which of the british writers had the best output in comics?
>Alan Moore
>Grant Morrison
>Warren Ellis
>Peter Milligan
>Neil Gaiman
>Garth Ennis
>>
>>94469347
I hate to say it but Gaiman.
>>
>>94469347
Anal Gayman

OFFICIAL WRITERS YOU LISTED POWER RANKINGS

1 Gaiman
2 Moore
---POWERGAP---
3 Morrison
4 Ennis
5 Milligan
---POWERGAP---
6 Ellis
>>
the three best were Warren Ellis, Peter Milligan and Garth Ennis

Alan and Grant were too caught up in their dumb metafiction to tell a coherent story, Gaiman is just overrated
>>
>>94469347
Moore.
>>94469456
>>94469479
>>94469666
Gaiman is literally a glorified YA author.
>>
>>94469666
oh mr. satan, why is ellis bad?
>>
>>94469347
May they all burn in hell.

Except maybe Gaimen...he's OK.
>>
>>94469685

What too many words and strange ideas for you? fuck offffffff....
>>
>>94469748
>Gaiman is literally a glorified YA author.

Not a legit criticism, try again.

>>94469903
He's not bad.
>>
Hard to pick. But I think Moore and to a lesser extent Gaiman surpass the others in terms of their linguistic skills.

Ennis is like Tarantino, Morrison is like David Lynch, Ellis is Ridley Scott on some days and James Cameron on others. Moore is like, and I'm gonna get shit on for saying this, Orson Welles, it's not necessarily his plotting that makes him good, but his sheer intelligence and all the influences from classic literature, he treats the reader like they're just as intelligent.

Granted, not everything he writes is like that. And I know there are plenty of comics outside of the Big Two that are high art or at least influenced by high art, but I think Moore's best works, namely Swamp Thing, are pretty much the only cape comics that approach high art.

Again, I'm not saying high art is necessarily better than genre fiction.

>>94469748
I agree with that but I'm not sure what the hell happened to him, because Sandman and even Books of Magick are such incredibly dense works with amazing writing, and then everything after that is like Harry Potter-tier. Did his porn actress wife just fuck his brains to mush?
>>
>>94469347
Wagner/Grant

t. Young Adult
>>
>>94469958
>porn actress wife
Go on.
>>
>>94470103
Not really of the British invasion I think.
>>
ellis is my favorite.

Injection is a fun little horror/action/sci-fi comic working from expies of famous british characters that I feel like will end up getting the acclaim planetary got but its kind of not talked about right now for some reason
>>
Ennis is my favorite but I'd say Moore is probably the best.
>>
>>94470140
My mistake, she's a punk-rock musician/performance artist, she just gets naked a lot.
>>
>>94469347
Pat Mills
>>
>>94470140
>>94470549
They also have threesomes with an actual porn actress, Stoya. Although I'm pretty sure Neil watches most of the time.
>>
>>94470103
Grant didn't even write anything good.
>>
>>94470604
That's what I was thinking of, my mistake.

Gaiman and Palmer did the "open relationship" thing when they were both at the height of their fame and spent a lot of time apart on tour, so they just banged lots of people all the time all over the place.
>>
Grant Morrison and Garth Ennis aren't British.
>>
>>94470675
>northern Ireland
>Scotland
>not under British rule when both were born or currently
What did you mean by this?
>>
>>94469958
>everything after that
Did he even write comics after that? His dark horse work was definitely not YA.
Imo Swamp Thing is pretty much in line with the rest of the British invasion. Watchmen and From Hell are his only works that separate him from the rest.
>>
>>94469958
Anasi boys was good
>>
>>94470693

That's really not how that works. A person born in Zimbabwe in 1980 isn't British.
>>
Mark Millar
>>
>>94470967
mark "movie pitches in comic form" millar?
>>
>>94470967
I think it's telling that Millar is the only comic writer where adaptations of his work are almost always superior to the original comics.
>>
>>94470811
If you're born in the British dominion you're British, paddy.
>>
>>94471044
>almost always
That's not right. They're ALWAYS better. Even that abortion Wanted was still better than the edgy comic it came from, because at least it didn't have a villain that was actual sentient shit.
>>
>>94471135
>They're ALWAYS better.

>Wanted
Better
>Kick-Ass
Worse
>Kick-Ass 2
Better
>Kingsman
50/50
>>
>>94471180
>>Kick-Ass
>Worse
>>Kick-Ass 2
>Better

How can you compare two lumps of shit.
>>
>>94470109
Isn't most of 4chan composed of young adults?
>>
>>94471220
Kick-Ass was worse because, well, it made everything super generic and overly wacky.

The second comic took itself too seriously, while Kick-Ass 2 was more in line with the over the over the top exploitation-esque feel.
>>
>>94471014

He's certainly become that but on the other hand a Chrononauts movie would be fucking awesome.

a Nemesis movie would be fucking nuts as well but there isn't a snowballs chance in hell of that ever happening without significant neutering of basically everything that damn book is about.
>>
>>94471296
A Chrononauts movie would be pretty awesome, if only because the comic was so shit
>>
>>94471296
There are already plans on adapting Nemesis into a movie.
>>
>>94471180
I don't know. I hated the Kick-Ass comic, but thought the movie was great. Same with Kingsman.
>>
>>94471180

I agree with you on Kick-Ass but Kingsman was fucking great, can't wait for the new one to finally come out on dvd after it releases.
>>
>>94471366
I'm not saying that the Kingsman didn't have great aspects...but here's why I said 50/50

The Secret Service had more interesting character dynamics and implications, but boring action.
"Kingsman" had simplified and overused dynamics but great action.
>>
>>94471345

awwww nawwww... theres no way a studio is going to go as far as they need to with that whole shitshow of a comic, lame.
>>
>>94469347
> kill all of these faggots for making fun kid books edgy metafictive shit
>>
>>94471427
>complains about edge
>calls them faggots and threatens to kill them
>>
>>94470604
>with an actual porn actress, Stoya
she's trailer trash from Wilmington NC
think about this
she could not get an actual job acting in a city full of television and film production
>>
>>94471386

so... like a movie.

I know lots of people hate on namefags out of principle but despite your storytiming you sure as fuck have weird taste in things..
>>
>>94471180
Kickass the movie is a contender for best capeshit movie, while the comic was terrible.
>>
>>94471496

Im pretty sure they weren't talking about her acting talents you mong.
>>
>>94471500
Well, yeah 50/50 here meaning that it's a toss up.

Not saying Kingsman isn't a good movie, but it's hard to say it's better than the comic because each excel or are flawed in different ways.

>>94471504
>best capeshit movie
That's HULK
>>
>>94469347
I can't help but feel Moore has had the biggest impact on the industry on the whole.
At least Mark 'fuckhappiness' Millar isn't on the list.
Also Ennis > Ellis
>>
>>94471180
>Kingsman
>50/50

I've got the perfect example to show why the comic is shit and the movie improved on it to actually make it good: the movie actually made the glass-switching thing work. In the comic they're fucking standing up and the bad guy hands the kid the glass, so it makes absolutely no sense when he says he switched them. The comic is filled with halfassed shit like that, which was either rightfully ignored or improved upon in the movie to make it a more cohesive story.
>>
>>94472057
And you are fair in that assessment.

I personally just liked that Gary's character arc was more contained and touched upon than Eggsy's was. Not that Eggsy didn't have development either, but it took detours from it when it really didn't have to.

As well as Gary not having any formal training at all, while Eggsy is made from the start to be rather proficient in a related field. There's also the more somber ending that indicates a greater sense of coming of age and responsibility...

Stuff like that which I appreciated a lot more in the comic.
>>
>>94472057
just don't try to argue with him everyone knows dave's taste in comics is bottom of the barrel
>>
>>94472160
He has storytimed plenty of top tier stuff tho
>>
>>94472182
>>94472160
Oh, if I had to argue the actual quality of any of Millar's creator owned stuff - it'd be Starlight. Touching homage.

But his other stuff...they're just popcorn entertainment, so when it comes to comparing them to the movies...I try to line up as much as I can what each did.

Such as Wanted - the comic took a simple point and told it in a very long way. The movie made a different simple point and just told it more concisely. Etc.
>>
>>94469347
>best output
what a retarded question
they are all unique in their output. Just read their shit and enjoy
>>
>>94471227
No we're all little girls here.
>>
>>94472245
>Starlight. Touching homage.
This I can agree with you upon.

But then I also bet a Starlight movie with the proper nostalgic effects could be just as touching if not more.
>>
>>94471296
>a Nemesis movie would be fucking nuts
Only if they keep fetus bomb.
>>
>>94469666
Swap Morrison and Gaiman and you've got my list
>>
>>94472518
Depends on how it's done.
That's kinda my rub with Secret Service.
The comic had hints and implications of really nice character dynamics...so it was a shame that they were cast aside for the most part.

Starlight opens with great narration and wondering on love and loss. It needs to build upon that, and then we can agree.
>>
>>94470811
Zimbabwe isn't part of the British Isles, idiot. Scotland is located in Great Britain and Ireland is one of the British Isles, with Northern Ireland specifically being part of the UK.

Don't make the mistake of thinking only English = British.
>>
>>94469748
You really have never read any Gaiman book.
>>
>>94469347
Morrison. Dude has literally never had a bad run. From his indie stuff to capeshit and his output is probably double that of any other writer on your list. 52 confirms.
>>
>>94472594
Oh yeah, the movie would definitely have to focus on love, family, and having people believe in you for it to work, not just making a not-Flash Gordon action movie and calling it a day.
>>
>>94472651
You clearly have never read any of his /lit/ or recent work.
>>
>>94472721
I'm not up do date with his works, but I do believe his latest work was Norse Mythology, which was great.
