Gunn's version is similar to Englehart's, but inverted. Instead of a pissed-off jerk desperate to get to space, he's a heartbroken jerk running away from Earth. I LOVE his origin, it's one of the best origins of any comic book hero, but with the hokiness of the astrology and the aliens, and the downright unlikeable attitude (though I always identified with him as I was pissed-off orphan in my youth) of Quill, it's easy to see why they went a slightly different route in the movies. The spirit remains the same, but the character is more likeable, and his plight more touching; losing your mom to cancer is much more relatable than watching her killed by aliens, even though the ultimate goal is still to get the geeky loner kid to space.

That said, I really appreciated that Vol. 2 revealed that while his mom died from cancer, it was still because of his father, similar to how the Ariguan in the comics killed her because of his father. I really can't disagree with any of the changes Gunn made, even though I don't necessarily like them more than the origin.

That said, I stand by my assertion that the character overall is improved from his early appearances. Beyond that great origin the rest of the classic stories are rather disjointed. Vol. 2 really grew him as a character and I hope we continue to see him grow into the jaded, reluctant leader he became in Annihilation and GOTGv2.

I mean Peter Parker if he never got his spider powers was still a genius and he would have ended up in ESU doing something great, working with Reed Richards and eventually involving himself in the super hero (or villain) business.

Rider was nothing special, he was an average loser who couldn't manage more than a c+ at high school amd without the Nova accident he probably wouldn't have end up flipping burgers (which he eventually did the first time he gave them up when the corps forced him to choose between them and Earth). Hell the guy thay bullied him was a good looking athlete who had good grades.

Regarding his low self esteem, yeah every hero has it but I think they all manifest it in their own way and for Rich it was the fact that he never thinks he's good enough even when he's praised. Being Nova is all to him and the times he's lost his powers he never takes it well (the second time he loses them he tries to get them back by replicating what Night Trasher did to him knowing he could kill himself, he even writes a suicide note to his girlfriend).

We even see him dealing with coming back from a war and being upset he didn't die and when Annihilation happens he's fucked up with survivors' guilt and becomes a reckless mess.

I also saw the chatacter grow from a teen to a young adult so I'm pretty attached to him a lot.

Gunn loves the literally who weird characters no one cares about or he changes them to fit hia vision of the chatacters (See Yondu amd the character his brother plays) chances are he will have Phyla over Wendell even for the most simple of reasons because she's the Quasar he read about in DnA's Guardians run or the one who became Quasar after Wendell got owned by Annihilus.

I liked my headcanon where Wendell gets destroyed and when he tries to reconstitute himself using quantum energies he gets reincarnated into Avril.

Thanks to Kobik shenannigans, he doesn't remember much about his past life until he touches the quantum bands. Then he gets glimpses of who he or she was.
