Moana was lame because she was just a copy pasted character that Disney has been rehashing for a while now with (Rapunzel, Anna and a little bit of Judy) with character developments copied to an exact formula (optimistic naive girls meets cynical snarky man with sad backstory who they befriend and teach to lighten up).

That said, as great Maui is his character only really works when there's someone else to bounce of his fun personality.

Infinity is big, man. Like, there's no limit to infinity. I just rewatched the Incredibles because of a recent /co/ thread and it's not really likely this film could've been better than that whatever changes were made. So since I can put a limit to it, infinitely better is unlikely.
Face it guys, big-budget Disney films are kinda losing their grip. At least Zootopia was good.

The movie was just structured really badly. We have a montage of Moana first trying to sail, then of her getting to Maoi, then a useless Coconut fight, then of her learning to sail, then a useless crab song, then ANOTHER montage of learning to use the hook, then they get to the lava goddess, fail, and then immediately overcome it. A lot of those scenes serve no narrative purpose and just waste time.

It's stupid that two short scenes are wasted on Maoi getting and then learning to use his hook; there was no need for him to not be able to use it except for Moana to serve a purpose.

From the trailers it seemed the movie will be about a big road adventure with moana and maui but instead it took too long for her to leave thee island and barely anything happened until the resolution.

Its a fun song but the scene serves no real narrative purpose other than exposition dumping Maui's backstory, and the character is irrelevant to the plot at large.

If he appeared earlier in the movie or had more of a role, it would be fine. Perhaps they could have mentioned Maui's relationship with him earlier- it seemed like they'd once been friends but Tamatoa now has a huge grudge against him, so the scene could have played up the idea of Maui's selfishness hurting other people and or something.

You know, you made me recognize something. The story is told in a way that an old myth would be. Nothing happens immediately but everything happens to ensure the ending karmically. The problem is that telling a myth story is best done focusing on the grandness and humanity of it, and not dragging out the beat for beat. If you had told me the story of Moana over about, fifteen minutes as a big storytelling performance, I'd have loved it. But after almost 2 hours and those forgettable songs?
