Does Sesame Workshop own the characters of Sesame Street like an intellectual property?
It would be my assumption that, since it is publicly funded, the characters would belong to every American citizen. Meaning there theoretically should be no legal fallout from an independently released R-rated Sesame Street movie featuring exact replicas of the real puppets and accurate impressions of the voices. That film ought to be able to be created by any American and that person ought to be able to release it for profit.

A lot of things were publically funded but that doesn't mean the property rights belong to the government/the American peopleI actually just watched the episode of West Wing where this is explained

to add to this, Sesame Street hasn't been funded by the government since 1981
