Dave had finally recognised and began to move out of Bro's shadow. He realized that the person he was, was just a pale imitation of someone he really didn't want to be. He was trying to figure out who he was, and he still thought he wouldn't find an answer that he liked. It makes sense for him to be somewhat listless.

And while it was all building up to a payoff that never really arrived, him eventually refusing to kill himself at Terezi's bequest was a really well built up and important moment, it showed that he was able to break his patterns of behavior.

While the tonal consistency of his Act 3 arc will forever be something special, he was still one of the better parts of Act 5.

And with Jade, you need to remember that up to that point she really didn't have a whole hell of a lot going on. Act 5 was when we got to see her dealing with a situation she had no control over and the disillusionment of the no longer being within her element. We actually got to see Jade be a character for once.

I really liked this, but at the same time I was kind of disappointed. It feels like the author took every single step possible to make the setting as immutable and limited as possible, way beyond what logic would allow for. So you have a ton of incredibly unlikely twists without real explanation, and that's, uh, that's it. That's all of existence, forever. Instead of Rose's simply only having an authority problem, make it so that all her passive aggressive back and forth were just bizarre 13 year old girl with a screwed up head trying to flirt with her mother. Mom being none the wiser. And Rose could finally get an outlet for that attraction in the motherly Kanaya.
