Now, an animated show about everyone's life on the surface, that would have a lot of potential. But the key thing is everyone. Do not make it Frisk-centered or Sans-centered. The perfect thing would be occasionally giving spotlight to everyone, including Frisk, Main 6, Mettaton'n ghosts and secondaries like Muffet and Monster Kid. Maybe some rare glimpses at what's Flowey's life like back there below.

Hell, the show could work as a comedy with muh drama thrown in so it wouldn't even be that risky of a format. This idea is so obvious it'll be a miracle if it never at least attempts to happen in any way, shape or form.

I genuinely don't think it could be done. Or not well at any rate. When the consumer is a passive observer rather than an active participant, the concepts of EXP, LV, SAVEing, and DETERMINATION don't really come across at all.

That said, I would really enjoy seeing an animated rendition of the Asriel fight set to Hopes and Dreams/SAVE the World. Bet you could make that look baller as fuck.

The biggest thing that I'd have to change is that I would change the gimmick from "retro video game" to "retro film". The plot of undertale only works as a video game and it's built very much into the DNA so you'd have to find a way to change that into an analog.

Maybe have it so that every fight sorta has it's own cinematic style. Maybe make it so that when Flowey takes over it acts as if the film burned through and (or like a DVD skipped and went back to the main menu) before revealing his photoshop form in a intense horror movie like fashion.

Maybe have "DETERMINATION" shown as an ability to rewind through the film. Maybe have Flowey point out that the viewer is just doing this for entertainment rather than out of a desire to be good.

It could work but you'd have to be VERY wise about how much time you spend on each section and what characters make it in and what characters don't.

God, even though I'd make it a mini-series, the time-travelling clusterfuck of a story will relieve all sense of tension and consequences for Frisk, unless the audience considers "remembering your sins" a viable punishment.

Repeating timelines is out of the question, that'd get boring fast.

I'd probably animate one of the post-neutral endings since those are interesting enough by themselves and are barely fleshed out besides a long-winded phone call, leaving enough room for artistic freedom.

The way I see it, Undertale is made up of two halves, worldbuilding with wacky characters and stuff, and meta stuff. It is meant to be a RPG game about RPG games, which is where the LOVE and determination stuff comes from. But in order to get to that meta RPG you first need to make an RPG setting, complete with worldbuilding and characters. I doubt any media other than another game can do Undertale as a whole justice because the meta half relies on it being a game, but if you just focus on the worldbuilding half of it I think you could make something good.

Undertale was kind of clever about how it showed self-awareness because it did it through predicting what the player would do and subverting it through mechanics or just plain clever writing, like when the big ox guy (forget his name) destroyed the peace menu option with his weapon or that bit where Flowey BTFO people that watch lets players, or locking you out of the perfect ending if you purposely got the bad ending first.

You can't really do what Undertale did in a TV show because animation doesn't have coding and assets that can change up how you experience that world depending on how you play.

It'd work much the same way as the Higarashi anime adaptation. After the "series" ends, it starts back over from the beginning, which the characters having little to no memory of the previous timeline, but it still subtly changes their actions in this new timeline. I'd make it like Samurai Jack, focusing on visuals and long silent scenes like the game did as well in key places, and keeping the protagonist only mostly silent.

It would be the same story but drawn out more. Characters will be introduced and then come and go. There would be a few arcs for specific parts of the series.

If instead this were the game being made as a cartoon originally I would make it cut between two timelines so it seemed like there were two kids stuck underground, until a big reveal at the end of the first season like Westworld did.

The show would go on for 3 seasons and wrap up with the same ending the game had for the good route.

I'd probably just rip-off Over the Garden Wall, at least in format. Keep it exactly as long as it needs to be to tell its story, maybe a 12 episode miniseries. Keep that same unsettling tone- the feeling that though it has the appearance and trappings of your typical "kid on an adventure" program, there's something deeply wrong going on just below the surface, and that the protagonist might be in genuine danger.

For the "Flowey messes with the interface" parts, maybe have the show abruptly cut to commercial, then cut back to the show before the commercial's actually finished, then cut to credits, then back, then to the middle of a Spongebob episode that's slated to air later that night, then back again, etc.

So maybe the second season/mini-series is Chara murdering shit in the human world while Frisk lives his life with Asgore and Toriel and eventually shit gets real when Chara attacks Undine so everyone starts to think Frisk is turning evil but then they find out he's not so they all have to team up and fight Chara who is now like level max and beat him with the power of friendship and shit.

Hire someone who has never played the game but hates everything he's heard about it to make a completely unrelated movie. Recast frisk as a white girl. Replace Sans with a comic relief sidekick. Force a romantic subplot in there. Get Jennifer Lawrence to play Undyne but make her armor sluttier. She'll die and get brought back by the power of friendship at some point. Make it 3d. How do you guilt-trip people with entrapment in a cartoon? That seems like the most important part of Undertale, and I'm not sure how you'd make an equivalent string of events in a traditional broadcast show. I guess you could have preachy speeches, like Xavier: Renegade Angel's Emodynamics speech. It'd be better off on a streaming service, where people could pick stuff and get railroaded.

I tried it under pressure from a group of close friends on steam calling it cute and heartwarming. I just found it odd and anxiety inducing for some reason. couldn't make much sense from the characters other than papyrus' wackiness and toriel's overly saccharine demeanor. finally got through it by mere 'gotta finish it' willpower and because I thought some of the tracks hit that nostalgic string in a sense.

when I got to the canon ending and fought Asriel I couldn't believe what my eyes witnessed, by god that ending was underwhelming.

I have yet to do a genocide run but after seeing the fucked up difficulty spike that is sans I threw hands. to this day I still hold true to my belief that the game is basically three separate storylines that the player chooses from because Toby couldn't figure out what he wanted the game to be thematically.

Alphys created Flowey, so she's relevant too. In the Genocide route, she's evacuating everyone.

Undyne isn't very relevant to the Flowey/Asriel plot, I suppose, but facing her is part of escaping the underground, learning about the monsters, and befriending everyone. She's more relevant in the Genocide route, where she's a major obstacle and doing everything she can to buy more time for the evacuating monsters.

I guess I'm just disappointed in the kind of investment I ultimately had with the characters in comparison to what I formerly expected. it takes at least three runs through the game in its entirety just to bring the story to its full closure but the first times I played I couldn't figure out what to do in order to make certain stuff happen (like the undyne date) and I guess that jaded my opinion somewhat.

I guess I'll have to settle with the characters not being nearly as deep as I expected.

Genocide route at least gives us a reason and a sense of in-depth about the motives of the characters. It's better executed in plot-wise than pacifist route. Although both routes are actually shit and in the end, UT is only meant to cater 15 year old Tumblr girls, but it's a story nevertheless.
