What are /co/'s thoughts on the Grant Morrison/Richard Case run of Doom Patrol?
>>
Best Morrison book not titled All-Star Superman or Flex Mentallo
>>
>>94390783
Im always seeing the omni or trades in sheld threads so it has to be good
>>
I'm reading volume one of the new-printing paperbacks now. I've read most of Morrison's other DC work except this. My body still wasn't ready.

It's cool to see him working out concepts he'd use in later works here.
>>
I think it's shit because he made everyone forget about Rita.
>>
>>94391540
that's people being dumb not Grant's fault
>>
>>94391335
Flex Mentallo is literally the fusion of /fit/ and /x/.
>>
>>94391335
Hey fuck you, eat shit and kill yourself, you hopeless fuck. You'll die alone and unloved.

Sincerely, The Filth
>>
>>94391335
Superman Beyond 3D is better than both of those though
>>
Meandering, but the last couple pages of the last issue make it all worth it.
>>
Is there any previous doom patrol one needs to read to understand it or can you pick it up at this run?
>>
>>94390783
Easily my favorite comic run of all time.
>>
>>94394852
Silver Age stuff is a lot of fun but its not needed at all for Morrison's stuff. It's really self contained.
>>
Sometimes you can see the overall message of the entire run very clearly, when Mr Nobody appears, when the whole Pentagon thing is going on or in the final issue and sometimes you wonder if Grant was just venting fumes for that month and had no idea of what to do like with that issue about Rebis on the moon or the one with the Moustache Punisher (doesnt mean they're bad but if we are to understand the end as ambiguos all ocurrences have to be related to the theme of authority imposing itself on the abstract and fantastic, which some issues fail to convey).
>>
>>94390783
Best run of all time. It's amazing and talked to me on a level nothing else has. Come in out of the rain.
>>
It's only second to Sandman from those proto Vertigo titles.
>>
>>94390783
How many trade volumes are there of this run? I hate omnis. Too thick to enjoy.
>>
>>94397886
six. Or three(i think) of the new edition "book" ones.
>>
>>94397558
I think the beard hunter was just Grant having fun parodying, like that Doom Force special. But you're right that some arcs seem kind of useless in the end (Rebis on the moon felt like a bit of a cop out).
Still one of my favorite comics of all time though. The ending always makes me tear up a little.
>>
>>94397940
Correct on both counts.

> The ending
Help me out please. Between Robotman and Jane's endings I'm not sure I understand what happened. Jane's ending seems obvious enough but then what was Robotman's ending about if so?
>>
>>94390783
I'll always wonder what it'd be like if beast boy had been a team member on this run
>>
>>94401565
>>94401565
You mean his character arc? He stops trying to be the castrated tin can acting as a father to all the lost children and embraces his current state and live on with Jane and the other weirdos in Danny The World. The arc that every pleb hates with the geomancers and Rhea is vital to his character arc
>You're not her father, Cliff
>>
>>94397940
4 if you count Book 4 collecting Pollack's run that was recently solicited
>>
>>94401701
So basically stop whining and enjoy life as a freak Cliff?

>>94402536
How is Pollack?
>>
>>94402619
Awful SJW shit before there were SJWs
>>
>>94401701
Cliff understanding that Mr Nobody being president wasn't so bad after all was more important to his character arc. Up til that point he still operates on "good" being the same as normal.
>>
How can anyone hate the geomancers? They are so polite.
>>
>>94401701
>>94401565
can someone explained what happened with Danny the Street becoming Danny the world?
i didnt get it.
>>
>>94403338
The geomancers are the spiders part of the web, right? Their war with the other guys was just too conceptualized for my taste. What I mean is yeah, I get it Morrison, wars are pointless sometimes, but this war took it as its literal raison d'etre and that just sucked all interest out of me.
>>
>>94402979
Mister Nobody might be one of the only superheroic antagonists that is not about good vs evil but rather law vs chaos. Would be neat if there were more.
>>
>>94404770
>>94401565
Danny hearkened back to fantastic realms in the vein of Narnia, Never Never Land, Oz, etc. In the same way that Danny is a mobile, living street that can appear anywhere Danny the World is a whole alternate Earth of fantasy and whimsy draped over ours and is accessible in the right circumstances. Think of how characters get to Narnia, Never Never Land, or Oz - that's what happened to Jane. That's how she "disappeared." She's no longer on the same world. She's on Danny now with Cliff.

At least, that's my reading of it.
>>
>>94405738
The ending chokes me up everytime

Mr. Nobody did nothing wrong
>>
>>94405738
so Danny the world is a different entty than Danny the street?
>>
>>94407316
More like Danny transformed into a far greater being.

My only problem with it is it didn't really need to be a vessel for Morrison's ideas on metafiction. I love them, but he explored them much more thoroughly in his later works.

Of course, he didn't KNOW he was ever going to have another chance at it, so I can't blame him.
>>
>>94406671
Didn't he leave his entire team trapped in the painting and then caused the death of his second team at the hands of a deranged government agent?
>>
>>94409283
details details
>>
>>94407714
Which works?
>>
>>94390783
Finished it not so long ago. The final arcs feel kinda rushed, like they acepted the first idea that came to mind. Dorothy was wasted potential, she started really great, but the rest of the cast is wonderful.

As pretty much everyone who read it, loved the Brotherhood of Dada, but the Jack the Ripper arc had a huge impact in me, don't know why.
>>
>>94401701
>He stops trying to be the castrated tin can acting as a father to all the lost children and embraces his current state and live on with Jane and the other weirdos in Danny The World.
Care to explain a little more please.
>>
It was cool

It is kinda overrated

I ahte him and miss him so much.
I have always thought Nobody would be a good Superman villain.
>>
>>94413164
hate*
>>
How would you classify Morrison's Doom Patrol? Literary Nonsense?
>>
I love this run but I sort of wish he had also incorporated some of their older villains more. I'd kill for Morrison doing Animal Vegetable Mineral Man
>>
what music comes to mind when you read this?
>>
>>94414732
Absurdist Tragicomedy
>>
Whatever you do, don't read the Doom Patrol issues leading up to the start of Grant's run at #19. It's so transparently trying to be X-Men. There's some novelty in getting a little context to the characters Morrison didn't create like Rhea and Josh, but it's all really boring and uninteresting.
>>
>>94414977
I think its fun enough, especially seeing the old villains again but yeah its totally skippable.
>>
What's so bad about all the later Doom Patrol runs? I've read Pollacks and couldn't get past the art.
>>
>>94414732
Dadaism
>>
So is Rita currently dead or alive in the most recent Doom Patrol?
>>
>>94409649
Animal Man, Invisible, Flex Mentallo, and of course his big DC stuff like Final Crisis/Superman Beyond 3D.
>>
>>94418324
Animal Man was fun but I dunno it isn't my favorite. Flex Mentallo is god tier though. Still haven't read Invisible.

Best issue coming through
>>
>>94419387
So your ideal issue is about a gay french gorilla and a disembodied brain discussing why the fathers of modern philosophy are overrated? Or is it because of the robot body having an existential crisis?
>>
>>94414908
I was recently reading the final arc (the part with the candlemaker) with The Mars Volta's "Francis the Mute" in the background, it felt surprisingly fitting.

>>
>>94419387
Beard Hunter is the best.
>>
>>94419387
This story just came out of nowhere, absolutely unexpected. It was fucking hilarious and perfect.
>>
>>94390783
My all time favorite run on a comic. I started reading DP during the Cult of the Unwritten Book arc. Every month was a new issue surprise. It shaped my tastes in comics and life.
>>
>>94422313
haha yes
>>
>>94419387
But that's not the one in which Cliff dives into Crazy Jane's mind.
