we were talking about old school cartoons like tom and jerry, and felix the cat, then he mention a cat that fights a lot, but he's not sure if it was heathcliff.

The timeframe is right for Heathcliff and the Catillac Cats.

Another possibility is Bad Cat, which was a Weekend Special that aired on ABC. It wasn't a series but aired more than once and it was thirty years ago so some details might have gotten muddled.
