538 gave Trump a pretty good shot at winning, 30% iirc. Other polling sites, NOT the sites just reporting on the polls, gave him anywhere from 15-25%. The polls weren't off by some incredible number (only a point or two depending on location), and they didn't need to be for Trump to win.

The idiots that were reporting "Trump has a 1% chance of winning!!1" eg Huff Post made an incredibly stupid error interpreting the polls. They treated each separate state as a separate coin flip, but if a poll in one state is off by a point, it's pretty likely that it's also off by the same point in similar states.

You can see the history there. 30% was the final estimation, but only RIGHT before the election. 538 had him at 10-15% for the months leading up to the election. That last minute bump is probably the result of scummy polls skewing the numbers less than usual, so they didn't completely lose credibility for the following election.
