Let's talk about how the movie would have been better.

To start with, I think the emoji world should be connected to ALL phones and computers, not just one kid's, that way it would be more impacting that the meh emoji makes a mistake.

Also instead of the meh, the movie should've focused on the happy emoji since it is more used, and sort of the main emoji that everyone recognizes.

Maybe they could have added some clever jokes about how the emojis look differently on different devices and operating systems.

Poop emoji should just be limited to one joke and one appearance.

Take away the idea of emoji's having families. In Wreck it Ralph and Inside out we didn't need mommy and daddy versions of the same characters, we know they are just programs/emotions.

Make the movie about a new executive at Sony Pictures. He's excited to show his coworkers all the ideas for movies they should make, only to learn that the rest of the executives are almost brain dead. They decide that the rookie's first project should be a movie about emoji.

The movie then shows the young executive's spiral into despair, illustrated by the fact that he starts to hallucinate the emojis in his coworkers' texts talking to him. By the end of the movie, he's practically gone insane.

Last shot is him entering the movie's world premiere, with a gun in his hand and tears in his eyes.

I just got back from it. I work at the movie theater So I got it for free, I wouldn't have paid for it otherwise.

-The one things that stood out about this movie was the romance between Jailbreak and Gene. It was actually well done and very cute. I always love seeing cartoon romance actually developed, and they did develop the romance well with them doing things like dancing and boating together. Jailbreak is definitely not a princess, (she technically is under that hat and wig) and Gene is definitely not prince charming.

- The movie kind of felt like a diet version of a mix between Zootopia and Wreck it Ralph.

-Smiley was a good villain. Sadistic with a smile always on.

-It had good music, the soundtrack was good.

-The adventuring was good, I liked the adventuring through the different apps.

Really, I think people are biased against the Emoji Movie simply for the fact that it’s about emojis and they think it’s ‘cringey’. People were hating on the movie since the idea was first announced and have since refused to give it a chance. But as for actual reasons people claim it’s a terrible movie, here is my response to them.

“It’s a cashgrab.”
Oh really? You could call just about anything a cashgrab. One of the most important purposes of a company is to make money. But you can’t say Emoji Movie was only made to make money; there is really a lot of love and thought put into it, especially with all the clever things going on in the background, and it looks like the creators had a lot of fun making the movie.

“Sony cancelled the Popeye Movie for this.”
This is not true at all. What happened is that director Genndy Tartakovsky stopped working on the project in favor of finishing Hotel Transylvania 2, and working on his own movie called “Can You Imagine”. This led everybody to believe the movie was cancelled for good, but the production was just halted for a long time. Sony still has plans to make a Popeye movie, and they announced the writer on January 2016. So to sum it up: Sony did NOT cancel Popeye movie, and its delay has NOTHING to do with the Emoji Movie.

“The character designs are bad.”
The promotional images do need improving, the colors are often oversaturated and the characters might look off-putting in them. But if you look at actual movie footage itself, you’ll notice that the characters look much better in the movie than they do in the marketing! Also, I see some people saying Smiler looks creepy, but she’s not that bad, and she’s SUPPOSED to look unsettling! She’s evil!

“POOP! :(”
The Emoji Movie has Poop! Potty humor! Who cares? Just about every animated movie has potty humor, and the poop jokes in the Emoji Movie trailers are actually really funny ones in my opinion. Captain Underpants had an abundance of potty humor and nobody complains about it.
“The humor is bad.”
Is it? I don’t see how it’s any worse than humor in other animated comedy movies. Personally, all the trailers make me laugh a lot. Lighten up! If any of the jokes were in a Disney movie people probably wouldn’t complain, but people are desperate for reasons to justify their unfairness towards the Emoji Movie.
“It rips off Lego Movie/Wreck-it Ralpth/etc”
Nothing is completely original, from what I see in the trailers it seems to have some pretty cool ideas. This movie is meant to be entertaining, silly fun, it doesn’t have to be unique and complex. Plenty of movies seem similar to each other, you don’t have to give all the bad rap to Emoji Movie.
That’s all I’ve got for now. I know my input might not be the best since I haven’t seen the movie yet, but these are just my opinions based on the trailers and everyone clung to hating the movie before it was even released so.

I think the reason why this movie got more flak than your typical kids film is because the concept will be horribly dated pretty soon. Emojis aren't a thing that's unique to a person, and they don't have personalities at all. They're just faces. Inside Out worked because the characters interacted in a way unique to the character vessel they occupied. Wreck it Ralph worked because the characters were allowed to be complex. But with these characters, they are confined to one emotion and they aren't unique, they're the same in every phone. You aren't able to get attached to any of them because they aren't unique in any way.

I peeped the junior novelization while I was at the local Walm-Art the other day.

Turns out I was wrong about the book being based on an earlier draft of the script. It still had the whole "I'm not waiting for a prince" bullshit between Gene and Jailbreak. Plus, the Fist Bump guy I was thinking about was actually dating some kind of Peace Sign emoji who High-Five had a thing for, because in movies like this you need to have everybody hook up at the end or else nobody will be happy.

Actually, it might be based on an earlier draft, since it features Smiler giving Gene a new cubicle; spoilers told me that she's in the Loser Lounge at the end of the film.

Oh, and Jailbreak kisses Gene at the end. Does that happen in the movie?
