Did making Daredevil more of a gritty crime drama then an actual superhero show help it or hinder it?
as someone who has never seen it, probably help because it's a hook that differentiates it from other iterations
It helped out for sure but made the other shows look like shit

The problem is thats what Daredevil is.
Superhero isnt a genre, its a character descriptor, and a vague one at that.
Daredevil is a crime drama with action and thriller elements, Daredevil himself is a superhero.
If you're a superhero work first, you've failed, no matter the medium. Its style with no substance.
Likewise, like Iron Fist, if you dont engage in the that mythology, if you dont embrace it, its substance without style.
Daredevil works because its substance AND style.
You need to embrace the stupidity and accept it. Dont push it away, play it straight, use it. Play to all the strengths.

He's right though, have you ever read any Daredevil comics that weren't you know, other heroes comics or team books that just happened to feature Daredevil? Daredevil is about as street level as it comes. Most street level books read much like a gritty crime dramas, with the exception of Spider-Man who's a bit more "super" than most of his street peers and reads more like a teen soap drama in either case
