What went wrong? What changed this season to cause such

There was no sudden change in quality. Season 2 was pretty shitty after the first couple of episodes. Already, Rick was no longer acting like Morty's Grandpa in the slightest, and the writers were starting to jack him off more and more. The only reason people are saying it's sudden is because now they're not hiding it, with dialogue full of Rick's long winded preaching, the characters jacking off his ego, and action scenes where he wipes out everyone with further character wank dialogue, not to mention worse animation quality in these scenes.
