They notice that the fans happen to very much like a particular character, so they either center more of the show around them or give them their own show, because if people like something, then giving them JUST that something without any of the supporting details that made said something good in the first place will totally work.

The boy genius idea was not invented by Dexter, and there are numerous differences between the shows (for example, Jimmys parents and friends know about his lab.
