I think it's got mad potential to triumph in the west if handled correctly. Even as a whitewashed hollywood movie franchise. The lore is amazing. Hell, most of the world already loves Saint Seiya despite of decades of poorly made continuations and adaptations, only because the original show was so good.

Tenkai Overture is my favorite Saint Seiya work, including the original series. I love what it does for Seiya and Saori as a couple and I think it explores what it means to be a saint more than any other SS work. I can see why it's not everyone's cup of tea but I fucking adore it.

Japanese animation has been boradcasted uncut and uncensored in most latin america since the 70's, in Mexico for example, Mazinger Z was super populer during the early 80's, so when Saint Seiya and Dragon Ball began broadcasting in the mid 90's both shows were HUGE succeses, i remember christmas of '97 people making this large lines on toy stores for buying the Bandai action figures for their kids.
Dragon Ball has been broadcasted almost non-stop since the 90's and Saint Seiya is being broadcasted AGAIN from ep 01 because of popular demand. Same as Malcolm in the Middle wich has been on the air since 2001 non-stop.

Omega season one is salvageable if you trim the fat (Pay no mind to school episodes past Ryuho's introduction, skip most of the silver and gold saint fights). The story was padded but actually concise and made sense, and there's some great animation in some episodes.

Omega season 2 yeah, it's shit. I wanted it to be good; it had one or two cool concepts, I and hyped briefly. But it's shit.

I'd say Saint Seiya is still very different from stuff children get these days, in spite SS created the battle shounen as we know it today. People die all the time, the heroes are basically traumatized child soldiers, the bad guys aren't that different in that regard; not includind the soundtrack and tone can get really depressing. Often animes have cute characters and jokes for lighting the mood but Saint Seiya is serious business almost all the time, with the heroes crying by physical and emotional pain.

It's amazing how all the movies follow the template of the Eris one to the letter, and in that template Shun was just a vehicle for Ikki to show up. They couldn't even give him an enemy to defeat himself first. And NO ONE in Japan seemed to give a shit; I mean he never wins ONCE in a movie. About a decade after it ended, the remaining and final arc of the comic was adapted to animation, but while it started with promise some of that 80s magic was not present in it. It declines in quality until it becomes an absurd slideshow of non-animation. I'd tell you to watch that only if you became a true fan after the first.

Everything else is just optional and, again, unless the first series touched your heart badly, I wouldn't recommend spending time on them.

Honestly, I hope the American writers play to their strengths and, even if it's a deviation from the comic's story, age the characters and give them more of a fleshed out life, like in the Sanctuary arc animation. Kurumada's writing consists of assigning an arquetype to a character and just sticking to it. The stoic one, the calm one, the hot-blooded one, etc.
In fact, when he needed to create Gold Saints in the past, he just pasted the present time one's personalities into them and changed their designs slightly (Past Shura has a katana instead of a knightsword, etc.)

The story remain rather classic so, far, but Next dimension is probably the recent Saint Seiya work with the most original kind of new attack and battles.
