I will say I hate when trades don't have the covers between the issues and just put them in a gallery.

I know it'd probably be slightly more expensive but in a perfect world they'd have the covers how they were printed between the issues, with the gallery being all the unlettered covers.

This at least has some subtlety to it, today this would start with him giving some speech at a conservative party dinner where he shits on the poor, then he and his guests would continue to shit on the poor for a few pages at the table, then this would happen. It's a simultaneous issue with decompression, that editors even let people make scenes that long.

>>
>>
>>94511865

>>
>>
>>94512296
He appeared in 1984 in Swamp Thing, and this started in 1988.
Even though there were so many writers who chose to not continue plot points, there was heavy continuity in this series
>>
>>94512296
4 years. Hellblazer started in '88, 1st appearance was in '84.
>>
>>

>>
For those new in this thread, Hellblazer ran in real time, with characters growing old. Gemma was in her late 20/30s by the end of the series.
>>
>>
I have a confession: I haven't finished Swamp Thing yet.
>>
>>94511796
Wait, I thought Sandman and Swamp Thing mostly established that human souls are practically worthless to demons because they're probably going to have you regardless of whether or not they paid for it. I guess they're just making a point to better suit the analogy.
>>
>>
>>94512508

>>
>>94512636
Current Constantine is a different person altogether. Hellblazer started as being in DCU, then when Vertigo was formed, shifted more and more away. There are arguments on /co/ once in a while about how much of Vertigo can be considered canon, then there's Johns via Flashpoint who said that everything there was its own world.

John was physically deaged a few times during the series.

Carey>Delano>Ennis>>Milligan>Jenkins>>Diggle>Ellis>Azzarello>Mina. For me. I love the Delano issue On The Beach so much. I like that the trades DC are putting out are collect the one shots and stuff too like The Horrorist. JLD is the dumbest idea ever and sadly DC doesn't see this so pew pew magic Heckblazer is here to stay.

>>
>>
>>
>>
>>94512991
I wouldn't say I got stuck. I am still a little way through the Moore stuff. My excuse is that I was reading it on my phone, and the art deserved a bigger screen. I really intend to finish that up soon.
>>
>>
>>94512898
The weird thing is that they could've continued Vertigo Constantine while still having diet Constantine in the DCU.

I just hope maybe we'll get a Young Animal Hellblazer done the line.
>>
>>
>>94513132
I personally believe that there was some animosity between the editing teams for main DC and Vertigo, and when New52 happened, the Vertigo editors lost (and now Vertigo is barely a thing).
>>
>>94513174
Which is dumb, because a lot of Vertigo stuff has become the backbone of the book store market.

>>94513216

>>
>>94513174
oh it got really bad. The firing of Karen Berger was a big fiasco. Whoever did that made a huge mistake
>>
>>
>>94513254
I should be on in like 30 minutes. I ended up having to go to the physical store and getting the shitty modem they gave me replaced.
>>
>>94513299
What's the story behind that?
>>
>>94513174
Well the Vertigo editors of then aren't at DC anymore anyway.

>>94513132
Not really, people get confused at this shit. Even if you read early Vertigo stuff that, in the letters page you still get a lot of people confused about continuity and where it all fit in, that's why ultimately Hellblazer became separate from the rest of the DCU and they stopped trying to reinvent obscure characters like Kid Eternity under Vertigo.

Ultimately, I get it, (Vertigo)Constantine in this day and age isn't a huge seller, but Heckblazer isn't either. You're failing to find much of a new audience with him except for hype men that love crossovers and shit(and the number of people that pick up Heckblazer and JLD is small anyway) but in turn you're driving away the fans of old John because this is not what they're interested in. To be honest I don't think there's a need for Vertigo Constantine right now because I don't think there are writers that can do a good job with him right now.
>>
>>
>>94513330
Berger stepped down. Bond was fired. And I don't know if it was a mistake, really, we'll need to wait and see how Berger Books and Black Crown does.

Editorial didnt like how blatant the Avengers analouges were, so they were changed, like (IIRC) the Cap expy had his sheild removed. And a LOSH parody was nixed as one of the editors who had worked on the book saw it as an attack on the characters.

Meh. I don't know. I read Dial H, Kraken and Railsea from him and his short story for Hellblazer. I don't think he';d be an amazing fit but he might do a great job, who knows. Still, he's not a comic book writer so if he's your first choice then that kind of proves my point since he's not really a realistic suggestion. Also I think he kind of fumbled the start of Dial H and that's why it didn't get that much attention(not that ti was ever going to be a huge seller but I just think it had an iffy start)

Shoot, do you have the Swamp Thing issues that take place around this? I know they are in the trade, but might not be in this folder you have
>>
>>
>>
>>94514951
Was this during the weird period when Swampy was going all around the world meeting the Parliaments?
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>94514972
I'm not sure, but in the Hellblazer context (spoilers for the next few issues) Swampy really wants a kid, and wants to use John's body for the conception
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>94515012
In that case, it's WAAAY before then. Around this point, I think Swampy was screwing around with weird fantasy gribblies like evil zombie pirates in Lousiana and trying to turn Solomon Grundy into a new Swamp Thing and fighting the intelligent embodiment of all fungi.

Bunch of no taste having faggots then.
>>
>>94514951
#76 and 77? If so I have them. Had to check
>>
>>
>>
>>94515137
Yep, that follows next after this issue I believe. That's the order in the new trades at least. This thread won't be big enough for both though
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>94515159
I didn't realize you had to read Swamp-Thing alongside this. Going to finish the thread with issue 10
>>
>>94515159
I'll storytime them in a different thread if someone makes a new thread
>>
>>
>>94515237
I can't remember if it's absolutely necessary to continue with. It's important for Swamp Thing, but not really this.
>>
>>
>>
>>94515256
ingenious, John

>Going to finish the thread with issue 10
I think after this issue finishes, Swamp Thing directly takes over so you'll either have to storytime the Swamp issue or stop at 9 because otherwise you'll be skipping material.
>>
>>94515303
Yeah, I would vote: Do Swamp Thing 76, then start a thread with Hellblazer 10 as the cover, and continue with the next Swampy issue
>>
>>
>>94515299
The good news man is that this is the only crossover Hellblazer has

Chester is my most favorite Swamp Thing character. He's just a normal guy for the entire run, and still remains a major character.

Flashman, always dropping names
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>94515509
You know, I've never actually read this. The trade I got from the library was the old printing, and they skipped the ST issues. Looking at issue #10, they are deeply important to the plot.

Except for the Demon Blood part
>>
>>
>>
>>94515656
Nah, it'll all work itself out in the end. What could possibly go wrong?
>>
More tomorrow!
>>
Oops, forgot the cover. Thanks to the other storytimers and thanks for reading
>>
>>94515679
Do you think THE LORD and The Original Darkness ever go out and do stuff together? Would it be like an "old roommates settling their differences" deal, or would it be more like a father reconnecting with his estranged son?
>>
>>94515706
Continuing tomorrow morning. I'll figure something out.
>>
I want to savor this so we're going slow. I'm really getting drawn in
>>
>>94515770
That's good. When the creative team changes, you might be disappointed at times. There is a tendency for each writer to try something new, and that might involve ignoring exactly how the last run ended. Like, Delano ends his run with what could be a big status quo change for John, but then Ennis did nothing with that plot development. It was continued literally years later under a different author though.
>>
>>94507756
Hellish bump
>>
>>94513778
Lol, and they call others queer.
>>
>>94515481
Seeing non-supernatural DC characters get referenced is jarring.
>>
>>94514905
I can't help but like this demon guy.

D'aww...

>>94515256
This fucking art man, hng
>>
>>94508143
My first Hellblazer story arc was Rake at the Gates of Hell. It was the last story written by Garth Ennis.

I'd recommend it.
>>
>>94515402
L-lewd
>>
>>94518570
Didn't he write "son of man" later on at the end of Jenkins' run?
>>
>>94518634
Yes. and it's a bit of a downgrade except for one moment in the last issue of that arc.
>>
>>94515716
What? Aw man, I wanted to continue reading.
Pfff...well, see you tomorrow, I guess.
>>
You're a beast Ulti-Mate.
>>
>>94509153
why does John even go through with the demon binding? there is literally nothing in it for him, and all it does is make him feel like shit. So what a demon kills a few hundred people? its no worse than a seasonal flu virus
>>
Top Stories, mates. Classic Hellblazer is always a good read.
>>
>>94507756
From the Pit to the Pinnacle

oh yes
definitely looking forward to more tomorrow

storytime 146-150
>>
>>94511511
Storytimes are literally the only reason I still come to /co/. Thanks anon
>>
Good luck to the Anons posting this storytime you have a Herculean task ahead of you. Every once in a while someone starts a storytime of this series but never finishes it. Even I'm guilty of something similar, I started an issue by issue critical analysis of the series but only got to issue 80 something (whatever issue Ennis ended on)

There's so much political commentary throughout the entire series, a lot of it goes over most modern readers heads since it's 20+ years old and very very British.
>>
>>94512628
This is my favorite issue. John finds himself knee deep in the middle of the shit, no time or distance from the problem to come up with a clever scheme, no big green giant or the human shields he calls friends to do all the work and take all the hits for him, so all he can do is hide like the coward he really is.
>>
If someone wants to start a new thread with this cover I can get started on the next part
>>
>>94528868
Please

>>94528868
Bump for continued storytime?

Fuck it
