From the way the Coachman treated the donkeys that could still talk, it would seem that whatever the fucking hell magic he was using would *eventually* cause identity death/completely change them since he literally threw that poor little bastard into a pile of still sentient talking donkeys with the intent to wait for the magic to take full effect.

Unless the spell only affects you by how much of an ass you make yourself. Pinocchio might have just spent the entire time innocently playing pool and nursing one cigar and one pint. That's nothing. Shit, I've been to churches that had a pool table in the basement. Whereas Lampwick, and those other kids who were literally destroying property and guzzling booze and stealing cigars, were pretty thoroughly indulging themselves and even though Lampwick begged for help, he did not last long before he completely regressed into an animal.

Maybe all those talking donkeys are just the kids whose idea of a good time was not indulging in gallons of booze or they were the handful that had a reasonable fill and tried to leave, but the spell still got them, but not fully.
