do you think they start writing every season by asking the question how can we make this sad as fuck?
>>
>>95203831
I just got done watching it.

I'm fucked up.
>>
Well, I don't think it's done by accident.
>>
>>95203831
Well I've got half a mind.
>>
The eleventh episode is probably the first time a cartoon has genuinely scared me. At least the last moment of the season was a little more upbeat even if pb and diane are probably going to get a divorce

>also inb4 people get mad about the mass shooting episode and todd's asexuality

>also inb4 people get mad about the mass shooting episode

I'm personally not really mad about it, but it's just kind of annoying.

Bojack is a show that is more than capable of handling political/societal stuff with a peculiar grace, lampooning things in a very grey manner. For instance, the hilarious background digs at Buzzfeed or how Mr. PB's well-meaning but simpleminded talk can sway people because a lot of them can't process anything more than sound bytes.

But there's always the 1 episode that kind of flies off the rails as far as a subtlety goes, even by its own standard, given their typical, somewhat plain-faced approach to satire. It's that one episode where characters act as bland representations of societal antagonists. Where every stock character representing the opposition explicitly states that they are a straight white male and that they have <insert incorrect opinion here>. It's comparable to some of the shittiest strawmen political webcomics you find online, nowadays, which is doubly ironic considering their same jabs at things like Buzzfeed. There's nothing witty or insightful about the execution. And at least in my case, it's not so much indignation at the stance they take (and I lean pretty left) so much as it is just annoyance of a very heavy handed, clumsy approach to a particular episode in an otherwise spectacular season 4. And they've done this at least once in the three previous seasons.

The asexuality thing really kind of went nowhere interesting (pretty much just hey, todd's asexual and that means something to him), but it wasn't horrible.

Man, and I do want to stress, it does annoy me that things like that, plus some of the more juvenile humor (spaghetti strainers, clown dentists) is juxtaposed awkwardly with some of the best things I've seen in television-format animation, such as the seahorse episode and season 4's penultimate episode.
>>
>>95204692
Yeah, the clown dentist thing shouldnt have happened.

Its clear they dont know what to do with Todd so they keep doing these weird out of place plots. Its supposed to be the point, but in this new season its sticks out bad.
>>
>>95204006

anon don't do this

>>95204644

They do tend to faff around. Sometimes they make a joke and I think "haha a good one liner" and turns out NO THAT'S A REAL PLOT POINT.

Which is fine. But when so much emotional stuff is happening I kinda want to see what happens next and not Todd fighting rabid clown dentists.
>>
During the scene where PB and Diane have their first bout of angry sex, did anyone think it was going to get abusive? like he was gonna hit her?

>>95204644
I mean, don't get me wrong, it was a bit much for me too, but it didn't bother me as much as it seems to bother some other people here. Like it's ruining the whole show, or something.
The straight white male joke happened once this season. It sucked, but there was only the one scene where A Ryan Seacrest Type said it.
I wanna go back and look at who wrote each episode, because that was really the only episode that fell flat for me at all. Even then, it was pretty on-point about how Hollywood handles that stuff.
>>95204727
I agree that Todd's starting to go nowhere. Everyone else has these great character arcs through the season, but Todd kind of stayed where he was at the end of season 3 - tired of Bojack's shit, but being the better man. I liked his interactions with Princess Carolyn, how he was trying to build her back up.

1) Todd is, perhaps, the only innocuous thing in the show. Let it live, buddy. Let it live.
2) Asexuality is never really explored in media, so it's going to be interesting.
2.5) Sexuality is a slippery thing. Don't think you'll understand it.
>>
>>95204644
>>95204816
Perhaps, Todd is the only source of sanity in the show. His brilliant businesses ideas rings comedy as usual, and the clowns explicitly tells us of Todd's nature- He has to be funny.
>>
>>95204847

> 2.5) Sexuality is a slippery thing. Don't think you'll understand it.

I'm not understanding what you're trying to say with this.
>>
>>95204644
I honestly don't mind the episodes most people find preachy, since they're usually used as a vehicle to highlight Diane's hypocrisy rather than just outright soapbox.
>>
They really made this a feminist, female focused season and pulled it off pretty well. Except the gun episode. If you can only make a point by creating a fictional scenario where your opponents are all idiots you probanly don't understand the issue well.
>>
>>95204889

But it's those particular episodes when she's the most vindicated. She's becomes the one who's "right" in those episodes.
And it's a shame, because Bojack is typically excellent with handling her character. From day one, I was worried she'd be generic social justice voice of reason, but they illustrate constantly, through her actions, how one particular take on these things might blind you to other interpretations of it (i.e., her handling of the aquafina abortion situation had blinded her to another way to approach female issues), or as you've said, as a means to expose certain hypocrisies in her character and certain progressive-driven ideals.
>>
>>95203831
It's really simple, they start out by pitching, "but if character did ______ there would be no show, everything is resolved positively" then they build it up until it looks like its impossible to not happen, because its so perfect. Then they find really convincing reason for it to all be destroyed and the character worse off. Its addicting.
>>
>>95204816
Oh no I called the angry sex then squirmed because I was techincally watching explict furry porn.
>>
>>95204816
The trailer to me made it look like a straight up husband on wife physical abuse and that's what I was expecting going in. Actually a teensy bit disappointed it didn't go that way, if only for the drama
>>
>>95205104
But this season ended with some hope for our main man, even though PB and Diane are now suffering

Considering I have severe mommy issues, this fucked me up.

>"Fuck you, Mom."
>>
>>95205171

I think Bojack is just really good with playing with expectations and subverting them. You expect Bojack to fuck things up further and further but this time around he gets to do something good for once. Even if it's just a small victory that could be ruined anytime it just seems like such an importanr step to Bojack. After all in this terrifying world, all we have are the connections we make.
>>
>>95203831

I just came into the thread to say, the topic of this one is precisely why I have refused to watch anymore of it after season 1. I feel like it said everything it needed to and why would you choose to depress yourself with more of it, for 2 additional seasons.
>>
>>95205202
There's something I like about "choosing" to be depressed through watching a show. I sort of connected with this season so I can't say that any time I watch it and feel an uncomfortable emotion that it's absolutely a negative thing.
>>
>>95205202

To see how the characters manage to find true happiness
Bojack is actually on a good way of doing so in this season
>>
>>95205194
I will eat my sock if hollyhock doesnt disown bojack by the end if season 5
>>
>>95205202
Because it allows you to be depressed over someth8nge else.
>>
>>95205194
Actually half the reason he actually did well is because he hardly had anything to do with the cast. He was just sorta there doing his own thing.

I really wanted to smack him for ruining the vacation home though.
>>
"thank you for holding mr horseman. I understand you're interested in our facility and wanted our first available room."
>>
>>95205269
He had to burn that bridge. There was no going back.
>>
>>95205269

That's the thing. Bojack's problem has always been that he wanted validation of everyone around him instead of just trying to find what truly makes him happy. When he found out who Honeyhook's mother was and didn't even want her to know that he went through all the trouble of doing that for her it was the first truly selfless act he ever did
>>
>>95204882
What's not to understand? Left-leaning dude who actually unironically browses imageboards has passive-agressive meltdown accompanied with le epic smug anime reaction face that's TOTALLY make fun of you. Happens on this board all the time desu
>>
>>95205235
She'll probably die in a plane crash going to visit her mom and Bojack will head off on another bender
>>
>>95207131
Wasn't the guy next to her at the airport kinda twitchy, i half expected a bomb to go off mid phone conversation honestly.
>>
>>95204816
>During the scene where PB and Diane have their first bout of angry sex, did anyone think it was going to get abusive? like he was gonna hit her?

hit her? no, he would knot.
>>
>>95205411

Why wouldn't someone bother to make a coherent point instead of snarkily dismissing someone's opinions without even making it sufficiently clear what facet of my assertions were contrary to his views?

I would've felt less confused if he just called me a cuck or /pol/tard.
>>
>>95209870
The point is you disagree with him so you must be ignorant and need to be (re)educated.

Which is doubly ironic, because I happen to be asexual myself and he claims I don't have any understanding on the topic.

> ha ha not by choice, I bet

All I'm saying is that you gotta be a lot more clear that you're trying to insult me. I deserve that much, right?
