I saw it as him being used to a status quo and now that it was changing it was making him feel kinda shitty, it just so happened it was also in the higher up on the scale in the start before the change. Plus it was also seeming like a "dude i've been in a rut for 6 years while my friend that's done less than me my entire life is just jump starting where I've failed".

It's clear he didn't keep him around JUST to feel better about himself, they've had too many nice moments together and I can't see that just being an underlying thing.

Even if it was "just a rut", all Rigby was doing was graduating high school. The bare fucking minimum one can do to reach civil responsibility. (And honestly someone like Eileen shouldn't have ended up with Rigby, she can do way better than some dumpy manlet)

I dunno man, I understand wanting to give the benefit of the doubt but this show and it's characters burned me one too many times and seeing this just reminded me how miffed I felt at this and the movie's reveal. If I were either of them, I'd dump the other after hearing that shit in a heartbeat.

That's my point, he realized he was a major fuck up and seeing Rigby just coast by in recent seasons made it hit harder that he's the Rigby and Rigby's the Mordecai. It was something that was messed up and he realized it, but it was a newer feeling of confliction rather than the reason he kept him around. It had nothing to do with why they were friends, just "I was me and you were you, and that was our thing", it was just him being upset with change and the fact he hasn't been changing in 6 years even with ample opportunity to do so.

Also yea most people agree him graduating high school wasn't him bettering himself or maturing but that seems to be what they attempted since in-show it's treated as a big deal for him. Had he used his knowledge outside of the episodes he learned it in, it might've made a bigger mark. Instead he just said "I'm a high school graduate" in 3 S8 episodes.

Though I guess he was slightly more mature than in the earlier seasons, but that was before he went to school again. He stopped irrationally screaming and bitching and moaning in every episode. Most notably was the crappy Eileen episodes where he was all sweet and shit.

I see how what he said makes you think it was a Square 1 basis that he was using Rigby as an example of being shitty and that he isn't, because he said "I always liked that I was doing better than you", but in the scene itself it came off as more "huh, now that i think about it I realize that might be a thing" but the entire Mordecai plot was that he wasn't doing anything with his life and Rigby suddenly was.

That's the point of "I'm graduating and holding on to a steady girlfriend" at the start, the line was kinda forced so it's clear it was an entry to Mordecai's rut view.

No merchandise and what did went on clearance after it was released, a game that tanked, no home media releases, no reruns, no web promotion, and the episode premieres weren't pulling in decent numbers since the switchup.

Thomas was just an intern joke, he wasn't supposed to do much from the beginning and that was the joke. Then someone said "what if he was a spy" a few seasons in and everyone ran with it and made it a special.

Pops was always from Lolliland, at least when he was made. JG apparently said at the finale screening that they weren't sure how to hint at his endgame but that they had it in mind.

It was retarded though that his dad made a tape saying his origins, cast it out light years away, and had him treasure hunt for it while the universe was in danger.

Pops was never confirmed an alien until S8. We understood he originated from the short, but as far as the audience knew Pops from RS was a different character than Pops from that short. Either that, or the bits that were meant to foreshadow either didn't exist or were poorly implemented. (Like what was the point of Malleard and his wife looking like that then if they weren't even his biological parents?)

Everything about S8 was a waste of time other than the last couple episodes with the trainer.

I think at the start Maellard was his dad, but JG developed the Lolliland endgame at some point after the first seasons to where Maellard is just an old wrinkly man.

I read a fuck ton of posts years ago that everyone thought he was supposed to be a "man on the moon" thing.

There's more issues with Pops' story though, because the family doctor in the brain freeze and catching the wave episodes is a pure lolliland type character. If they made some retcon for him that'd at least be acceptable. Maellard's appearance can be ignored through "old man style" though his head is quite large, and it's clear he was biological initially. I can accept that he's different enough that the retcon isn't that blaring, but there are other bad things they fucked up with it.
