It is dying because Valve kinda fucked up the server browser and created artificial scarcity with cosmetics.

>Ranked is a fucking desert and the meta is literally 2 scouts, 2 soldiers, one medic and one demoman or 2 medics.
>Casual servers suck because there's no scramble after a match is done so everyone just fucks off at the end. One team usually steamrolls 80% of the time.
>Most community servers are now 24/7 turbine/2fort/hightower, trade maps or meme joke maps, all with instant respawn because people rather throw themselves and die over and over than actually play the game properly.
>The instant respawn also makes the first point almost impossible for RED to defend while the last point is almost impossible for blue to capture, so maps take half an hour to end.
>The pyro update with some much needed changes isn't out yet. People are speculating it will be released at the 10th anniversary but most lost hope already.
