Why are there so many depressing cartoons these days? When did everything go so wrong with modern culture that a fairly good chunk of the populace had to deal with suicidal tendancies and projects it onto cartoons?

There's still a lot of happy/hopeful cartoons, only adult orientated cartoons are more depressive.

Modern cartoons are increasingly made by arrested development young adults channeling their existential dread that life isn't like the stories they were told when they were younger. There are no good guys or bad guys and you're only so much in control of your own destiny and in the grand scheme of things you life is meaningless and people will forget you ever existed

Every day the news media, desperate for something to talk about, brings terrible news from around the globe and shoves it in your face 24/7 for decades upon decades.

Frequently they are also without families which leads to a crushing sense of loneliness and isolation and a sucking empty void that they attempt to plug with meaningless relationships and petty distractions.

Reminder that this was golden era Spongebob, not recent Spongebob.

>for years people complain that not enough mature animation exists because companies cater to children
>complain that no one takes animation seriously because "cartoons are for kids"
>they start doing serious drama cartoons instead of straight comedies for a change
>"Why are there so many depressing cartoons these days?"
Lesse here. Got Bojack, R&M(I think? Haven't watched, not interested), F is for Family, Morel Orel, and ...? Morel Orel isn't really that recent either. Can anyone point out any other recent depressing cartoons?

No, they don't, what they do instead is insert hamfisted "sad" moments in an otherwise comedic show so people can point at them and go "see this isn't just wacky shenanigans it's deep and serious too". Especially the first two you mentioned.
The only cartoon you mentioned that comes even close to actually being a drama is Morel Orel

Because being cynical is cool now. Have you not seen all the webcomics that are being made now?
