Sony (Amy Pascal to be exact) didn't think the character had enough brand recognition with modern audiences. Which is why we have about cell phone icons and a Ghostbusters and Spiderman reboot.

I'm not gonna say she's right (because the hell with her) but remember Spielberg's Tintin didn't do too good either. You and I may have grown up with the character about today's children haven't with the same degree and the overseas Asia market sure as hell have not.
