I liked it in the sense that its message was the second half of a 2 parter from last time. The kids go on their own self-discovering journey, learn what their flaws are, admit them, and begin to make their lives better. But Rick and Beth both get told, in plain English, exactly why they are unhappy and how to move past their problems, and choose to ignore it and forget the therapy ever happened because they're too afraid of admitting they're flawed or taking the steps to improve themselves and be happier than they are.

I think it was a 6/10. This might be bias, but I thought as an episode it tried way, way too hard at making Rick act like Rick. Like, yes, Rick is a genius superscientist who does pull solutions out his ass, but it's never been rule-breaking the way it was here, with the cockroach suit and the tiny superweapons made from ordinary objects. That was just way beyond what has been done before and I just thought it was logically inconsistent with the rest of the series.

More than that, the ending was dumb.

That isn't related at all to what happened in the episode. We've seen Rick in life or death situations before, and he always has a backup plan, something more than just hoping a friend saves him. It wasn't related to any moral, it was just a way to make people think Rick's adventure had a purpose this episode. It actually ended up weakening the episode. If they'd done it like 2 or 3 episodes down the line, I'd applaud, but this was too soon.

Finally, the episode was gross. There was so much fucking disgusting shit in this episode. I had to look away for a good six minutes because it was just making my stomach churn to watch a pickle biting a cockroach.

This episode was a 6/10 for me.

It's precisely the kind of plot and heavy-handed "I'M BEING THE CHARACTER RIGHT NOW' result that you get from people who were fans of the show and started writing for it after it had already established. Feels nothing like the real characterization. It's Simpsons Syndrome of fans becoming writers except it happened much quicker due to the internet existing and pop culture distilling faster.

The episode was very middle-of-the-road for me. I had a few laughs, but they weren't from any kind of clever jokes like they should be from this show.

There's also nothing inherently wrong with a show having an episode dedicated to character development, but there IS when it's something that the creators have said they were gonna stay away from. Maybe I'm just disappointed, because they went back on their word about that.

The episode was easily a 6 or 7/10. I like the story direction, but it's not the reason I watch the show, and I feel like the writers shouldn't have gone in such a heavy-handed direction with their overarching plot.

It could be that Season 3 is, as Rick said, getting darker.

The entire point of this season is to shift away from comedy and nihilist humor and put more focus in the characters as their lives are changing. The episodes we had are practically bland when it comes to jokes, but the character development is shooting through the roof.

End result are episodes that are just not funny, but really help with progressing the characters. Much like how Adventure Time at some point starts to shift away from unrelated, pointless lolrandom adventures to shitcockland or wherever, and it gets serious for whole swaths of episodes; delivering a continuing narrative that alters the entire series from then on. Season 3 for R&M may in fact be entering its first 'serious' phase.

Not sure I like it. Too early to tell.

Jetpacks require fuel. Transporting extra fuel requires even more fuel since there's more mass to push upwards. It would be impractical to use the jetpack for the duration of an entire episode.

Same problem as last week in that it's just over the top murder humor and a small step into fixing the family.

I wonder if this series is amounting to anything beyond a nihilistic mantra of 'Nothing matters, nothing has consequences!' . Like any substantial emotional growth or relationships will form.

Beth has an unhealthy fixation on her father and he only seems mildly care for her, if only to benefit himself. Like he almost wanted things to go as they were so he'd have a Morty to skirt around interdimensional travel.

The show needs to establish some backstory for Rick and Beth, some grounding. We're meant to be identify with Morty and Summer at least, then pity/hate Jerry. Tho now it seems Jerry is the only one who actually has normal human feelings that aren't just thrown to the wayside for le-joke.

You have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rick & Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rick's existential catchphrase "Wubba Lubba Dub Dub," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon's genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. I generally hate when therapy is used in storytelling to fully explain characters like this. Anyone who's had extensive therapy knows that's not how it is. The helicopter scene was also going out of its way to explain Rick as a character. You can definitely tell the episode came from a newer writer eager to show how knowledgable they were of Rick and Morty.

Pickle Rick patching himself up with a pickle slice was pretty great though. Another side not, Summer's VA's delivery is consistently top notch.
