Even if it's not straight up tracing, copying 90% of the pose and using it for a variant cover to a Marvel comic is a bad idea and in some cases as bad as tracing. And it is lazy, kind of ruins the point of doing a variant if it's half assed.

Francesco Mattina is the venom cover artist who I have been a fan of for a long time & have never seen anything to suggest he traces.

And even if he did steal the pose, his piece has 50 times more rendering & detail in it & Is clearly the superior final illustration.

There is a difference between taking a series of photographic visual references and then doing a photorealistic painting based on those references and modifying someones existing work as your own.
