I still have hopes that the whole point of the divorce arc is to build Rick up so he can get fucked in the ass with no lube and take the mother of all falls to punish him for his hubris.

IE he gets everything he wants (no Council of Ricks, No Federation, Beth divorcing Jerry, Morty at his mercy, and Summer as a hyper-competent sidekick) only to for it to backfire on him big time.

We already have the plot Phoenix Person and his wife are apparently rebuilding the Federation or at least, martially what's left to get revenge on Rick. Summer's a loose cannon and more to the point Rick's going to probably pay dearly when Summer realizes the truth about her grandfather in terms of how Summer responds, and the Council of Ricks is probably regrouping even as we speak.

Which leads us to Jerry; ten will get you twenty, that when Beth starts dating again, whoever she gets is going to make Rick's life a living hell. He won't be cowed and most likely be an Alpha male type who will immediately threaten Rick's supremacy over his captive family. And Rick's attempts to kill or vanish him will probably backfire big time and be the thing that causes Summer and Beth to turn against him again.

At which point, Rick will have to crawl on all fours to Jerry and suck Jerry's dick to get him to come back home, so the two can break Beth and her Chad Thundercock up and reunite Jerry and Beth so Rick doesn't end up exiled to a crooked nursing home where they drug everyone into a stupor as his punishment for being a shitty human being.

The new sympathetic direction they're taking him in is most likely due to the change in writing staff (and the sympathetic direction is definately intentional). Looking at the adverts, he's getting some part in a rick-adventure despite the fact they have almost zero business interacting at all anymore. So he's probably going to get some character development at some point and quite possibly turn into a foil of some kind for Rick.

There exist well written asshole characters, like Ash from Evil Dead. The key is to give them a good reason and play the rest of the universe off it. Comparing the two, Ash is an example because gods forced him to become a killer and made him kill his best friends and little sister, only to be shunned by society and deemed a psycho when in reality he saved the world. We see Ash's decent into his current position in life. With Rick the only explanation we get is that something happened a while ago and he's a nihilist, that's it. Its lazy writing. Well, aside from a part time minimum wage job not being worth jack shit outside of weed money for teenagers, thats hardly typical. And often, they don't like hiring middle aged people if they can avoid it. Young people will deal with the job because they only need pocket money, and old people are fine because they basically just want to work and don't care what kind of work it is. But people that are in the regular adult range are usually not worth hiring on for the entry level stuff, which is 99% of it and the only thing they hire for that doesn't require experience or a military background.

For me it's that Morty blames his dad for the divorce and none of it on Beth. It's a two way street and every else in the family is ignoring Beth's obsession with Rick. Morty still has the same option from the beginning of the episode to the end that it's Jerry's fault instead of both of them.

The only prior issue with RandM in the past was the humor anyway being touch and go. Now it's a more flanderized female take on what it was and shitting on jerry more.

It's the culmination of all of the episodes where you're shown that it would honestly be better if they divorced. Like, I DISTINCTLY remember people on this board wanting Jerry gone because every Beth and Jerry B Plot was basically them semi-reconciling was more and more prove that they had a shit relationship.

Jerry's basically the equivalent of the character in a show who knows what's REALLY going on (the nosy neighbors, the guy who knows magic is real, ect.) that gets shit on to protect the main character, but turned up to the extreme. Judging by the last episode Beth life isn't going to be better without Jerry.

She wanted to hang out with her family by the end of the episode and they told her no. Rick, Morty and Summer are a team and she's excluded from it and with Jerry not there to take her abuse or keep her company she's just going to fucking fall into depression (like that universe were she never married Jerry and is with all those birds).

Which is also good for the character since it's going to force her to develop.
