". They put up signs around town, they did a good job, word spread, and they now have work booked out for months .They've gotten to a point where they usually hit it hard 4 days a week, take 3 day weekends, and aren't exactly hurting for money. If that's not motivational anons, I don't know what is.

I free climb to get there though

you would have to fire my entire crew for it too and none of the rides would be inspected

>>
>>1021331
There are many non-union schools, but a lot of them are very sketchy. For example, a coworker of mine went to school that got caught telling employers that the students had a clean record even though many were felons. I'm also being told that I could get away with not going to school since I already have the job and could just ride the experience. I'm not taking their word for it, though. Another thing I'm told is that union apprentices do mostly clean up and dirty work whereas non-union apprentices are put into things they can learn and practice right away. This is all just hearsay, though. I'm probably just as clueless as you.

Is it unwise to move into a skilled trade if i am gay (not effeminate just gay)

Thinking of applying with the ibew48 for commerical/industrial apprenticeship.

Pretty thick skinned and there are probably no klansmen in oregon just wondering if it's a bad idea.
>>
>>1022517
You're gonna run into bigots no matter where you go you fucking faggot. I can't speak for Oregon, but where I live it's pretty much only middle aged men who have a problem with fags. Young people, and surprisingly elderly people are past it, even at my church.

Uhh I dunno about the klan, but the Pacific Northwest definitely has some pockets of white supremacists. Nobody cares if you're gay though.
>>
>>1022517
Err, never heard about Grant's Pass huh?

The rest of the state is probably fine. Like the other anon said though, you'll run into prejudice everywhere, and frankly, the typical demographics of blue collar trades probably won't help. But if you are interested, you should just do it anyway. Just be skillful and hardworking and don't give anyone a reason to complain. Northeast and northwest are pretty tolerant parts of the country. I'm from Massachusetts and some of the guys I ran boilers with were gay and everyone pretty much liked them and gave them relentless good-natured shit about it. Where im forced to live now, in southern Missouri, your life would be hell and no likely pay rate would be enough to endure the complete savagery you'd encounter. You should be totally fine but just go into it expecting some abrasive shitheads. Just work hard and don't be a pussy.

I know its literally impossible to do and the thought wouldn't have crossed your mind but as long as you don't tell people your a poofter then how would they know?
I know its hard but if you avoid saying things like 'im gay' or 'phwoar look at his butt in those jeans' and as long as you don't come into work in a dress or have a banana for lunch and eat it one go without chewing it and you don't close your eyes when your boss kisses you then nobody will know.
You say you aren't camp so what's the issue? Most people don't realise they are ok with benders until they discover a friend is gay and actually its not a big deal because they don't fucking harp on about it all the time

My mom is 49 and will start studying economy at uni next month, coming from a background of manual welding and robot programming. Not exactly a DIY trade, but I think it'll serve for an age example.

You're nowhere near as old as you feel. Society at large just has a really messed up idea of how life should be. But it'll get harder the longer you put it off. You don't really have the perspective to know what you want to do, or the ability to choose, so start with whatever you can get by. You can change later.

If your situation is utterly hopeless, start going to church and get to know people. Not kidding. Someone will need extra help with something, or simply take pity and hook you up.

Nuclear scientist turned stay at home mom and now I follow the board for house maintenance and what not. This past week y'all helped me with a dish washer and now I'm slowly replacing all the water inlet valves in the house. I've done a few things like install cabinets, crown mounding and minor plumbing and electricity here and there. My goal is by the end of the year to get enough /diy/ under my belt to open up the empty space under my stairs and add it to my laundry room.

Is carpentry still a good field to get into?

I like building things, architecture, and hands on work but can't find any apprenticeships and I'm worried that dropping out of college may be a bad decision.

Plus one day I'd love to get into house flipping and it seems doing something like carpentry and being a owner of a team would be beneficial.
>>
>>1032425
You don't own a team, you employ them.
Fucking asshole.
>>
>>1032425
contact your local of the untied brotherhood of carpenters and they will hook you up
the summer is the busiest time of the year so they are always looking for people

dont work non union its a shit show full of Mexicans and retards

also you get a pension, insurance of all kinds and my most favorite part you never apply for jobs the jobs apply for you
you just put your name on the out of work list and company's will start contacting you and you just show up and start working no applications or interview bullshit
>>
>>1032426

Carpenters make very little money. Like $26/hour is the union wage where im from.

I would advice you to stay in school and complete your degree if you went there on a loan.

You can still enroll in the apprenticeship after if you want to.

Good work anon. Way to be.
>>
>>1032426
Lol, DO NOT get into flipping. Please anon. You WILL absolutley lose your ass. With your skills you should buy budget properties in appreciating areas and fix them up to rent or sell on a lease option (rent to own) you can find a property management company and never even talk to your tennants or deal with a clogged toilet. They take like 6%-8%. If you would like to sell them. Keep them rented and then list them for sale. But ONLY after 1 year and 1 day after the closing of the property or uncle sam will straight throat rape you on taxes. You have a great skill anon. Fixing up houses that need tlc to improve rents is forcing appreciation. Add that to the hopes u purchased appreciant property and the tax rightoffs real estate gives you. ...anon you can run 10 teams. I highly suggest you read a book called rich dad poor dad and then a few on reak estate investing.

web security analyst (malware cleaner) for a big security company. client base is 75% wordpress sites. people get very superstitious when it comes to malware. One lady thought her site was infected when outlook displayed a wrong password popup on her desktop. another favorite is bluehost reporting "Silence is golden" as malware...
>>
>>1032456

Yea I know, but I'm willing to look past that if it's something that I enjoy and I was under the impression that the money can actually be huge if you become a manager and/or have your own team and decide to get into the house flipping business. Cause my end goal is to have rental properties and probably do some house flipping as it looks really interesting. At least on hgtv... But it does also seem to have some aspects that I like. Hands on work, money, house design, etc.

>>1032464

I think your reply was meant for me, but I'm not currently in the industry. But like I told the other guy, I'd probably do a combination of both.
>>
>>1032456

And it's kind of hard to stay motivated to finish the degree when you're always wondering if it's a waste of time because it's not your "passion" or you're not passionate about it. Doesn't help that people commonly say that if you don't love it and do it in your sleep you'll amount to nothing, seeing as there will be programmers who programmed out the womb and IT people that study in all their freetime.

The only way to make money flipping is to do damn near all the work yourself, and get as much of your supplies secondhand.
>>
>>1032777

Yea you could do that, but assuming you were doing multiple flips a year wouldn't you be better off with your own renovation team? It'd be cheaper than hiring it out to someone else, and quicker/less work than doing it all by yourself.

Union electrician here. I'd highly recommend joining a union. Besides the better pay and benefits, the education is top notch and much more varied. Its a five year program for most commercial/industrial apprenticeships and every year they rotate you to a new company so you get more experience/connection in the trade. Also most really big fun work (medium voltage, industrial motor controls &PLC's, big gear-rooms in huge buildings) goes to union contractors bc of their generally higher quality of work.

Joining is just googling your local IBEW chapter and applying to become an apprentice, though that can take like 8 months to get through the process, or asking if the union hall can get you a job as a CW (construction wireman, like the labors of union electricians) and help you get your foot in the door.

The only people who leave Unions are people get kicked out/fired so many times they leave. Mostly because they don't follow rules. The fucking basic kind of rules like

>don't show up to work so fucking hungover you're still drunk
>no you can't take three weeks off work until you can get your license back from your dui
>no you cant order an extra 60ft of wire on every run and then take home the "scraps"
>actually it is your fault the job ran over the bid. You took off early every day and ordered the wrong material several times and only seem to have a basic understanding of reading prints.

For the most part they're just a bunch of fuck-offs who can't stand being told that their incorrect way of "getting the job done" is either unsafe or pants-on-head retarded. I've met plenty of skilled tradesmen who've never been in a union, but never met anyone other than a complete shit head who's left one.

Oil rigs, (well not just oil rigs but any rigs, geothermal, gas etc). Due to the recent downturn im back on the tools running tubes. Killer 12 hr shifts again. Used to be involved in drilling but theres no exploration work so had to take what I can.
Made my money though, bought my own home outright and have no debts.
Would like to get out of this game altogether and buy a house in the countryside, with fruit tree's and a few animals and be self sustainable and live in the peace and quiet.
Probably the decision will be made for me as more lay-offs look likely.
Live on the beach atm, so cant complain.
