The "speculation" started in the old Usenet X-Men forum in the early 1990s, born out of gay readers wanting to see at least one of the team outed as gay. They liked Colossus and Havok more than they liked Iceman, but no-one could ever argue Alex or Piotr might be gay.

Their reasoning consisted of:

1) Bobby not having had a successful, lasting relationship, something which at the time, applied to every other X-Men character except Scott and Jean.

2) A scene where Emma Frost joked about suggesting Bobby find a new career as an interior-decorator, a "stereotypically gay" job, ignoring the context that she said it because he'd covered her office in ice.

3) Bobby having dated a Japanese woman. It was claimed that it was a common thing for gay men in the closet to date a foreign woman so they could explain any gay behaviour away with "you just don't understand American culture". I have no idea if this was ever a true thing or not, but since Opal Tanaka was raised in America, it's not like this ever made sense anyway.

TL:DR: The 'reasons' anyone ever thought Bobby might be gay were a mixture of lies, insanity, and deliberately misreading scenes, but gay readers were so desperate for a gay X-Man that it just became like a self-perpetuating meme amongst fans.

Marvel is literally hell for any civilian without super powers.

He makes some of his students forget they are brother and sister. He makes them forget all sorts of things--- from trivial things to very important things. And he even does it to his prized X-Men. Prof constantly throwing around his mental dick and arranging life just how he wants it.
