These costumes never ever look good under anything but the most specific lighting, and especially when they're in motion.

I think the answer to why Braun is able to make "better" costumes is that movie and tv execs are scared of scaring off casuals who doesn't like tight spandex, hence the overuse of cg or "leather jacket" costumes.
