Most of them. Animators stick to things proven by Harry Potter, Marvel Thor, or Clash Of The Titans.

Even Japan just uses the same ones of theirs over and over. They had Miyazaki to make obscure ones cool and they still don't bother.

Maybe someone here can help me.

Does anyone remember an illustrated adventure book that took place on a spooky, haunted island? Turned out to be an amusement park by the end?

Each page was a full illustrated map of some level of the park. There was a crazy amount of detail - kitchens with cooks digging boogers from a gigantic nose, a haunted maze with sentient lawnmowers, demon summoning chambers and whatnot.

Anyone remember?

I wouldn't say Sphinxes are underutilized in comics and cartoons, they always pop up guarding some door or passage to tell a riddle and then never be seen again, but they are absent in anime, manga and porn about monster girls. Which is a shame. They are by far the superior monster girls.

As a Swede the "Näcken" was always an interesting creature. Just a normal looking naked man with algae or something in his hair, hanging out in a river or stream playing a modern looking violin which attracts people (maybe just children?) into the water where the Näcken drowns them. Guess they're in line with other Siren like beings.

This is the only /co/ thing I've seen where they are not just referenced but are center stage:

>lots of cultural myths were just local crazies that nobody could figure out
>>
>>94769113
Why are so many mythological creatures into drownin folk?
>>
>>94769253
Probably because people drown for seemingly no reason all the time and the stories are there to give reasons
>>
>>94769273
And here I thought it was because mythological creatures are bigger assholes than siblings playing too rough at the public pool.
>>
>>94769253
Number of reasons. To explain drownings. To promote caution when in places where drowning could be likely, if you're worried a turtle demon is going to give you a soul stealing rimjob you're definitely going to be on edge. Drowning was a common cause of death and really just it's a horrifying way to go, so it would be understandable it has a prominent place in human imagination leading to these myths.
>>
>>94769253
Another reason could be that people don't want their kids to play by the deadly river, so they tell the kids a Swedish man will drown them if they get too close.
>>
>>94769253
To be fair Kelpies don't drown you, they just drag you into the water and eat you then your liver washes up on the shore later.

>>
>>94771744
Doesn't seem likely. Serial killers operate in secrecy, over the course of years, and they're creepy little shut-ins not people that stand out. And if they did get caught in the act of murder there wouldn't be anything to link them to previous murders.

I do like the idea of rabies victims though, because then you've got similar traits. Photophobia. Animalistic qualities like snarling and drooling. Blood lust and so on.

>>
>>94774696
>>94771744
Saying it's any one thing is probably simplistic.
Not just serial killers but Berserkers, ignorance on the postmortem body functions, just plain mistrusting that creep you think you see at night, creepy ongoings you can't explain, also just in general mythology evolving on its own.

Though Succubus/Incubus totally sounds like a bad cover up for cheating on your spouse and then your mistress has a kid that is unmistakably yours.
"You see....I was raped....by a demon, and she took my seed. Then she turned into a dude and went down the street, and raped her too."
>>94774392
Because they werk, why try to figure out different dynamics and risk having them be called Elf/Orc/Dwarf rip offs when you can just turn your brain off.
>>
>>94774696
I think the theory was that it was the "blathering psychotic"-type serial killers like Richard Chase that were the inspiration. Something about how Bundy-style organized, sadistic killers were mainly an upperclass thing (Gilles de Rais, Elizabeth Bathory) while "commoner" serial killers were either always glorified bandits or the psychotic kind who rip people to shreds, eat them, etc. and basically act like animals.

>>
>>94775624
Problem with that is they're almost all shapeshifters.

They might have just a basic animal form like a raven, and can turn into different shit, but it's usually just other animals.

I know this one local story an Indian who came to our school told us. There was this evil witch, and I guess in appearance she was your standard old hag, would steal children from the village to kill them and drink their blood. The village mourned and suffered and one day when a passing magic hero passed by they begged for his help. He turned himself into a child and played near the village until one day the old woman scooped him up in her sack and carried him off. I think the sack may have been filled with some of the earlier children that were still alive, can't remember the details. Anyway, when it was time for her to open her sack, the hero popped out, resuming heroic form, picked up the old witch, and threw her onto the cooking fire she had built. She burst into flame, popping and smoking like when you throw fresh evergreen branches onto a fire. All the tiny little embers floated up into the air and where they cooled and turned into little black mosquitos. And to this day mosquitos still fly around in the woods, drinking blood.

holy shit that's awesome. And HBO too. I'm probably hoping too much for it to have the same kind of skill and effort put into it as Westworld and Game of Thrones, but that still sounds great.

What I've always wanted though is to see someone do to African myth and folklore what most of the generic fantasy genre does to European myth and folklore. I want an African middle earth fantasy setting.

It would be a fresh take on fantasy at the least.

I'm always fond of the Nuckelavee.

To sum it up, it's like a centaur, but with a horse head still at the front, only the horse head has one eye, it's breath can wilt crops and poison livestock, and the whole thing has no fucking skin. It's only weakness if fresh water, so either hope for rain or carry a super soaker until you find a stream.

Had to do a ghost story project for high school history class, learned about and absolutely adore La Llorona from Mexico. The story goes that a woman's children drown (sometimes murdering them, sometimes of malicious neglect, sometimes because she was away working to take care of them) and she goes crazy, cries her eyes out and stops eating until she eventually dies of starvation. At the gates of Heaven, she is not allowed in until she finds them. Comes back as a gaunt, eyeless ghost that hangs around bodies of water and drowns people of Mexican origin because she thinks they are her children.

Not the same, but there is a scifi series where the characters keep finding themselves in alternate timelines where different groups conquered the world and achieved space flight. First they end up in one where the roman empire never fell and instead went to space, then they end up in one where the aztecs conquered the world and went to space.

The first book is just about people being forced to colonize a planet against their will, but the second has the reality hopping. The books are called Proxima and Ultima.

This comic made good use of some more obscure mythical creatures. I was surprised they had the momo, even though the design for the monster was terrible and didn't fit at all.

The momo is supposed to be like the red hairy monster from loony toons, except with darker hair. A weird hairy bigfoot. Not a giant sloth with claws and teeth like that.

I'm surprised that there are two webcomics that are well known and take place in Missouri. Nothing ever takes place here. But then you have this mild furry comic in southern MO and Lackadaisy Cats in St. Louis.

Inuits actually have a lot of pretty great mythological creatures and a lot have kinda interesting likely real life causes like the shadow people that can make travelers become lost and were believed to be seen most often around areas where we now understand toxic gases escape from beneath the ice. Some cool magic stuff too revolving around secrecy and taboos.

A cool one is the Thunderbird or wakinyan tanka and the Great Unktehe

In Sioux legends of the creation of the world when humans were young the serpent-like Great Unktehe grew to despise humans. Having power over the rain and water the Unktehe and her children began a great rainstorm that never ceased in order to flood the land and drown every last human.

The thunderbirds took pity on the humans and moved them up to the tallest peaks where the thunderbird lived, then asked Tunkashila (the greatest of gods, name means "Grandfather" in Sioux I think) to give them strength.

Then they went to war against the unktehe and for many years lightening and water fought for domination. Eventually the last unktehe were slaughtered until there were no more and the thunderbird gained the power to make it rain, meaning that they had power over all storms.

There are variations on this myth like indians and cowboys getting lost among the cliffs of the Badlands of the Dakotas in thunderstorms and stumbling across huge serpentine skeletons.

Another variation on the unktehe myth involves two brothers who visited a witch to ask her to grant them power to slay the Great Unktehe who was terrorizing their tribe by demanding human sacrifices. One brother was blind so when the witch (who was an old crone) demanded that one of them fuck her in exchange for help the brother who could see told his blind brother to do it. Then the witch gave them power and they slew the Great Unktehe and took its heart. After this the witch revealed she could turn into a hot teenager and restored sight to the blind brother and gave both brothers the ability to hunt anything. Also she became the blind brother's wife so he got to pound her now pristine pussy every night. His brother was understandably butthurt about this.

thing is, jews were originally a politheistic culture, with human-like gods, like almost all other politheistic cultures have, then they shifted to a monotheism, incorporating th attributes of multiple gods into a single one and then this god's nature changed. Thus a lot of contradictions and inconsistencies

Näcken pulls in women, men and children. Though IIRC for the men it's mainly when they approach him about learning to play the violin. He can also drive them mad that way.

I'd also argue that you could get some decent mileage out of other folkloric beings, like various rås, wights/small people, trolls and lantern men.
>>
>>94807187
I mean to be fair they don't have to be that human like to impregnate a human, even religions with humanoid gods still would get fairly abstract from time to time. Several myths involve impregnating women as animals, inamimate objects, or astral projections that fuck them in their dreams. Also weird shit like having two fathers.
>>
>>94807374
yeah but when the myths about god making man in his image and "nephilim" impregnating women first appeared they were about human looking gods.

Finnish folklore is pretty cool.

Metsänpeitto (lit. Forests Cover) is a phenomenon found in Finnish folklore. It was used to describe people or domestic animals who went missing in nature for unexplained reasons.
People "covered by forest" were described as not being able to recognize the terrain around them, even if they were on familiar grounds. In other cases they might have walked endlessly through unfamiliar terrain, or were rendered completely paralyzed, unable to move or speak. Unnatural silence devoid of the sounds of nature was also common.
People or animals under the influence of the phenomenon were described as becoming either completely invisible to other people, or looking like part of the nature around them, like a rock.

This is our whole fucking problem. St. Louis is far and away our most important cultural and economic center but it might as well be on the fucking moon in relation to the rest of the state. And the relationship gets more and more fucked up every day.

Heck, you've got the corrupt assholes in Jeff City actively colluding in St. Louis' degradation by barring the introduction of even the most minor gun control reform because it might inconvenience Cletus and Bubba Joe from the bootheel. Our leaders are more or less okay with allowing the only city that elevates us beyond total provincialism to turn into the goddamn wild west.

This isn't even going into the effect that feral fucking hellhole across the river in Illinois has on St. Louis. St. Louis used to be one of the greatest cities in the country and now it's like it's besieged by enemies on all sides.

The whole state's on the fast track to hell. Never thought I'd miss goddamn Mel Carnahan.

It was one of the greatest cities because it was a stop for all transport across the country. Wagons, trains, cars, they all went through St. Louis. Now it's cut off and alone in the epitome of flyover states. That sad "international airport" that just reroutes everything to Chicago, there to remind everyone that the thing that made the place special isn't coming back.

But because the rest of the state holds us back as a cultural deadend, we can't have anything.

St. Louis passed a bill to raise minimum wage in the city. Because while you can live comfortably off of 5.50 an hour in Joplin you it's hard to just get by at $10/hr in the city. They set it to raise slow, though some bigger business decided not to bother and raised their starting wages to $10 right away.

But oh no. We can't have anything good. So the state passes a law keeping cities from raising minimum wage independent of the state, then of course they don't intend to raise it for the whole state. Because the rest of the state is just fine without it.

I had an apartment in Kirksville for $300 a month and could barely keep rent with minimum wage. I now make $13.50/hr in St. Louis but the best I can do on just that is a studio unless I want to drive two hours into town through traffic just to get to work.

If the state weren't holding this city back it could easily find a way of being something again, but you're right, they only want to cater to bubba joe in the bootheel who's running a meth lab behind his trailer.

A personal favorite monster of mine is Smok Wawelski, a polish dragon.

Pretty standard as far as dragons though with fire breath and all that, although in most depictions it's usually a huge lizard bear with floppy ears or a huge lizard that walks on 2 legs with 7 heads. Also died by drinking itself to bursting.

>Description unclear, but is described with several epithets: partalainen (the one who lives on the brink, or alternatively, the bearded one), Tuonen härkä (the ox of Tuoni, Death), tuhatpää (thousand-headed), tuhatsarvi (thousand-horned)
>The finnish national epic descripes as he rose from the seas, commanded by the northern witch Louhi to get the magical sampo back:

Wainamoinen, ancient minstrel,
Casts his eyes upon the waters
Near the broad rim of his war-ship;
There perceives an ocean-wonder
With his head above the sea-foam.

>Wainamoinen, brave and mighty,
Seizes quick the water-monster,
Lifts him by his ears and questions:
"Iku-Turso, son of Old-age,
Why art rising from the blue-sea?
Wherefore dost thou leave thy castle,
Show thyself to mighty heroes,
To the heroes of Wainola?"

>Iku-Turso, son of Old-age,
Ocean monster, manifested
Neither pleasure, nor displeasure,
Was not in the least affrighted,
Did not give the hero answer.

>Whereupon the ancient minstrel,
Asked the second time the monster,
Urgently inquired a third time:
"Iku-Turso, son of Old-age,
Why art rising from the waters,
Wherefore dost thou leave the blue-sea?
Iku-Turso gave this answer:
For this cause I left my castle
Underneath the rolling billows:
Came I here with the intention
To destroy the Kalew-heroes,
And return the magic Sampo
To the people of Pohyola.
If thou wilt restore my freedom,
Spare my life, from pain and sorrow,
I will quick retrace my journey,
Nevermore to show my visage
To the people of Wainola,
Never while the moonlight glimmers
On the hills of Kalevala!"

>Then the singer, Wainamoinen,
Freed the monster, Iku-Turso,
Sent him to his deep sea-castles,
Spake these words to him departing:
"Iku-Turso, son of Old-age,
Nevermore arise from ocean,
Nevermore let Northland-heroes
See thy face above the waters I
Nevermore has Iku-Turso
Risen to the ocean-level;
Never since have Northland sailors
Seen the head of this sea-monster.

Lady Midday/Poludnica

It's either a ghost or an undead that appears in the middle of a scorching hot sunny day, from a shaky thin air, to kill someone who crosses a big field of wheat, or some other open space without shade/breeze or water.
