OP keep posting
I recently read this. Having never read cosmic Marvel, aside from a few Thanos events, what happened between this Drax and his characterization in the movies? Is it derailment or something happened to him?

A bit of both. Drax's personality has been all over the place over the years.

In What year was this comic released?
That's all for now.

Early on (prior to Infinity Gauntlet) Drax gets brain damage and becomes essentially a purple caped space Hulk for a number of years. This lasted until the mid 00's with Annihilation where he is reborn into a new body with a new design (the look he has in the films) and a fixed brain.
The current version of Drax is what the film version is based on but they took a lot of liberties with him. The original comic Drax was initially a human named Arthur who, along with his family, is attacked by Thanos after accidentally seeing him doing Thanosy things. His daughter survives and is taken in by Thanos's father Mentor and eventually becomes the character Moondragon. Drax dies but is revived by Kronos (cosmic god / Thanos's grandfather) to hunt down and kill Thanos.
The film version has a similar backstory with his family being killed and him being out for vengeance except here he is after Ronan instead of Thanos (at least initially). Drax and his family were also never human in the film version but are instead members of some tribal alien race. His personality in the films is film original though, he never behaved that way in the comics at any point.
