And if you picked the thief for muffling the mouth from the start, why even have them try to pick the lock? That's not their actual purpose after all.

Unless the door is a weirdly specific defense mechanism that will pop out and munch on someone who's picking the lock and then has its mouth full for five hours while Cio is actually picking the lock, and this defense mechanism cannot be disabled by some other way, that wouldn't make a lot of sense imo
