It's a shame they never got to the Bubble Bass arc, that was when the series really came into its own. Bass handed Spongebob his first defeat, forcing some introspection and character development. Their second fight is amazing from the start to the cheat reveal. Hopefully the new anime does it justice.

Hm, you must be using a different translation than I. And while there certainly is more to the series than pure love with it's wink wink adherence to classic shounen tropes, most people remember it for the incest. And as for Gravity no Falls, people forget that it's a mystery show first and a romantic omnibus second. The Maberu arc was just a small part of the series anyway but it was so well done and Hirsch-san got away with so much shit that it's the part that people remember.
