I'll give this a shot, but it's already sounding pedestrian as fuck in its pretensions by appealing to the one book on totalitarianism every kid in junior high has probably read or at least been told about.

It won't fall, east Asian countries are smart enough to understand that creating a political situation that will enable tens of millions of refugees with no skills relevant to living in a 21st century world to jump the border would be a social/economic catastrophe. Even China hates NK but they keep them propped up just so they'll keep the borders contained, if they catch anyone escaping they ship them back.

That's fair, but I think the problem is that we all have years of "understanding" of Best Korea, and Guy is just presenting what he experienced. I genuinely get the impression that he had no agenda one way or the other, and the problem is that he didn't think about these things that hard. Consider yourself - fucking with a tour guide and reporting fruit pickers. Is that something that would get anyone in trouble? In 99% of the world, no. Not really. In Best Korea? Yeah. Those people probably died. But I have to imagine it would be hard to keep that in mind, because it's not our regular reality.

>>94635026

>>
>>94634995
China already operates on a policy of returning anybody they catch sneaking the border even when it almost guarantees that it'll kill them. Defectors have to sneak all the way out to Thailand before they can fly back into South Korea. If a true state of war erupts again they won't be able to escape the international scrutiny to keep operating under those terms. Even if the war itself were short and easy the immense power vacuum would still create an insane refugee crisis that nobody in Asia wants to have dropped onto them, including/especially South Korea itself.

It's all completely moot anyway, the same thing will happen every other fucking time this happens, the NK governemt will quietly offer to deescalate in exchange for more food aid.

>>
>>94632228

Cheers OP, that was great.

What I genuinely don't understand is why Best Korea is allowed to continue. Other countries with lesser wealth, who treat their citizens better (admittedly still very poorly, but better), and have less mineral wealth have been 'annexed' and partitioned, and other countries have been used as buffer zones to a far better degree.

Don't get me wrong, this current political situation is daft, and if anyone is stupid enough to use nukes on either side, every country in the UN is legally obliged to act in one way or another. I just genuinely see no purpose in the Kim hegemony for China, when Hong Kong is slowly being absorbed despite the far greater value it presents to China as an 'independent state'.
>>
>>94635762
I'm not going to claim to be an expert or even knowledgeable on the subject. But my understanding of Best Korea is that it's been propped up for decades because China does not want to deal with the inevitable refugee crises that will result from the Kim regime falling. That's basically it. And I don't blame them. Having nearly a million people with no skills and no understanding of the world suddenly begging for food and work? It's a fucking nightmare scenario. On top of that, South Korea can and would be destroyed within hours, and they're one of the global economies. Everyone on the planet would be hurt by South Korea suddenly disappearing in a hail of NK artillery fire.

So, it's not about a war. There isn't anyone on this planet that thinks that NK would be a force to be reckoned with. It's all about how to deal with the fallout, and what to do with their citizens afterwards. And unfortunately from the perspective of America, we have a shitty fucking record of dealing with peace-keeping/nation-building.
>>
>>94635051
There's no legitimate reason to believe the US would even attempt to strike first. The entire gameplan is to make NK stand down now that its missiles are an actual threat to allied countries and US territories.
>>
>>94636378
I'm just repeating what China said. They will not get involved in a war IF best korea makes the first blow. Which, as you said and realistically speaking, means China won't get involved in any war that involved best korea.
>>
>>94636480

>>

>>
>>94636559
Well, no. The entire world world economy has to worry. Again, Seoul will be wiped out in minutes. North Korea will not survive a war. I'm pretty sure even they aren't even insane enough to believe otherwise. But they can and will destroy South Korea, which is a major world player. That's going to fuck hard with everyone else on the planet. Nuclear weapons are frankly just a play from North Korea. They honestly don't matter in the long run. What does matter is all of the conventional artillery and missiles that NK has had for decades and can use right now.

That's true about South Korea. It would hurt the world. It wouldn't, however, hurt the world to the extent that a full war with China would. Then there's the fact that South Korea is the only place left that makes good movies, so that's another tragedy.
>>
>>94637220

An asian war on that scale and with that many problems would likely be an incredible boon to the world economy. Wounded China taking on more mouths to feed and destabilizing their social structure (and in effect, their financial solvency with its wonderful turns on labor costs), a new nation to build a world banking site around (we're down to, what... 4 nations left that aren't a part of the world banking conglomerate?), and a hostile foothold of direct land contact against China with occupied norkland that would force them to the capitulate more than ever to pro-western doctrine.

All I know is that I spent money to watch The Interview on Youtube because at the time I was desperate to support the idea of new movies being released digitally and The Interview was the first movie to do so. I don't want to spend $20 going to a theater when I have a computer.

We're seeing a lot of movies today getting digital releases in the same format - $5 or so for a two day "rental". I want to believe I helped promote that idea as financially viable.

No, this time is different because of President Trump. Every other President cared about preserving the North Korean status quo. Trump doesn't. He's a significant change in variables. Hopefully skug people like you turn out to be right. I'll take the whole "I told you so" gloating over a major humanitarian crisis any day. But don't pretend that the world exists on a set of rails. Just because it doesn't happen doesn't mean it couldn't happen. And the reason it doesn't happen is because there are people who are aware that these tensions don't resolve themselves naturally, despite what smartasses like you insist in the comment section of every news site ever.

It's horrible. These people deserve to be free. They live in the worst standards in the world, even worse than the shittiest African countries. It's not their fault, either. They aren't devout followers of some bullshit religion like Islam. They're lied to, but few really believe all of the propaganda.

Yet I've never seen a liberal speak up for North Korean people. Fucking countries like Sweden and Germany are taking in hordes of refugees who end up turning the place to shit because of inherent cultural differences, but North Koreans don't follow a religion that tells them to rape western women.

The progressives of the world are focused on the wrong reason. Right side of history my ass. When our grandchildren look back after the regime fell, they'll ask "If everyone knew what was happening, then why didn't they do anything?" The same way students of today ask this about the holocaust.

The difference is that the Middle East has an obscene amount of wealth that can be directed towards sympathetic international PR and the motivation of an ideology that demands global cultural expansion at all costs.

North Korea is the complete opposite, whatever little wealth the country has is directed toward an insular cult of personality that aggressively promotes an insular self-reliant hermit society that wants nothing to do with the outside world. They don't feel any need to sell themselves in a way that makes them fashionable for blog virtue-signalling.

If they have more missiles that can do what the last few tests did can they can theoretically hit the west coast
the thing there is that for every super scary missile they fire that could actually do something, they have another one blow up on the launch pad, so it's not especially worrying to the country with the most advanced missile defense in the world.
The real worry is that they won't try to shoot at the united states (which has the tech and ability to react) but instead shoot somewhere else, where, which thanks to sheer speed of a IBCM, won't have any time to react. Like Guam or SK
although i've heard they have so much conventional artillery pointed at seoul that a missile would be a waste of effort.
Ultimately, i'ts not likely to happen because most of the hard power of NK rests in the power of army generals who like living comfortable lives, who know perfectly well that the entire country will get turned into a crater if Un decides to actually hit the big red button.

China also wants NK to stick around because starting shit with the US or an ally would not only cause one of the worst humanitarian crisis in the last hundred years, but also likely result in the US setting up military bases right next to China's NK border, after tearing the country to shreds.

China doesn't want millions of refugees, and it doesn't want more US military installations right at its doorstep.

It's a shame, because honestly, it would be simple to change if human beings could just own up to their mistakes and recognize how to move forward for the better.

A peaceful regime change to short-lived Chinese rule as to create a more effective infrastructure and actually get people fed would be fairly simple, but the NK leadership would never allow it out of pride.

I can't think about NK too much because it just pisses me off.
>>
If someone would make a comic about "behind the scenes" of NK, it would be some Maus-level shit. Some really fucking horrifying stories from many defectors. Like the story of one labor camp guard who defected and escaped the country when his colleagues raped and killed a pregnant woman, stuck a shovel deep in the corpse's vagina and threw the carcass on a huge pile of corpses. This happened in early 90's during Kim Jong Il's regime but I could imagine those death camps still exist there.

Big problem with your idea: China doesn't WANT to run NK. It would go over like trying to fix the US border problem issues by annexing mexico, or having Japan, Korea and Taiwan give up their languages in favor of Mandarin.

It's not just pride and greed here. NK deliberately designed their society to be independent and isolated from outside cultural influences as possible.
>>
>>94646606
You could also add that previous Korean dynasties conditioned entire peninsula for this kind of obedience and subservience.
The fate of gommunism in each of its states was closely intertwined with qualities of each society.
>>
>>94639935
A tankie would never defend a "normal country with a market based economy". Their entire schtick is "actually communist regimes are awesome, you're just brainwashed by western imperialism and capitalism, you bourgie liberal fuck".
>>
>>94646606
>Big problem with your idea: China doesn't WANT to run NK

Oh, I agree. It's a pie-in-the-sky idea, but it's one that shouldn't be a problem. Hell, having the Kim's just go to Chinese leadership to ask for logistical planning help would be a step up, but i think he's too proud even for that.

>NK deliberately designed their society to be independent and isolated from outside cultural influences as possible.
This is the other problem. People think of NK as a communist state, but it's degenerated into feudalism. Who's to say what massive psychological damage the culture shock of the NK people finding out about the outside world could have?
>>
>>94632228
You don’t have to like North Korea to recognize that they are not and have never been the aggressors in the current conflict. The U.S. committing genocide during the Korean war. We bombed damn near everything in the country and it was estimated that we killed 20% of the population. They are still digging up mines and explosives left behind by the Korean War TO THIS DAY.

Say what you will about how their government treat their citizens, but the United States has proven entirely willing to do much, MUCH worse and any understanding of the North Korean conflict that paints them as the sole aggressors is fundamentally ignorant of history. America is not and has never been the good guys here.
>>
>>94647182
But the North were the original aggressors, here, anon.

I agree that the war became unnecessarily brutal in it's later stages, but the term genocide is inappropriate; there was no attempt to exterminate the North Korean people - unless you're suggesting that atrocities such as the Dresden bombing were attempts to exterminate the German people.

In reality, that conflict is a result of Japanese colonial rule and American/Soviet mishandling of diplomatic talks in the Far-East post-WW2 (mostly due to pride).

>>94639387

>It's horrible. These people deserve to be free. They live in the worst standards in the world, even worse than the shittiest African countries. It's not their fault, either.

World is much more cynical than you think. NK and its atrocities are tolerated purely for monetary reasons. Its a poor country filled with humanitarian crisis and uneducated people, it would be a tremendous burden for China and SK if borders were opened.

Only feasible way for the regime to end quickly would be if NK would discover Oil in its land. Then suddenly every major power wants to save its people from the tyranny of its dictatorship. Thats just the way things go.
>>
>>94647182
Bullshit, the Norks started and got backing by Stalin as a nice little proxy, hoping to get all the peninsula. Then the UN got involved, Stalin died, the SU collapsed and the NK government threatens bombing Seoul or Tokyo every year so the world will give them free stuff. Can't wait till they're gone. Whether it's being ruled by China or forced to integrate with the South, at that point anything will be better than what they have now, and the worst part is the common citizen already knows it. That's why there's reports coming in of the younger generations being cynical and detached from all the propaganda. Once China started smuggling in media, they found out why they got stuff like food from the US in the 90s despite being told how the US will invade any second. They no longer believe in the lofty dreams of the Party.
>>

If you mean paying for Korean War remains, I don't know exactly. But I do know there's been various projects that have been done to find and return the remains. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) handles it, and I've met a number of forensic anthropologists who do the recovery and identification work. I believe there is some sort of trade in terms of greasing the Best Korean wheels to make it happen, but I couldn't say exactly what it is.

It's about as much of a song and dance as you might expect from reading this comic. A lot of times they go out to former battle fields to find remains, and the North Korean guides will helpfully point out places they're likely to find remains. Which they do. Very quickly in shallow graves. Often times with two right legs. It's not all a show, there are real remains being found and returned, but it's fairly obvious sometimes the North Koreans just had the remains elsewhere and jumbled them all together and reburied them to keep up appearances. As recovery of military remains go, it's been a worth while effort. It's just also another look at how fucking messed up the country is. The rampant, insistent denial of reality to anyone and everyone.

Thank you for the story time OP. I listened to some NK jammin 'chunes while reading and the comic piqued my interest in Korean history.

Coming from a background of a soviet occupied country I can tell you that no, nobody fucking believes all this bullshit. They simply don't have a choice. Maybe people at the very top, but they are too busy dodging all the hazards that come with their positions.

But NK is a special case unlike most eastern bloc countries, because it's populated by asians. I do not want to sound like a racist but it's just simply a fact that people of the east are different from people in the west. Just look at japanese social systems (which you can observe in animus), or chinese philosophies. They ARE different.

So maybe there's a larger number of them that actually belive in communist system than you might think. Then again a large number of them are suffering incredibly and are trying their best to get to positions like the guides, translators and animators in the comic; I'd imagine. And none of them are really allowed to voice their opinion.

Also since China is on the security council, they will vehemently veto any intervention.

The only reason the UN managed to pull an intervention in the first Korean War was because the Chinese rep was conveniently missing for ONE meeting after like 50 previous vetos on the same topic.

China did say that if NK is the one to start shit, they'll stay out of any resulting conflict. Which is basically them giving their blessing to a possible war. And I don't think it's any coincidence that today NK publicly backed away from their plans to shoot shit near Guam. They know damn well how fucked they are if China decides to turn a blind eye towards them.

Can't say I'd feel sorry if this ended with capitalist scum getting some reeducation.
>>
>>94677345
To be honest, I want to see NK get their shit rolled in.

Korean economy might take a hit but I feel like the North Koreans could stand not getting perfect healthcare and schooling for a few years after reunification. And some of the North Koreans clearly have training for real world jobs so it won't be a complete wash for like, the people living in the capital, and I'm sure there is plenty of labour work to be done to get the rest of the country up to speed that'll take a few decades' worth of planning anyway. NK already has shit like the special economic zone so it's not like capitalism and modern day manufacturing are new concepts to them. Even if the number of people with real life training are few, they can easily spearhead training the rest of the NKs after they're up to speed.

Also China'll probably get involved in a war anyway and use the US marching towards the border as an excuse to jump in again.

How would you defuse the situation to bring about regime change?

All of their weapons are aimed at Japan and SK which means a couple million deaths in the first few hours. And they aren't stupid so you can't just evacuate the nerby countries.

They have nukes.

China/Russia do not want the US getting an even stronger foothold in the east.

South Korea resents the idea of the US taking any military action. In their view reunification will only happen through diplomatic means.

In best case scenario the regime will collapse under soft power through propaganda radio, books, and tighter sanctions. This method however is a waiting game of when and requires the US to get all the great powers on board.

NK is estimated to have 20-60 nukes on par with those used in WWII.

Even if they can't hit the US, they probably have the means to hit SK/Japan. That means even if we guess where %50 of them are you have to deal with 10-30 nukes and the fallout afterwards.

>>94639982
Now you do realize anti missile systems are only a working theory right? So far they've only been proven to work in ideal conditions when we know where the missile is launching from, its trajectory, and host of other factors.

Are those nukes even working? For all we know, all the scientists and intellectuals left North Korea for greener pastures and the whole thing's being maintained by some peasant.
>>
>>94679400
Where do you hear this estimate? I've only seen talk of less than 10 actual nukes, and it's a real crapshoot as to whether or not they even have a delivery system for them. I don't mean the missiles, I mean the ability to put them onto missiles.

They don't even have one that can be fired. The missile tests are for normal ICBMs, not nukes.

And their military training is incredibly outdated, the population is underfed, they have little to no supplies and they barely have enough bullets for any of their guns.

A tank commander once defected and had a total mental breakdown once he realized that his "elite" T-34 tank was from WW2 and how utterly easy it would be to destroy with modern weapons.

China is finally getting where its propaganda used to say it was heading back during Great Famine, ironically its one of the most capitalist countries in the world despite being tsundere about it.

NK starting shit would throw a wrench to that massive economic growth and them turning into a really major world power. Money moves the world, might sound cynical but its a fact. If you want to look for motivations for something, whether it be modern times or in history, follow the money or the resources. Theres very few cases in history where motivation for wars or violence were purely something else, like religious reasons.

Their training is so outdated and potentially useless and their weapons are old Soviet surplus that other countries wanted to get rid of

What the fuck are you talking about? People just don't want Trump to launch a war as a direct consequence of not understanding basic diplomacy because it would literally mean death in the tens, hundreds of thousands, if not in millions of people. North Korea is known to have so much firepower aimed at Seoul alone that it would wipe out the city immediately as an automatic retaliatory attack.
>>
>>94646339

Just looking at the art work depicting the torture made by people who've managed to escape is harrowing. And those prison camps never went a way, it's one of the primary ways they keep people in check, since they go after your entire family and the crimes your family members commits against the state carry over to them. It's also been reported that they use prisoners as way to make money by "renting" them out to the Russian lumber industry and then keeping all the wage money for themselves.

>North Korea is known to have so much firepower aimed at Seoul alone that it would wipe out the city immediately as an automatic retaliatory attack.
In case anybody doubts this, in the Korean War, Seoul was overrun and burned to the ground within 3 days.

Of course, there were extenuating circumstances then, like 90% of the SK military out on leave and partying and didn't know what the fuck to do when the emergency recall orders came in, and SK blowing up their own military and civilians in a hasty attempt to stop NK forces from reaching Seoul, but if NK decides to plow through the border, they will probably do massive damage to Seoul before anybody can even get close to responding. The border patrols and the frontline US bases will put up a slightly better fight now but Seoul will still be fucked.

They smuggle in South Korean and western TV shows all the time through China, before it was DVDs, now it's thumb drives. Back in the 90s and 80s you could also easily make your TV pick up South's broadcasts if you knew how. And if you were clever enough, you could rig the TV in a way that you wouldn't get caught when the state's TV inspectors came to inspect your TV.
