It was all Toffee, the Magic High Comission's and Glossaryck's death and now Eclipsa. Anon Jackie has moved the plot along a shitload more than Janna. The biggest thing Janna has done was invite Star to the seance where Ludo could ambush her.

Jackie has, by dating Marco, awakened Star's romantic feelings regarding Marco, has pushed her towards feelings of jealousy and to using Eclipsa's dark magic, has made her feel super conflicted and torn because suddenly being a good friend and doing the "right thing" made Star feel awful and isn't what she wants, and everything eventually led to Star's feelings towards Marco getting out and strife and awkwardness appearing between them.

She'll also probably make Marco feel more confident about himself and his self-image. It's not just about screen minutes, dude.

It was like pulling teeth to talk about the show at all back then because it was 90% background character shipping, and the OC was shit, as it is now.

These threads go through a constant cycle of always making the same 3 jokes, just the jokes switch up all the time, but at least right now you can talk/ask about the show and get a response instead of being ignored in favor of background characters. I don't think current threads are amazing (they're never great when we don't have new episodes for a while), but they're much better than in like 2015 because we have more to talk about

Obviously Star has always been the true protagonist but it feels like Marco's really fallen behind while everyone else was making leaps and bounds in character development, and that's most apparent when the spotlight's on him and we're retreading the same goddamn karate plot we've been doing since Season 1.
Fucking Buff Frog of all characters could pull off two solid episodes without Star and Marco being involved at all. The best Marco-focused episodes are Running With Scissors and, uh, Naysaya I guess? And it's arguable if he's even really THE lead in either of those.

I think the biggest problem with Marco episodes is that they keep trying to set him up as the straight man to another character, basically replacing Star with Sensei or the Naysaya or Pony Head or some other asshole of the week, and it just completely falls flat because not only is the chemistry (often intentionally) bad, but it's such a step down from his fantastic chemistry with Star that it makes you feel like "why am I being subjected to this garbage instead of Marco and Star doing literally anything else."

Tom and Hekapoo are the only ones who have ever been close to as entertaining with him. It's no wonder they got so much shipfaggotry immediately.

Well, Marco and Jackie's relationship is intentionally much less "exciting"/energetic and more awkward. It would be wrong to say it "failed", but I would say Marco and Jackie's "co-development" was more engaging than their actual relationship was. They had some cute moments that were different than anything Star and Marco could do, but once Marco more or less got over himself and started being comfortable with Jackie by Starcrushed that potential had been exhausted.

And like we saw in Starcrushed, Jackie isn't really a "straight man," she's just much more mellow or "slow and steady" than Star. And when she throws Marco a curveball, he doesn't know how to react and totally fumbles it rather than follow up like we know he would with Star.
