I actually really liked that use of repetition, mainly because Darkseid being portrayed as this nigh-omniscient, can be everywhere supreme force of depression, loneliness, death, fear and darkness without actually being on panel really works for the character and even better for Scott who's spent his entire life trying to escape Darkseid physically and mentally.

None because I've seen it hundreds of times already. It's about editing, and King would do well to watch it as his idea of pacing is so stunted that he thinks devoting half on an issue to repeating the same two words on a black background is a good way to get a point across.
>>
>>94672574
90's are my favorite DC decade, you in denial fuckhead.
>>
>>94672618
>None because I've seen it hundreds of times already
Then you are a brainlet hundred times over. It's talking about putting things in context and judging the piece as a whole, editing part isn't really relevant here but what I said is. That's how King's stylistic choices work as well. You don't like them, that's fine, but unless you have any sound argument for how King's stylistic choices are objectively terrible, show some self awareness and don't jump into every thread that oh so mentions you most disliked writer and repeat constantly for which there are no basis.

>>
>>94673270
Hitchcock was too stupid not to realize so.

Nice mad, anyway. It's almost like King did something bad to your kitten?
>>
>>94673230
Thank you Sherlock. Hitchcock is talking about editing and explaining the importance of context, the part about context is applicable universally, as in everything. People can use same narrative devices again and again, a lot of writers and filmmakers do this textually/visually but in different scenarios it creates different results. That's what happens in King's work. Not that you have any argument for or against it.
>>
>>94673336
And it's a boring uninteresting crutch that adds nothing within the context of the narrative aside from making people feel smart about reading the same two words every other panel. I have no idea why you think that yelling about context suddenly makes bad writing good.
>>
>>94673270
No Hitchcock realized the importance of context. Hitchcock did use a lot of his tricks and used them in different context and they all stood for different things. Keep memeing though.
>>
>>94673386
The important distinction is that Hitchcock knew how to actually craft a story and characters without relying on the same repetitive bag of tricks that comprise the entirety of King's oeuvre.
>>
>>94673380
No you've or maybe some other anon complained about King's use of repetition in all his work, I'm explaining you how those choices affect his work.
>makes bad writing good.
You got any brilliant argument for why it's bad aside from "it doesn't work for me so it's shit"?
>>
>Tom King is the Hitchcock of comics
Nice.
>>
>>94673424
They affect his work by being the most obvious and lazy literary devices that allow him to avoid crafting things like narrative, characterization, and dialogue.

Not really how King's work goes. In La Nouvelle Vague movement directors often told same stories of thematic relevance and what made it classic is their style.
>>
>>94673457
>it's shit because I don't like it
At this point I could give up and say "don't like it, don't read it."

But then, what would you do with your life?
>>

And King has zero style.

Sick rebuttal. I'd repeat the question of how repeating yourself ad nauseum is the worst possible stylistic trademark imaginable but I'd fear that your crippling insecurity would prevent you from even attempting to formulate a response that doesn't involve yelling about how poorly constructed writing is just misunderstood contextually.
>>
>>94673522
He has to repeat himself over and over again to get through one issue of a comic.

Ugh, too many polysyllabic words! Could you rewrite that, please?

So there is a stylistic choice after all. Why would you go and say he has no style then? Are you too buttblasted to comprehend something, actually think straight about it and then form your argument? Did you intentionally contradict yourself or were you too stupid to realize you were contradicting yourself? I feel like it's the latter and please confirm it so I can close this thread, I don't really have patience to deal with stupidity.
>>
>>94673555
>how poorly constructed writing is
Make a distinction between well and poorly constructed and then explain how you subjective definition relates to King's works.
>>
>>94673640
Are you really so deliberately obtuse and desperate that you have to single out the almost non existent difference between saying something has no style and having a bad style?

You words champ, not mine. You literally said King has 0 style, probably meant to imply it was generic or boilerplate. Well constructed is weaving your themes into the plot organically without sacrificing your focus on the narrative and characterizations. Poorly constructed is placing a priority on your perceived thematic depth to the point where half of your story is a flashing neon light indicating what the audience is supposed to take away from the story. It's illustrated perfectly here >>94673714, where the same thematic content is used as a punctuation mark once after an issue of subtle build up, as opposed to spamming it over and over again like it's clever subtext.

What you are saying is very much your own perceived subjectivity. Stories are of multiple types, one that focuses on themes, one that's narrative (plot) bound, one that's trying to be everything. What King does is focuses on thematic elements through the study of characters and simple metaphoric narrative. King is constructing a commentary about something using a metaphoric premise and putting characters in use. What I'm saying here is all basic literary theory. There's also an objective criteria for how you go about reading these texts.
Also your complain about how Morrison did it better is also very disingenuous because it works on assumption that all stories have to form in a certain manner whereas there multiple ways of forming a story. King's use of Darkseid Is is different from Morrison's because King is injecting discontinuity and punctuations to show the fractured I'm narrative. It can work on multiple levels, which level King is operating in is hard to say.
>>
>>94674416
>>94674416
I was asked to explain what I thought was well constructed and what constitutes poor construction, and you come back at me with some weird explanation about how there are different types of stories and that King is writing a story using basic narrative devices while not making a single mention of whether or not it works or is well written. Maybe say something of substance next time you deign to educate people on basic literally theory.
>>
>>94674828
What I said is very much of relevance. Your perception isn't broad enough to articulate a text, what else can I do if not educate you about the basics?
>>
>>94674399
>Spencer deserved better
No he doesn't. Fuck Spencer.
>>
>>94667770
On the one hand, it doesn't. On the other hand, digital and physical sales are extremely similar so it's a good gauge on how books are doing anyway.
>>
>>94675202
No its not. You said absolutely nothing about what constitutes a well written text, just what the criteria of a written text are. King employing narrative techniques does not mean they are effective. You appealing to objectivity while offering zero opinions of your own is extremely disingenuous.
>>
>>94667770
Kinda prefer digital so I don't have to find more room for my comics. Plus, I can read it while on the toilet.
>>
>>94675463
Your argument was literally that "this is how it should be done because it has been done that way" and your gripes with King's styles are your own. I highlighted how on both front you are wrong. It's up to you from there on to formulate a new argument because your narrow horizons have just been widened.
>>
>>94675747
No, I was asked to give an opinion on what constituted well constructed writing, something that you have failed to do on multiple accounts while sucking your own farts through a tube.
>>
>>94675788
Really are angry retard, aren't you? I told you how stories can be written with some general examples of what author chooses to focus on. For example an episodic series doesn't need to focus on plots since there's no overarching narrative and the plot within episode can be described in layman's terms. It's very structural for the most part, something like Power Puff Girls or an Ellis comic. Plot bound narrative on the other hand focus on engaging plots, their main attractions are set pieces. Westerns were very much this type is stories, it was all about who will betray whom or how all of it will gold out, so themes and characters became simple. Now thematically focused stories, they focus on characters inner turmoil or maybe metaphysical elements, here the plots become secondary, a Tarkovsky movie, they're meditative exercises. And these are not the all types of storytelling but the point is when you are judging a work of any kind, you need to realize what the author is going for and disregard your expectations. The way to judge King's work would be this, to realize what he's doing and if it's being executed well, your argument here >>94673879 loses ground because you don't really know what you should be looking for.
This is all basic literary theory that even undergrad brainlets know about and since you act like you have something important and revelatory to highlight when you shitpost here, one would assume you actually know what you are talking about, which you of course don't and it's a shame.
>>
>>94676228
You really are an insecure fuckhead aren't you? Instead of writing an essay on how I should go about expressing my opinions about why I think King is a bad writer, why don't you actually engage in what I have to say? Is it because you are too scared? Is it because you can't formulate an opinion of your own? Citing Tarkosvsky doesn't suddenly make using half your story to spam the same two words over and over again a clever or well executed example of writing. Take the fart tube out of your mouth and breathe some fresh air for once in your life.
>>
>>94668979
What would you say the sales for New Super-Man are?

I'm invested in the book and badly want it to succeed.

I want more lamia waifu
>>
>>94676372
>You really are an insecure fuckhead aren't you?
Nope, I'm "just an educated on the matters that I want to talk about" kind of fuckhead. I'm literally going to continue to tell you that the basis of the formation of your criticism is pretty much wrong, once you get how to form a well articulated critique that's not entirely subjective, we can actually move on to talking about the art you want to slander. In this instance me saying why King's work is well done would just be treating a symptom, I want you to cure the disease. Your ass gets blasted every time I've pointed out you don't know what you are talking about, instead of attacking me you should apply yourself.
>>
>>94670048
Give it time.
>>
>>94676833
Explain to me how King's repetition is good writing instead of bad. Be as "objective" as you want. I doubt you will though as you seem so concerned with maintaining your false sense of superiority that you have to pretend to avoid engaging in a conversation because I'm so inferior.
>>
>>94677049
Repetition where? Which context?
>>
>>94677165
It's a crutch he falls back on in literally everything that he writes, but let's focus specifically on the most recent issue of Mister Miracle.
>>
>>94677273

Rando butting in who's only read the preview but it was establishing the forever war between New Genisis and Apokolips
>>
>>94677273
Oh that's easy. King injected spatial and temporal discontinuity to frustrate readers. We all know that something is wrong with this reality. The play obviously here is that characters won't realize this for a while and readers frustration would reach boiling point. It's a very obtuse emotionally manipulative writing.
>>
>>94677395
Also forgot to add, the more frustrated our experience throughout is, the more cathartic would be the obvious conclusion.
>>
>>94677395
Now explain how very obtuse emotionally manipulative writing designed to frustrate readers in the most obvious way imaginable is good writing.
>>
>>94677463
Explain how it isn't, also I kind of did here >>94677463.
>>
>>94677415
So you're saying that all I need to do is write half a comic book and fill up the rest with blank space and pseudo intellectuals will call it cathartic instead of lazy and obvious?
>>
>>94677491
It's lazy and has the subtlety of a sledgehammer.
>>
>>94677493
Depends on what you are writing and since we are going there I really doubt you even have an imagination to do the lazy and obvious. I mean you are shitposting on vietnamese trap porn board.
>>
>>94677518
>lazy
Buzzword
>subtlety
Not going for it.
>>
>>94677548
Well in this instance we are talking about a comic book that devotes half of it's space to dark panels with the same phrase over and over again. I would never write a Mister Miracle story about insanity and suicide but if I was going to do it I could guarantee it would be much more imaginative than flashing the same two words ad nauseum, as that is about the least imaginative way of getting a point across I can think of.
>>
>>94677567
You are a true academic.
>>
>>94677679
>>94677703
No I'm not, I most definitely am better than you when it comes to praising and criticizing a fiction. Why would you resort back to buzzwords honestly and then call me out? Do you watch 40s noir, read Watchmen and TDKR, consume post 9/11 fiction, all of these that are fiction that fictionize reality and capture the zeitgeist and complain how obvious the stuff they're doing is and how you could do better? Fuck off seriously, if you could, you would. Genuine criticism is the one where a critic remains a critic and doesn't become an imaginary author of a fiction he had no chance to create. Instead of giving a genuine argument, using examples or sources you reverted to "I'm better than this hack" and you expect anyone to take your bullshit seriously?
>>
>>94677997
I read and watch all of those things. The fact that you think you are somehow superior for consuming classic noir and reading Watchmen is fucking laughable. You are the worst kind of pretentious asshole, one who thinks they are superior but when push comes to shove starts crying and whining like a little baby when asked to engage in some healthy debate. You brought up my imagination and then slagged me off for it. You claimed to be an expert on objectivity while offering no opinions of you're own besides insulting me. You consistently talk down to me while saying absolutely nothing of substance. If you want to be taken seriously, don't fly off the handle like the little bitch baby that you are whenever you encounter a dissenting opinion, and don't write essays about critical theory in order to mask your inability to form a coherent argument. Bye now, thanks for confirming that Tom King is for empty headed "intellectuals" who mask their insecurity by pontificating on shoddy repetitive shitty excuses for comic book writing.
>>
>>94678545
>The fact that you think you are somehow superior for consuming classic noir and reading Watchmen is fucking laughable.
No and there was a question directed somewhere that you carefully avoided.
>You brought up my imagination and then slagged me off for it.
For a valid reason but you seem awfully pissed that someone didn't want to hear your fan fiction.
>You claimed to be an expert on objectivity while offering no opinions of you're own besides insulting me.
I did offer them, you then chose to take the discourse in a memey route while calling me a psued, which I definitely am but I still know something.
