Most of the arguments are hit and miss, but the criticism of Pearl's scene in Mr Greg makes no sense. Everything you need to know is delivered through the lyrics, the movements and Pearl's facial expressions. So what if there's no dramatic overhead shots? The audience knows it's a big moment because everything has been building to this and it's given the right amount of care and attention to detail.

Really a lot of the rant comes across as if it was written during season 4 without any context as to what's happened since. That and it deliberately leaves out examples that counter certain arguments (i.e fights don't make use of scenery when you have Bismuth, Smokey vs Jasper and Malachite vs Axelandrite) which kind of undermines a lot of genuine issues the video brings up (pacing etc.).

I doubt you watched the video considering you described it as vitriolic, which it's not, but one of the points specifically is that long standing shows tend to have something new to shake things up in S4, because a formula break keeps things interesting. It's a manga that started publication a year before SU premieres and gets compared to it a lot but. The core premise of sentient genderless gem-people fighting beings from outer space with a mix of tropes in the magical girl and sci-fi genres are shared between the two, it's a lot of the finer details and setups that make each other different. For example, in SU the Crystal Gems are on Earth constantly interacting with humans, but in Lustrous it's set in a post apocalypse where humanity has died out. Another example is how the Crystal Gems in SU are actually constructs of hard lights from the gems on their "bodies", while as in Lustrous they are 100% the actual minerals themselves, which lets them play with the concept more. There are a lot more but for the sake of spoilers I won't say more.

Gonna drop a quick shill here as well, but if anyone in this thread is interested in just a prime example of characterization and worldbuilding, check out the webnovel Worm, by Wildbow. Great creative use of superpowers where there are a scarce few that are generic, and weak ones get turned on their head because of clever use and situational occurrences that can lead to a not-necessarily strong group of villains to rule over a city out of lack of competition and sheer scariness factor that only occurs when they are a combined threat, or a very clever and seemingly unbeatable cape to be taken down through cleverness and abuse of their maybe one weakness. Its really fucking long, but there's a lot of just delicious tidbits of writing in it.
Anyone interested in creating something could get inspiration from it, be it a book comic or animation. As someone who likes it, I can say that it has a lot of flaws, but the good parts vastly overshadow the bad ones at least IMO
