The creator of Boondocks wrote an excellent graphic novel/screenplay called Birth of a Nation. I'd probably make that, but with Static Shock as the main character. I guess.
>>
>>94455757

I had an idea where it was some white kid growing up the in hood and was pretty street smart and basically a reverse oreo. And then there was a black guy that was something like a Lex Luthor and looked down upon everyone.

Reverse racial roles and try not to be preachy about it.

Some of us didn't grow up in that culture. It's not a race thing, some of us just had parents who didn't want us glorifying that lifestyle or going to that part of town.

I got to give props to the show's creator.
When Pan asked twitter what was the worst thing in animation for 2016, he liked EVERY tweet that nominated the show.
>>
>>94455943
No, I just had grandparents that were fortunate enough to afford a house and let us stay there as they moved and a father that wanted us to be self sufficient before he left.

My point is that you shouldn't write about things you don't identify with because it doesn't do it justice and while it's no picnic, a lot of fucks that talk about leaving that life only talk about it physically rather than mentally so I'd say they do attach themselves to that lifestyle because it's one of the things they feel culturally attached to.

Make it a Mexican neighborhood and sort of like Ed Edd and Eddy.

It wouldn't be for children but gang culture isn't all there is in shitty neighborhoods. Its the most prominent and dangerous part but there's also just weird ass shit you go through that is uniquely poor neighborhoods.

Like shooting coyotes, the animal not the human criminal, with crossbows as they try to break into your yard, being the preteen getaway driver in a repo job, the weird fucking trips you take in small vehicles.
>>
>>94456130

My point was that you hear the hood and somehow think it's supposed to be glorifying it. Most of the time the hood is shown as a horrible place where people struggle to survive. That's the point of most stories. It's to show difficult situations that people have to live with and show that they can elevate themselves or make the most of it.

You see the hardships but also the human element. A good writer can show the good and the bad and create a compelling story in doing so.

Merely handwaving it because you don't understand comes across as sheltered and willing to remain ignorant.

Now if you yourself don't want to write it because you lack the understanding then that's perfectly fine.
>>

>>94456261
>Most of the time the hood is shown as a horrible place where people struggle to survive
Being in the hood is shit, but it sure as hell not inferno. All you need to do is steer the fuck away from gangs, cops and drugs and you'll be fine.

t. someone who lived more than half of his life in the shitty side of LA.
>>
>>94456502

We've seen fairly moderate depictions of the hood, usually in comedies. But in order to sell it in dramas it has to be a bit darker (no pun intended).
>>
>>94455820
Throw in a homeless guy who often goes on weird adventures that usually ending with him fighting everything from FIMA agents screwing up the water supply, to Vamps squatting in a penthouse suite. Everything would be perfect!
>>
>>94456737

I like the idea of a homeless supehrero that looks out for other homeless people. Maybe a hobo Batman.
>>
>>94456207
This but all the majority of the vatos locos that recur on the show are just low level tweakers that don't do shit unless it's something funny like going on a PCP hulk rage. Then when the actual gangsters show up there's a lot of tension

I'd probably try to make it about this teenager growing up in a hood household. I would make it to where he knows how shitty it is to be a hood rat and does his best to try to get out. He'd have his typical nigger friend that he knows is good and loyal deep down but also knows how bad of an influence he is. While other kids in his school are shitting the place up and being hoodlums he's trying his best to make a good impression and get into a half decent college.
There'd be bits of comedy sprinkled throughout but they wouldn't really impact the narrative.
And maybe a cute mulatto waiting for good measure and a typical negress to counter her
>>
>>94456261
That's actually the point of the "I didn't choose the thug life, the thug life chose me" thing that people make fun of. It's not supposed to be a glorification, they're literally saying they didn't have a choice and they wished the situation was different.
>>
>>94455765
this?

What is the majority of rap music?
>>
>>94457588
You must be thinking of Glam Rap, which glorifies the hood and gangster life style. Gangsta Rap, especially in the 80s-early 90s condemns hood life style.
>>
>>94455757
Make it a reverse Fresh Prince. A black (or hispanic, whatever) "Oreo" from the pampered white upper-class suburbs forced because Plot to stay down with their extended family in the inner city, learning to adjust to life and slowly (but surely) learning, while trying and comically failing to try and bring "culture" to the ghetto.
>>
>>94455776
The Boondocks takes place in an upscale suburb. Grandad spent his grandchildren's inheritance on a big fancy house in a predominantly white neighborhood. The only time it felt like a hood was when Ed Wuncler used Grandad's restaurant to raise crime and lower the property values so he can buy the Park across the street in the "Itis"
>>
Make a black version of Shameless
>>
>>94457930
The Fresh Prince already did an episode about that. Carlton ended up adjusted to a rough streets of Philly better than intended. Interestingly, he got rejected from by an All Black Sorority for not being black enough. Then there's Uncle Phil, who's ashamed of his rural upbringing.
>>
>>94456174
Single motherhood is the new norm of America. 4 out of 10 children are from single mother households.

The rest of the country is starting to catch up to blacks.
>>
>>94455757
it's a bout gangs, but they all have superpowers
Theres this gang, and the leader is the main character and has electricity powers, because he is black. then theres this other gang of asians that are like ninjas and shit and use katanas and magic. then there is this gang of russian mobsters that are commies. and the feds try to knock them down so they make genetically engineered supersoldiers.

i just want to make saints row meets crackdown cartoon, alright, it sounds pretty cool

>>94455757
koth, but in the hood.

follows a family with a grown up son as the main character instead of the father. The guy's family is dysfunctional, parents split up, his friends are idiots who keep dragging him into ridiculous situations.

Still though he stands by his morals, going out of his way to help his family and friends. Characters grow and develop as the show goes on, good mix of drama and comedy without getting too heavy and preachy.
>>
>>94455757
>How would you, in this day and age, make a cartoon set in "the hood"?

Troll Showtime at the Apollo for the BEST black comics to write. Have them redub or voiceover rotoscoped videos from World Star, or Hood Life, cause we got no budget in the 'Hood for storyboarders. Pay 'Graff artists to 'piece up the opening and ending seconds of each segment. Music is from whatever mixtape you can get the rights to paid in weed.

Vid related. It's Hood Life 3.

>What is the majority of rap music?

Obviously nothing you listen to or are even aware of. I bet you hear some JayZ or Kanye on the radio and suddenly think you have a firm grasp on the genre.

A lot of rap is actually really social, talking about politics, death, relationships, family, drugs messing people up, violence, etc.

You won't find many talking about their mansions and cars and record deals because most of them don't have that.
>>
>>94455757
White guy who has the plug on all drugs and always gets the guys into shit.
Hard black dude who don't take shit from noone.
Mexican dude whose parents are always gone, so most of the shit happens at his house. He has hot sisters the rest of the guys try to low key get at.
Lightskin guy who is always getting into girl problems and talks about it when drunk/high.
Asian kid who really tries to act black but really has strict parents and has really good grades. Redeeming factor is being funny/ having money and car.
Let the shenanigans ensue.

Shake was acting more like a deadbeat white parent. Black parents don't want their children to be basketball stars, it's always doctor or lawyer as the only avenue for success with black folks.

New Jersey has way too much park lands and greenery to be a hood. It seems that way because rent is cheaper there compared to NYC, which is flooding with hipsters.

I'd watch it. Nerdy black or latino kid growing up in the ghetto and having adventures with his friends. Nothing too political outside of a few guilty liberal white teachers who slowly become jaded and background references to corrupt politicians. The ghetto is rough but life does go on (unless you're in Detroit).
