Hi /diy/ does anyone have any info on building a small (~20') camping type boat for mostly calm inland water use?

It really is. The campy dress up stuff in it is pretty funny too.

Do an interweb search on Shanty boats. You will get returns on all grades on live aboard homemade boats.

man... re-chinking that thing would be so easy.. at least the sides, I wonder how the underside of the bow is layer up?

looks to me like 1/3 of the boat is sloped. and that the weight is carried aft. I wonder though, how that sail is suppose to work, is there a keel missing on that thing? also wonder how well that thing would steer

looks fun though, 8/10 would own.

as for your question OP. depends how much boat building you willing to learn. and what style.

if like pic related. then the hardest part would be finding a piece of timber large enough for your mast. and finding a trailer to haul it around on.. without a welder of some sort, its not gonna come cheaply. also boat motors are expensive as hell if you want one of those too. also being able to calculate bouncy is pretty important too, along with lots of other math. wood floats, but it weights a lot too.

Even if you go the diy route, it's significantly more expensive than building a land-based camper trailer.

You can sometimes pick up lifeboats cheaply if you look, they are sturdy as fuck and can be converted pretty easily, if you have any boatyards or boat breakers near you then that is a good place to start, especially if they deal with medium to large ships.

What is your budget?

First time on this board. Happy to find a boat thread. Michalak has some good plans if you head over to Duckworks. Bolger and Payson had some plans along the lines of what you're looking for. I just got back from visiting Sam Devlin's shop here in Olympia, WA. Avoid his plans unless you want mostly pretty and overpriced.

Unless you only want it to last a few years, make a fiberglass hull. Maintaining a wooden boat is a lot of work.
