Extremely late response, but my reasoning for liking socket amputees is that I don't like the look of scars or bare stumps. Something about it turns me off. Also, the sleek and artificial nature of sockets attached to amputees is appealing to me.

And I meant to say in my previous post: "it ensures your amputee is capable of taking care of herself". The aspect of a "modular" amputee is fascinating and the attachments plugged into the sockets don't necessarily have to be human limbs.

Nevertheless, to each their own.

I got your point. Amputations IRL are indeed rarely pretty, and making them non-permanent solves a lot of moral and logistical questions.
However, as an engineer, I can't help but cringe on most of these designs. The most practical socket would look like a normal amputation site with a "rod" in the middle, not a plate glued to freshly cut limb. There's no need to cover entite limb's width, unless it adds a point of articulation (which is the case with Aegis, not as much with that Winry pic). It's heavier, it's more prone to infections and like, it's absolutely unnecessary since it only connects to the bone anyway.

I like to see the sockets as more technologically advanced covers, like the ones in >>6925052.

When it comes to logistics and "realism", the socket would be made of some fictional inert material which won't get rejected when grafted on tissue. Because the sockets are attached to the muscle and bone of an amputee, it would provide more support for heavier limbs. Besides, most modern day prosthetics respond to muscle movements where limbs used to be, so the sensors needed to do so can be built directly into the sockets. This would remove the need to insert electrodes into the amputee's brain.

I also think rods sticking out of the shoulders and pelvis of an amputee looks off-putting. It may be why when it comes to amputees I prefer ones where the limbs are completely removed, so they have a more "streamlined" appearance. Also, they resemble babies bundled up in a blanket, which I think is adorable. It just makes you want to take care of them and cuddle, but at the same time they can have limbs attached and be self-dependent if your mood changes.
