So I'm watching this for the first time in years and holy fuck it holds up so well.
And the soundtrack.
Underappreciated movies thread I guess?
When I watched this and the original American Tail as a kid, I liked this one a lot more.
>>95362802
>And the soundtrack.
I was shocked than Hans fucking Zimmer was behind it.
>>95362857
I can get behind this logic.
It's more fun.
The first one is really good but it's also such a downer.

THIS
>>95362802
There's some fucking great atmosphere in that movie. The lighting and imagery of the indians thinking that Tiger is a god was fantastic. And I'll always love that intro sequence where Fievel imagines himself in the west, and then things slowly transform back to his New York reality when his mom calls him to dinner.
>>95364522
It was pretty spot on with kids playing in the backyard.
Man movies really knew their audiences back then
>>95362802 (OP)
No, this movies is plenty appreciated by /co/. If anything is underrated, it's the first American Tail. Last time I tried to make a thread about that movie I learned that it's a boring downer that doesn't stand up to any of Disney's films from that decade. Silly me for remembering it as an award-winning tour de force of animation.
>>95363702
Original American Tail was unironically about a bunch of jewish folks immigrating to a new country and kicking out all the ones who actually lived there so they could have more for themselves.
>>95365627
Jesus fucking Christ /pol/ fuck off
>>95365634
Literally the plot of the movie. Didn't need to twist or make up a single thing, that's what happens. Cats were there first and the specifically and repeatedly stated to be jewish mice put them on a ship towards a whole other country at the end of the movie and cheer how there aren't anymore cats in America. Not like the movie pretends they're wild and uncontrollable monsters, Tiger is in the movie after all.
Seriously what happens, rewatch the movie.

My fine African American gentleman.
The third movie opening with Fievel in New York saying, "I dreamed we moved out west," wrote the entire third film off for me. I don't care if you can mental gymnastic it as 'foreshadowing', what they intended was obvious.

>>95366796
Correct. Neither of them hold a candle to either of the originals.
I remember this one vividly
I had one of those CD-ROM storybook things with this movie, gotta rewatch both one of these days
I wish Don Bluth got one of those Director Blu Ray compilation sets
I love this movie's critter-frontier aesthetic, what else has that kinda old-west-town-made-from-trash deal aside from this and Rango?
>>95366893
This wouldn't be on it. Fieval Goes West is like the Land Before Time sequels - Don wasn't involved in any capacity.

>>95366916

>>95365799
How did I fuck up? I deleted the original because I left a few words out, but the message was the same: this movie isn't underrated by /co/, the first one is.
>we're talking about the sequel
No duh.
>>95367968
>If anything is underrated, it's the first American Tail
You're right. I read both those entirely wrong. You were clear, and I fucking breezed through them too quickly because I wanted to find the differences between the posts as opposed to actually reading the content. I apologize.
>>95366854
Same. Glad to find someone else here doesn't necessarily think the sequel is superior just because it's funnier. They're both good at what they do.

>>95367008

>>95368008

>>95368015
This is entirely true, but they're both entirely different movies. Fievel: An American Tail is a wonderful animated drama. It hits hard and is something to really think about. In all honesty, I never appreciated it as a kid. It wasn't until I was in my teens that I really even understood what it was about, let alone appreciating the story for it. Meanwhile, Fievel Goes West is just straight fun with an underlying veil of depression that you only see when you get older. It actually does have a lot serious elements but those are kind of hidden to kids.
American Tail is definitely the better movie, but I think Goes West is the much more enjoyable movie.

This is so true. I rewatched it for the first time as an adult recently, and while I laughed my butt off, I felt strangely sad afterward. I blame the song "Dreams", though it could be something deeper than that.
>>95362802
Reminder that this was rendered noncannon so they could make a shitty sequeal and tv series back in New York.
Boy, was it awkward seeing this movie first and then going back to the first one. That definitely threw me for a spin.

>>95368950
I didn't know for a long time either.
>>95368371
For me, it was the visual representation of the American Dream versus the reality. The movie did those beautiful fantasy vs. reality moments, and when father Mousekewitze describes how their new home will soon be an oasis, the animation shows the water tower leaking and greenery just shooting up all over the town, with bridges built over rivers and mice happily engaging each other.
And then he finishes, and it's back to reality. A fucking can in the dirt, and a tiny mud puddle near them. And then it gets worse.
>>95369031
I mean, isn't that how the dream of the West was then?
Like Cat. R Waul's puppeteering accurately did the thing of hey look at this untouched paradise all waiting for you, it's nothing but opportunity.
And then people get there and it's just. Desert.
>>95369046
Yeah. Exactly. That's what I'm saying. Granted, most people didn't end up in deserts. Outside of the southwest there aren't deserts in America, but people didn't find Gardens of Eden like they expected. They found nature, and they had to adapt and survive.
>>95368517
>>95368564
It seems I was not wrong that you degenerates belong on /aco/.

>>95368950
Yeah, I remember it being on CBS, Cat R Waul being the main bad guy. It didn't last long though, last episode I remember was one of the biggest Cats in the series protecting Feviel's baby sister and even beating up Waul over her. Mostly the line of Waul telling the spider to "shut up and find my face." after the beating.
>>95368950
>Cowboys of Moo Mesa
But do you remember The Legend of Calamity Jane?
>>95372918
The same reason they shit on StarToons, TMS, and John K. Basically, if you look back on 80's or 90's animation with any fondness you're an autist with shitty taste. Never mind that no serious animation critic would hold any of those artists in disregard. A lot of anons here just like to be contrarians.
>>95372937
Was the role of Waul reprised by John Cleese?

You're right, I don't get it. Each film explored a different chapter in the life of a young Russian immigrant. Unless there was some mass conversion of Russian-American Jews to Christianity in the late 1800s, I don't see why Fievel would be a Christian by the 6th one.

I remember going back after not seeing it for a while and thinking it was less epic than I remembered. As a writer I'm obligated to support it just because it encourages kids to read.
>>95397756
was definitely less epic than i remembered, also shorter
also, i get it was meant to promote reading..but then why use a nerdy shut in who quotes facts and statistics? he obviously reads already
would hit a bit stronger with a less nerdy main character i think, like, if theyd be a bit of a jock or something and hadnt been scared or worried at first, before being confronted by Mr Hyde or Ahab and Moby Dick, finding themselves in awe and coping with the fantasy and fiction around them
What about this gem that seems to be glossed over to often
