I had this idea in the back of my mind that the Emoji Movie would somehow turn out to be a masterpiece. The trailers were all a facade and the actual movie would be a meta commentary on exploitation and loss of innocence or some shit like that (kind of like how Max described it). Critics and "ironic memers" would go in expecting a trainwreck and actually run out trying to tell everyone to go see it, claiming it was a masterpiece the played on everyone's expectations. It would be the first animated movie to win an Oscar for Best Motion Picture be put alongside Citizen Kane, and be hailed as one of the greatest films ever made.

I snuck in to see it and regretted it though.

I've seen a few of them and yeah they'e good, but this in this one he seemed to dial back the silliness by a few ticks. Granted there's nothing wrong with his comedy, but in this one he was like "alright let me be real with guys for second" just played it relatively straight. The part where he told the critics to actually provide constructive criticism in their reviews really drove that home.

his "style" constantly changed throughout his entire career
arguably, his best style was somewhere between Girl-Chan and Mr. Literal

he had a grand total of one animation that I'd actually call good. it was well animated, stayed on model, and it wasn't LOLSORANDOM like too many of the awesome series turned into
it was basically him giving problems he has with the game industry before he came up with sequelitis

but I'll give you that his choice of color is excellent. iirc, he apparently paints to learn how to use colors
take a look at Pikachu in Pokeawesome. he's actually a shade of fucking blue, but the way it's used makes him actually look yellow

Max's version of the movie sounds like it could actually go somewhere with competent writers.

Except it couldn't squeeze in all the tie-in references, so it'd never get made. It also goes directly against the message Sony wanted for the film, which was "Aren't our apps fucking cool? Spend your entire life on them."

No, from the beggining they now exactly what they were doing: they wanted to get quick buck from dumb kids.

It's kind of endemic of current 'pop culture' movies nowadays to miss the point and just try to show us all how gosh darn cool that merchandise is. Like with the Lorax, how the message of the actual story is pretty much watered down and buried in lieu of merchandise and Buy A Mazda. Because damn, Jim Writer, who the fuck is gonna buy our shit if you make them feel BAD about being a tech whore or a mindless consumer?

It's basically pussy tactics from the studios. They are deadly afraid of making the audience feel bad about themselves, because then the audience might not buy more shit.

Commercial products are as old as fucking Hollywood. There's no reason why Space Jam gets a free pass but Emoji Movie is seen as heartless cash grab.

Literally any concept can be good, just not every concept can be made into a movie. Just like how not every concept can be turned into a 500-page novel.

Emoji Movie would have been fine if they were simple 2D shorts that were like, one or two minutes long and had some basic wordplay and slapstick.
>>
>>94767049

>>
>>94767289
I'm well aware of that but at the same time a reviewer who can't actually use their brain to come up with some constructive criticism isn't a good reviewer, this movie is a no effort shit show but if no one made the effort to suggest ways to improve things nothing good would ever happen in the first place.

>the idea of putting down your phone and talking to someone is a novel and amazing concept
>putting down the phone used to communicate with people no matter where they are

this is the kind of thing old people say because the kids around them would rather spend their time on the phone than talk to them. It's not the kids fault, or the phone's fault, it's that old person's fault for being so shit that the kids would blatantly ignore them for shitty time wasting games, or talk to strangers on the internet or their friends from school.

what a concept. kids don't want to talk to old out of touch people and old out of touch people reject and condemn the new things kids are into.

Egoraptor has tons of cash and will never have to move back in with his mom and dad. Look at so many of the old Newgrounds people, they're either outright broke or barely surviving. Arin made the right choice.
>>
>>94769419
Arin is makes like 80K from his Youtube earnings which trickles down to 50K after YT takes out their share of his earnings and you subtract taxes.
Thats about as much as I make a year.
>>
>>94769469
Is that number of cash from just Game Grumps or all of the multiple channels they have combined? It seems small.

But along with Youtube money they also has people buying Starbomb and supporting their other projects like daddy dating. With an office like this I think they have more income compared to your calculations: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4BJRr3zzHA

And while I'm happy you make a nice amount of money I wasn't talking about you so I'm confused on why you brought it up. I was talking about the Newgrounds old guard. Most have broken dreams along with being broken financially. Arin avoided that fate, he made the right choice.

>The most talented
He's very good, his animation is super clean, and he's pretty good with CGI, but I feel like other guys (SpeedoSausage, Harry Partridge) give him a run for his money. And I mean a real good run for his money. But you make a good point, he was the last of his kind, a truly independent animator who regularly posted on YouTube and chose to stay in said format, and for that he payed dearly. Everybody from Newgrounds left the YouTube scene, Psychicpebbles is working on a show, same with Oney apparently, many Animators have left Youtube for small independent studios, like Ross who now works for Arin's studio, or some of the NG animators who have come together to form Studio Yotta, meanwhile Spazkid and Jeff are working on a game for Tom Fulp, and Kirpbopher is a voice actor, and hopefully no longer a cunt. Max didn't do any of this, he chose to stay on YT, its what made him special in way, and a part of me wants to keep playing the system and win. Speaking of Newgrounds I'm actually surprised how good of a shape the site is in now, compared to YouTube that is.

Sony (and whoever owns Emojis/Candy Crush/Whatever else apps) thought/hoped kids/pre-teens were stupid enough to watch this (and their parents to be apathetic enough to take them to this) Destructive reviews get more views/subs than constructive reviews (or "good" reviews) His idea for a Emoji is cute but boring and it contradicts what the people who would bankroll an Emoji movie want kids to do

>his idea for a better one is shit.

This. Not only it's preachy as fuck and born out of his personal bitterness, it doesn't even make sense: why would the emojis actively try to push the kid, their "god", AWAY from them? Even Toy Story knew that, if you're a kid's toy, you'd like to be one as long as you can, even if it's not good for the kid.

This was just the bile of an envious guy in his 20s who feels like in his 60s because younger people find him boring.

In my country that's quite normal since the economy is terrible and its better to save money and share a room with your folks.

Because their houses are cheap as fuck, moslty because they're made of cheap material (they make hole in walls with just a punch).
Also they have welfare.
With those conditions it's understandable why, if they make fun of people outside their country it's just idiotic and ignorant though.

I agree with everything in this video except for his rant about people not having a right to criticize the film if they couldn't make a better one. Like, no, just because I'm not a talented filmmaker doesn't mean I can't recognize when a film blows complete ass and share my opinion. It's like when people say that a sports player is bad and the response is something like "Yeah, well I doubt you could do better." Like, fuck, I can still tell that they blow at football or something even if I don't play myself.

>Well hey if its going back to its roots of being an edgelord Flash community
That MIGHT actually happen, when you consider what a shitshow YouTube is, here's my prediction for the future: YouTube will become the ultimate normie site, a video-version of Facebook, where moms watch stupid family-friendly videos while junior watches mindless filler/'entertainment", mainly Spiderman and Elsa videos, meanwhile the older normie kids will watch some faggot muslim kids prank (harass) people. YouTube has been going after LetsPlayers and political video producers. Not to attack those guys, but lets face it, those videos are not hard to produce, they can be made quickly and garner a lot of views, and now YT is driving them away, probably to Twitch or VidMe. Meanwhile the animators might migrate back to Newgrounds, because aside from NG the internet doesn't really cater to animation. You know what Tom Fulp should do? Create an several app versions of NG. Most people use phones when surfing the web anyway. Why not do a SFW APP for minors where they can watch funny SFW cartoons or play games, as well as a NSFW version for older folks. Maybe try going on an ad campaign to promote NG as a site for and by Animators, there are many kids out there who want to share their ideas with the world, they just don't know how to, and many of the young ones have never heard of NG

Oh, I thought that was meant to be a parody/homage/whatchumacallit to the Graham short.

That being said, both are based off of rather universal tropes. I'm not sure I'd call this a direct rip off.
Now Hallo Bimmelbah/Gotta Go Hoe/Barbara Streisand is a ripoff. This feels more like a cabin in the woods (literally) kind of deal where there's multiple pieces doing something similar, but it's less about copying the other, and more about doing your own thing with a basic concept.
>>
>>94781311
>Hallo Bimmelbah/Gotta Go Hoe/Barbara Streisand
The typing is not strong with me today.
I mean Hallo Bimmelbahn and Gotta Go Home there.
There are 3 songs that are basically a conga line of reusing the same catchy tune, to the point where literally the only thing anyone likes about the song "Barbara Streisand", is the musical riff that some german band no one heard of came up with decades ago.
Might as well link:

I wouldn't have minded it if he had just credited Graham's work in the credits/description while not using the video for ad revenue. Plus he seemingly avoids discussing the topic like the plague because I've yet to see anyone get any word out of him concerning the topic which only makes him look more suspicious IMO.

He's said in the past that he's a fan of Graham so I'd say that's a pretty heavy indicator that he made the video with him in mind. It's a common trope but he pretty much went by the exact same plot points/execution for the story. Literally just replace the furries with gnomes and the sandwich with a fish and it's the same thing.

>>94781346
You're fine my dood. Just creatively I can't respect what he did, seemed scummy IMO.

>I'm also a big Graham fanboy so that's a contributor to my extreme bias.
>>
>>94781311
that's hardly an excuse
hell, the thing seems like a beat-for-beat remake of it
>>
>>94781397
>>94781407
Honestly, the reason why I don't mind it, is probably to do with the fact that it's animated.
I mean when it comes to beat for beat remakes, I generally hate them, its one of the things I don't like about The Force Awakens too, but this is basically months of his life he put into creating a brand new animation around an extremely simple story concept.

When you consider what it takes to come up with the idea of "Guy goes into forest with his dog. Hangs out. Starts feeling creepy. Dog goes missing. There's strange, dangerous people out to get him." with what it takes to animate all of this as basically just one guy?
In that light, even if it was meant to be a straight up copy I wouldn't mind it.
This might be because I grew up in the golden age of Newgrounds, where the flavour of the decade was experimenting with animation by re-creating other people's work with your own style and twists, but it doesn't feel like it stole anything of exceptional value.

It's kind of a staple in media, if I think about it. Most musicals were so much alike back in the day that Danny Kaye had a whole musical number about it in Up in Arms.
We have the entire genre of Slasher Horror built on copying previous movies but with new twists or set pieces.
>>
>>94781550
Shame he didn't put the same amount of effort into the writing itself. You can't refute the argument that he ripped it off by saying "It's a well known story."

I'm not too big of an animation geek unless it's Akira level so I can't really sympathize with you on that. I'm more of a creative snob so I notice narrative bits & pieces much more.

That's not how it works. We are harsh because we are a board with no identifies thus it's really easy to say a harsh opinion because we are completely detached from it, thus it's easy to say our peace even if it hurts others.
Also come on, the dude is just parroting whatever one else thinks and just jumps on a platform of "I could do it better" with such a lazy set up that it just reeks of hating modern technology rather than finding a healthy balance between the two. Shit he has said what has been said about games, TV, comics, radio and the fucking newspaper. Hell we got literature from the 1700s thinking that fictional books were going to destroy our way of life and we weren't looking at what was all around us but burying our face in a book. That sounds ignorant as fuck now, so will this shit about smart phones, but the OP video is just another fool that thinks it's the technology that's the issue when the bigger problem is what we are destroying socially and emotionally in the first world and smart phones have shit to do with that.

Yeah that's the point. It's THEIR fucking house. If you pay for half the rent and bills then maybe you have a point and should be treated equally when it comes to the rules.

>forced to do chores and errands for them like mowing the lawn and washing dishes
Yeah you LIVE there. Meaning you cause more dishes and you yourself have a responsibility towards the quality of the residence. Just as much as they do.

>zero privacy
I can see where your pathetic opinions come from if your parents are unwilling to give you proper respect to privacy.

>if your mom is a lousy housewife then you have to make your own food most of the time
Christ you are a goddamn whiner. Make your own damn food.

>implying any of that great
Yeah it is pretty nice to have loving parents willing to help you out, even decades after you became a legal adult and it is also nice to have proper moral and emotional support when shit gets rough. If your parents provide you a healthy and welcoming environment in their home beyond the age of 22 then you have some damn good fucking parents, or at least some pretty nice people as parents.

I never felt like commenting how to improve it because it felt like the movie version of clickbait from the start. With clickbait, whether you love it, hate it, or see it at all you give them power. The only way I could take a bit of power away from them was never engaging.

The rest of the movie audience also seemed to get the hint about this. It was never a movie made to be good, you get that feeling it was just made for the name.

I actually thought the movie was okay and even some saw some redeeming aspects in it, mainly in some of the visuals. I liked the internet trolls and the killer robots, and a lot of the settings. There was also some great cartoony animation, mainly on High-Five. I'm surprised Max didn't comment on any of that, since he's a cartoonist who actually works in visual mediums.
